Arsenal join race to sign £30m Brazil striker with initial talks held

Arsenal have now joined the race to sign a Brazil striker, who could be available for quite a realistic transfer fee in this inflated market, as manager Mikel Arteta and interim sporting director Jason Ayto continue their pursuit of a capable number nine.

Arsenal scouring January market for new striker

Last week, Arteta confirmed to the media that Arsenal are indeed actively looking for a striker, following Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending ACL injury.

Jesus is expected to be out for as long as nine months after he ruptured his ACL in their FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, while Arteta is also minus Bukayo Saka’s crucial goals and assists until March.

These blows have left Arteta with gaping holes up front that need to be shored up, prompting reports that Arsenal have shortlisted many high-profile strikers for potential transfers before deadline day on February 3.

Arsenal are reportedly very keen on Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic, with some reports suggesting that they’ve already had a loan bid rejected. Meanwhile, it is believed by other media sources that RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is a top target for Arteta and Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres remains on Arsenal’s radar.

That being said, all three of the aforementioned centre-forwards would likely come at a premium, as Leipzig, Sporting and Juve certainly won’t be keen on losing their chief goalscorers midway through 2024/2025.

There are cheaper alternatives, though, like Marseille’s Elye Wahi – who could leave the Ligue 1 side for as little as £25 million.

Wahi hasn’t exactly been a dream signing for Roberto De Zerbi across the channel, but he did score 19 goals in 33 French top-flight matches for Montpellier during his best season in 2022/2023.

Alongside the Frenchman, another striker who could leave for a fairly decent transfer fee is Botafogo’s Igor Jesus.

Arsenal join race to sign Igor Jesus with informal talks held

As per Diario AS reporter Eduardo Burgos, Arsenal have held “informal” talks over signing Jesus from Botafogo after joining the race for his signature.

The 23-year-old earned his first caps for Brazil at the back end of last year, joining Botafogo last year off the back of some prolific seasons in the UAE League with Shabab Al-Ahli.

Jesus bagged 34 goals and 16 assists over 66 appearances for the Arab outfit, since going on to become one of Botafogo’s star attackers. The South American averages more shots at goal per 90 than any other player in their squad (WhoScored), registering five goals and three assists in the Brazilian top flight so far this term.

As well as this, it is believed his price tag stands at around £30 million.

Eagles downed as Rilee Rossouw keeps Somerset flying high

Tom Abell plays support role in century stand to ease visitors home

Rilee Rossouw took full toll on the Essex attack after being dropped•Getty Images

Somerset 194 for 2 (Rossouw 85*, Abell 62*) beat Essex 188 for 5 (Pepper 86*, Walter 58) by eight wickets Rilee Rossouw surged to the top of the Vitality Blast run-scoring charts as Somerset stayed on course for a home knockout tie, thrashing Essex by eight wickets at Chelmsford.Rossouw plundered 85 not out with seven sixes and five fours to move ahead of Northamptonshire’s Chris Lynn in the standings as the visitors made light work of chasing down 189 to win, though Eagles were left to rue giving him a life, spilling a regulation chance when the match-winner had made just 4. Tom Abell provided great support, reaching his own half century in 39 balls. All this came after Michael Pepper, with 86 not out, and Paul Walter were the mainstays of the hosts’ 188-l for 5. Jack Brooks was the pick of the Somerset attack with 2 for 23.On the same pitch which yielded 477 runs in Friday’s encounter with Sussex, Essex initially struggled for fluency after being put in. Adam Rossington gloved one from Peter Siddle through to Tom Banton and Feroze Khushi flowered briefly before lofting Ben Green to midwicket.Pepper spiced things up, sweeping Roelof van der Merwe over backward square for six, but when the in-form Matt Critchley missed out Eagles were 78 for 3.It was Walter who changed the complexion of the innings, clearing his front leg and striking the ball cleanly to all parts, one of his five sixes threatening the residents of flats on the old hospital site. The allrounder raced to 50 in 26 balls and the stand reached 87 from 47 before he holed out in the deep, one of two wickets in as many balls for Brooks.Pepper though, whose 50 came in 31 balls, dinked Siddle for six over third man as 20 came from the final over.Even so, 188 looked light, all the more so when Will Smeed plundered three sixes from the opening over, but having raced to 22 he edged Daniel Sams through to Rossington.Banton briefly picked up the baton, only for Pepper to send him on his way courtesy of a stunning catch, running in from the fence and diving full length to cling on inches above the turf.If that was stunning, Sams dropped a sitter by comparison to reprieve Rossouw later in the same Ben Allison over. The groans from a big crowd suggested it was a pivotal moment and Rossouw reinforced the view by lofting the luckless Allison for successive sixes in his next over, before plundering another maximum off spinner Simon Harmer. Two more mighty blows off Aron Nijjar took him to 50 off 19 balls with five sixes and three fours, and with Abell providing wristy elegance from the other end the 100-stand took just 52 balls as the Cidermen coasted home.

Man Utd preparing offer for "incredible" new £67m Andre Onana replacement

Manchester United are preparing an offer to sign an “incredible” £67 million ace to replace goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to a recent report. Ruben Amorim’s arrival means no player is guaranteed a future at United, but it would certainly be a surprise to see the Cameroon star replaced given his performances this season.

INEOS are looking to secure another young, exciting talent for Manchester United.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 10, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

January could be a good time for United to move one or two players on, which will help them bring in new faces while balancing the books. It is clear that work is being done behind the scenes, as the Premier League side continues to be linked with players as the January transfer window gets ever closer.

The Red Devils have been linked with two high-profile players in the last 24 hours, the first being midfielder Frenkie de Jong. De Jong has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a while now, so some fans may take this news with a pinch of salt. However, it is reported that the relationship between Barça and De Jong has turned into bitterness, and the midfielder is not keen on extending his stay, which has opened the door for United to make a move.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong

As well as de Jong, United are also chasing a deal for Victor Osimhen but face strong competition from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. Napoli are looking to sell the striker in January despite him being on loan at Galatasaray, and given United’s lack of goals at the top end of the pitch, they have made signing the Nigerian international a January priority.

Man Utd preparing offer to replace Andre Onana

According to a report from Spain, Manchester United are preparing a move to sign goalkeeper Mike Maignan from AC Milan. The French international has been on the books of the Italian side since 2021, and in that time, he has established himself as one of the best-performing goalkeepers in Europe and on the international stage.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

Maignan, who has been dubbed “incredible” by Didier Deschamps, has been Milan’s number one between the sticks in his time at San Siro. Last season, he played 29 games in Serie A, conceding 34 goals and keeping 11 clean sheets; he also kept four clean sheets in the Champions League and Europa League.

This report from Spain states that the future of Andre Onana at United is up in the air, and rumours about him possibly leaving Old Trafford in the summer have led the club to look at possible replacements. This is despite Onana currently ranking top five in the Premier League for both clean sheets and post-shot expected goals (how likely a shot is to go in) prevented.

Milan are keen to keep hold of Maignan, who is under contract until 2026, but if they were to receive a significant offer, they could be tempted to sell. United are said to be already preparing a strategy to convince both the player and the club to agree to a transfer. It would cost the Red Devils around £67 million to sign the 29-year-old.

Stafanie Taylor promises greater things in future as West Indies sign off from World Cup

“You’ll be seeing us around,” Stafanie Taylor, the West Indies captain, said after an emphatic 157-run defeat at the hands of title favourites Australia knocked her side out of a World Cup tournament regarded as a resounding success for her team. Two batters down chasing a mammoth 306 from 45 overs after Anisa Mohammad injured her hamstring while fielding and Chinelle Henry took ill during the match, West Indies had been comprehensively out-played long before that.Australian centurion Alyssa Healy and Rachael Haynes put on 216 runs for the first wicket and a steady stream of wickets knocked West Indies’ pursuit on the head shortly after it got going via Deandra Dottin and then Hayley Matthews, with Taylor only able to hold the innings together for so long, by which point the run rate required had blown out.But Taylor said reaching the semi-finals showed the progress her side had made since reaching the tournament based on world rankings when the qualifiers were cancelled amid the Covid-19 pandemic, then losing their four-match ODI series against South Africa in the lead-up 2-1.West Indies set the World Cup alight by defeating New Zealand and England in their first two matches but fell away after that, winning just one more game – against Bangladesh – before a washout against South Africa left them relying on South Africa’s narrow defeat of India to scrape into the final four.”We beat two of the top teams and I reckon no one expected that,” Taylor said. “And to be in the semi-finals, no one expected that. The way we played throughout the tournament has been really good.”We had some downs and that happens. It’s about learning and I believe that we are still learning. I’m very proud of the way we played. We still have more to go, so yeah, you’ll see us around.”Matthews was West Indies’ leading run-scorer with 260 at 37.14 and a strike rate of 80.00 as well as their leading wicket-taker with eight at an average of 26.80. She echoed her captain’s belief that the tournament was a success and hoped it would provide a solid platform for future growth.”Beating a team like New Zealand and then being able to beat a team like England right after, these are things that we couldn’t imagine doing a year ago,” Matthews said. “It’s just really, really good to be a part of the growth that this team has had over the last year and I genuinely do think that if we continue moving in this direction, there’s only bigger things for us.”When you speak about the advantages some of the other teams would have over us, like Australia or England, with their domestic structure and the amount of talent that they have to pull from within their pools, and then you look at us competing against teams like that, it just shows the fight and the heart that we really do have as a team.”When you look at the characteristics of this team, you think of people who play with their hearts on their sleeves. We come into every game with so much emotion and so much passion, trying to represent the West Indies and the Caribbean and we plan to continuously do that, all the time, try to play with us as much fight as we possibly can.”We are by no means the absolutely best cricketers in the world compared to some of the others but at the same time we play with so much fight and so much spirit that we can compete with the best in the world, which is brilliant to be a part of.”And Matthews believed that West Indies were on the right path towards developing more local talent via domestic competition such as the recently announced three-team Women’s CPL starting later this year.”The more cricket we can play at a lower level to the domestic stuff, the better,” she said. “Hopefully we can get some more young girls coming through the system.”In this batch of players, this may be a lot of their last World Cups… it would be really good if we could start to nurture some younger players throughout the domestic cricket season and get some more people filtering into West Indies stuff.”

Overlooked by O’Neil: The next Wolves boss must unleash Pedro Neto 2.0

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans will be pleased with how well the likes of Jorgen Strand Larsen and Matheus Cunha have performed this season in attack, even as their side currently sit in the dreaded relegation spaces in the Premier League.

Between them, the on-fire duo up top have scored 13 of Wolves’ 22 top-flight strikes to date, but the defenders at Molineux are very much letting them down having leaked an embarrassing 36 goals.

Regardless, the under-pressure Gary O’Neil will be overjoyed with how well both the Brazilian and the Nordic attacker are doing, with the pair managing to somewhat fill the void left behind by Pedro Neto.

Neto's time at Wolves

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that Wolves losing Neto this summer was going to hurt them, with the Portuguese winger a spellbinding watch when at the peak of his powers in the West Midlands.

Unfortunately, injury issues meant the now Chelsea number seven was out of the team for large patches, but he still managed to catch the eye of the Blues when fit with 14 goals and 24 assists picked up donning an Old Gold strip.

Marauding forward with so much pace to burn when at full flow, as seen in this stunning solo strike against Manchester City last year, Wolves would have at least taken some solace from the fact they managed to gain a significant £54m fee for his services when Chelsea did come knocking.

The Premier League strugglers must have thought they’d have found an adequate replacement for Neto this summer in this exciting loan purchase, but unlike both Larsen and Cunha who have starred for the relegation-threatened side despite their team’s lowly predicament, this flashy buy has done very little to date.

Carlos Forbs' time at Wolves

Wolves would leave it to the death to pick up promising Ajax star Carlos Forbs in the last transfer window, with the move finally going through on deadline day.

The loan deal will eventually go through as a permanent switch, as long as certain clauses are triggered, with the Old Gold smug at the fact they’d managed to win another slick and quick Portuguese winger who operates in the same mould as their former maverick.

This breakaway strike Forbs managed for the Amsterdam giants in the Europa League last season versus Olympique Marseille shows off his blistering speed when through on goal, with the ex-Manchester City wonderkid desperate to succeed at Molineux after never making the cut at a senior level for the reigning top-flight champions.

It’s not as if the 20-year-old struggled in the youth set-up at Man City either, with a crazy 24 goals and 23 assists tallied up for the U18s from just 34 games, leading to football analyst Ben Mattinson stating that the “frightening” youngster possessed “world class potential.”

But, for all of the immense hype that has come his way, Forbs has struggled to leap into O’Neil’s first team to try and become the club’s new version of Neto, with a mere 35 minutes handed out to him on average this season in the Premier League from six games.

He was left rooted to the substitutes bench last time out versus Everton too, having underwhelmed versus AFC Bournemouth the match before with zero successful dribbles registered from two attempted, but a new potential manager in the Old Gold dug out perhaps could be willing to give him more of a chance to shine.

It’s fair to say the daring attacker expected the infancy of his playing days at Wolves to be going far more swimmingly than they are now, as Old Gold supporters begin to worry that their exciting recruit will just go down as a flop.

Having been somewhat overlooked by O’Neil thus far, amid his solitary start, a new appointment could be just what is needed for the next Neto to shine.

He’s a man in demand.

Ipswich loan star has seen his value soar 598% since leaving

It’s been a mixed start to Premier League life for Ipswich Town this season.

Kieran McKenna’s side have only lost five of their opening ten games, which is quite impressive for a newly promoted side, but they have also failed to win a single one.

The Tractor Boys’ most significant weakness at present is undoubtedly their defence, as evidenced by the fact that they have conceded the second most goals so far, but they’ve also been sloppy in attack at times.

It’s too early to say with any certainty whether Ipswich will beat the drop this season, but if they continue to let in goals at the rate they are and miss the chances they are, their chances don’t look great, and it’s times like this that it would be great to have a former loan player whose valuation has since exploded back at the club.

Ipswich's attacking form this season

So, if we’re going to examine Ipswich’s attacking form in the league this season, the logical place to start is with how many goals they’ve scored in their ten games and where they rank compared to the rest of the league.

The good news in this regard is that McKenna’s side are not the worst, but their tally of just ten goals is better than only Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United, who have all been struggling massively this year.

Moreover, the underlying numbers don’t paint a particularly rosy picture either.

According to Understat, the Suffolk side have only created an expected goals figure of 11.09 in the league, so not only are the chances few and far between, but when they do come, the team are still slightly underperforming when it comes to their finishing.

The saving grace at present is Liam Delap, who has scored his five goals from an expected goals figure of just 2.81, and while that level of overperformance is unstainable for the long-term, it’s a sign that he has the ability to singlehandedly get the Blues out of trouble in certain games.

However, as impressive as the 21-year-old’s goalscoring exploits have been this season, a former Ipswich loanee is outscoring him at the moment, whose valuation has skyrocketed since his short stint at Portman Road.

Ipswich's former loan star now worth millions

So, the former Ipswich loanee in question is current Nottingham Forest talisman Chris Wood, who has been enjoying a spectacular campaign this year.

The “outstanding” New Zealander, as dubbed by pundit Stephen Warnock, joined the Tractor Boys on a six-month loan deal from Leicester City in February 2015.

However, just over a month later, following 8 goalless appearances, he returned to the King Power before being sold to Leeds United that summer.

The next nine years would see the Auckland-born poacher move from the Whites to Burnley to Newcastle United and then to Forest on a short-term loan with an obligation to buy in January 2023.

Since moving to the City Ground, the 74-capped international has taken a step-up, and this season, in particular, he has been unreal, scoring eight goals in just ten appearances and from an expected goals figure of 5.41, highlighting just how clinical he has become.

Unsurprisingly, his impressive career and recent form have seen his valuation balloon, and according to Transfermarkt, it now sits at around €7m, which is £5.3m or 598% more than the €1m – £800k – it was during his time at Portman Road.

Ultimately, while his stint in an Ipswich shirt was less than successful, we’re sure that McKenna would love to have Wood by his side now to compliment and help Delap continue to develop into a top-class forward himself.

Bukayo Saka’s injury on international duty with England, where he was forced off the field during their 2-1 Nations League defeat to Greece, has reportedly set off alarm bells within the Emirates Stadium and brought attention to their need for an alternative option.

Saka is expected to miss Arsenal’s clash against Liverpool as well and hasn’t taken to the field at all since England’s loss at Wembley. Some media outlets claim Arsenal’s plans to sign a left-winger have been accelerated by Saka’s injury, and there are a few targets who’ve already been named.

Arsenal are exploring a quick January deal for Bryan Mbeumo, following his exceptional start to the season at Brentford. Meanwhile, other rumours suggest that Arteta is a real admirer of Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo and the Gunners could make a move for him in 2025.

Interestingly, Semenyo has already admitted that he’s a fan of the club, and wants to play for a top team at some point in the future.

“I am an Arsenal fan,” said Semenyo to The Athletic.

“I don’t conflict the two with my job. It is great to play against Arsenal, a team I have watched all my life and I want to play for the top clubs as well. In order for that to happen I need to prove it.

“Yeah, any team that plays Champions League, Europa (League) — that’s the aim. I know that’s not going to come with a click of my fingers, it’s going to take some time. It’s going to take goals. It’s going to take a lot of consistent performances. But I’ve worked all my life for that and I’m just going to continue working hard. That’s my mentality.”

Alongside the likes of Semenyo and Mbeumo, Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, who can play both out wide and up front, is believed to be on Arsenal’s radar.

The Spaniard, who Arteta knows well from their time together at Man City, has played eight La Liga matches this season – bagging a goal and two assists – but the incredible form of Raphinha means Barca could consider selling to raise funds.

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

Arsenal are keeping tabs on Torres amid this situation at the Camp Nou, alongside Aston Villa and Newcastle United, and it is believed Arteta is a “huge fan” of the £161,000-per-week player.

That is according to The Boot Room, who also claim that Torres isn’t exactly clamoring to leave and is happy to remain a squad player under new manager Hansi Flick.
