Ajmal proves his Test credentials

Saeed Ajmal showed great control and guile to pick up his first five-wicket haul in just his sixth Test

Nagraj Gollapudi at Edgbaston07-Aug-2010″ (let it go, let it go),” Saeed Ajmal shouted to the fielder at short gully as Paul Collingwood confidently pushed one to the off side. Ajmal knew Collingwood was a good reader of spin bowling having stood strong against the might of Muralitharan in the past. But it was part of Ajmal’s plan.He wanted to bowl at the fresh-to-the-crease Matt Prior and was confident of working out the England wicket-keeper. Bowling from round the stumps Ajmal made use of a touch of extra bounce, varying the pace of his deliveries cleverly and mixing things up with liberal use of his to keep Prior on his toes. With the wicketkeeper batsman rooted to the crease as a matter of precaution, but taking his chances against flighted deliveries every so often, Ajmal sensed the chance for a wicket. When Prior swept at the final delivery – an offbreak – of Ajmal’s 22nd over he read the flight correctly but was beaten by the slow pace and adjudged plumb by the on-field umpire, a decision vindicated by the UDRS. Like an excited pony Ajmal went hopping across the turf celebrating his spoils. Immediately into the final session Ajmal then overwhelmed a charging Kevin Pietersen with his .More joy was on the way. Across his next eight balls he would go on to pick up three wickets, and could have had more were it not for two dropped catches. One of the prized scalps was Collingwood, who was also defeated by Ajmal’s stock weapon – the . Ajmal’s first ball as soon as Collingwood had walked in earlier in the afternoon was the other ‘un. England’s most dependable batsman survived that, playing off the pitch. But the Pakistani did not waste the delivery. He used it sparingly and retained the mystery. In doing that he gained the upper hand against the batsman.Coming into this match the pressure was on Ajmal to prove his worth. The task wasn’t easy as he had seen Danish Kaneria being dropped and asked to regain his confidence on the county circuit after his below-par performances in the Australia series last month and then at Trent Bridge last week. Ajmal had also suffered heavily on seaming tracks in Australia and the cold conditions in New Zealand in his last two Tests.Though people like Imran Khan preferred him over Kaneria because they felt he could work out the left-handers better, the team think-tank persisted with the legspinner until they ran out of patience in Notttingham, where Kaneria failed to make even a tiny impression and struggled like a rookie. But today Ajmal brought to the field what was expected of his senior partner. Luckily providence smiled on him as the sun shone brightly immediately after tea. In the first half of the day he had asked some questions of Pietersen and Jonathan Trott but the drizzle that interrupted play for most of the first two sessions did not allow him to grip the ball properly. In brighter and drier conditions Ajmal came into his element. He operated with a slip and a short leg throughout his unbroken spell (19.1-5-50-5) from the City End, bowling almost entirely from around the stumps.”With HawkEye coming in, left-arm spinners slide the ball on for lbws. Offspinners get a lot of lbws from round the wicket, so you [batsman] have to work really hard, and a bloke who’s got a you have to work extra special hard. He bowled nicely,” Pietersen said in praise of Ajmal. It was not just the angle. On a dry surface, which also had good bounce, Ajmal calibrated his pace constantly. With control, the most vital factor on a two-paced Edgbaston pitch, he became even more dangerous.Interestingly Ajmal is a constant fixture in Pakistan’s Twenty20 squad and was instrumental in the team winning the World Cup in that format in England last year where he was the tournament’s second-highest wicket taker. Inadvertently spinners like Harbhajan Singh have taken that defensive mindset into the longer format, flighting and spinning the ball less. But Ajmal has gone the other way. He flighted the ball without fear, daring the batsmen to take him on. But they were never comfortable because of the fear that Ajmal might snake in the or the faster delivery and surprise them.”It was a good wicket for him to bowl on and he bowled at a good pace. I just tried to knock that down to mid-on for one run but obviously it spun the other way,” Pietersen modestly confessed about his inability to read Ajmal’s hand. For Salman Butt, who was out for a duck late in the afternoon with his team on the verge of a defeat, the next few days loomed dark and ominous. So he was happy that Ajmal lightened his stress. “He has always been impressive whenever he has played for Pakistan. He showed it today that he can also do well in Test cricket. Even with the two set batsmen he kept constantly troubling them. They way he bowled and took wickets was very inspiring for the whole team,” Butt said. What has helped Ajmal maintain an equanimity despite the dropped catches – Pietersen was missed in his first over by Umar Gul at mid-on and two chances went begging on Saturday – is that he takes his game seriously but is a light-hearted man. In the dressing room he is a jovial character and not the 30-year-old boring adult. After spending the day twirling the ball mesmerizingly on the field, he could be seen strolling around the ground with his wife and child after stumps. With his mind settled the field, he is able to focus it without distraction.

Alam stars in fatigue-heavy season

Faras Ghani reviews the 2006-07 Pakistan domestic season

As the curtains drew on Pakistan’s domestic season with the Pentangular Cup, astoundingly nearly eleven months after a not-so-grand opening in June 2006, huge sighs of relief were clearly audible even from the domestic-double winners Habib Bank Limited (HBL). Given the number of stars that don their jerseys, HBL’s presence on the podium was not surprising. Thus the mismatches of the Pentangular Cup finally bid adieu to the aching bodies of players, of whom a substantial number will head for the lucrative, and cooler, shores of club cricket in the UK.The season said hello to new rising stars, in particular Under-19 alumni including Fawad Alam, Anwar Ali and Sarfraz Ahmed, reacquainted us with one old horse, Ijaz Ahmed, after a six-year absence and had the now-customary Shoaib Akhtar controversy: fined for not wearing the requisite sponsor logo.On the field, Karachi Urban lifted the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, Pakistan’s elite first-class tournament, the first triumph from the once-dominant coastal city in the last five years. Once upon a time Karachi teams almost owned the trophy, having won it no less than six times in the 90s.The 18th such triumph of a Karachi side was constructed largely on the back of that staunchest of Karachiites, Hasan Raza, who in his 10th first-class season at the age of 25 led the side with over 500 runs in seven matches. His season-best 161 in the final against defending champions Sialkot, taking Karachi from 261 for 8 to 403, sealed the deal. Off-spinner Tahir Khan and seamer Rajesh Ramesh took 59 wickets between them to provide valuable support. And Karachi’s revival almost stretched to the shorter format as well, a Shahid Afridi-led Karachi Dolphins blasting their way to the Twenty20 final only to lose to reigning champions Sialkot. Given that they were up against a side including internationals Imran Nazir, Shoaib Malik, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Abdur Rehman and Mohammad Asif, it wasn’t so surprising. As consolation for the Dolphins, the 21-year old flair of Alam did announce itself to the world, even temporarily tormenting bigger names in the final with a five-wicket haul and a fifty.Departments then entered the stage to flex their muscles and they don’t come much bigger than HBL, already the winners of eight Patrons Trophy titles. With an array of international executors at their disposal, they duly lifted the Patron’s Trophy without breaking a sweat. Literally. An unbeaten streak of seven games, courtesy heroics from Shahid Afridi, Taufeeq Umar and Azhar Mahmood in particular, placed them air miles ahead of the rest of the pack. The ABN AMRO Cup was grabbed, without a second thought, by the Peshawar Panthers who thrashed a severely depleted Sialkot Stallions. But the biggest impression was created outside, with Alam again shining, finishing as the second highest scorer and third highest wicket-taker in the tournament. His time came soon after though, as he thrust his departmental employers, National Bank to their maiden Patron’s Cup ODI triumph against HBL.And onto the last, and surely the least of the lot, the Pentangular Cup, aimlessly combining the best departments and the best provinces (Sind, Punjab and a combined NWFP-Baluchistan squad). The timing, the need, the organising, and even the attitude of players all were questioned in searing temperatures amid zero interest from the public. HBL demolished one and all with one great final effort, Imran Farhat, Raza again and left-arm spinner Rehman coming together in a pleasant banking fury to lead them through.Crowd presence and excitement surrounding the tournaments remained poor and even the floodlit Twenty20, the premier domestic attraction in the last two years, didn’t pull in as many as hoped. Coaches and players complained about the overly-packed season and the quality of pitches. They complained too about the inferior quality of balls, while players questioned the lack of financial rewards for turning out for a domestic season. No surprise then so many ditched the unpredictable pitches of Karachi to put their feet up before hectic club commitments out West.New kid on the block
Roll out the red carpet for Alam who not only swept away the awards ceremony for the Twenty20 with more prizes than he had room for on his ride, but also experienced bowlers throughout the season. All-round promise with bat and ball, his dedication and commitment bore fruit finally with a call-up to national camp and a likely breakthrough to the senior squad. Get his senior jersey stitched up, guys.Best comeback
That of Ijaz Ahmed, after six years of inactivity for Sialkot. He even managed a 68 in the Quaid final against Karachi. But barring that cameo, his sojourn remained highly ineffective.Quantity vs Quality?
Raza ended up playing 30 domestic matches through the season, including ODIs and Twenty20 matches. He’s lucky he wasn’t called up for Pakistan’s various international commitments through the season: Imran Farhat, who was, ended up playing 36 matches all told. Is there really a need for so many ODI tournaments, two big first-class tournaments, a Twenty20 and a Pentangular, plus various inter-district, grade-level games?

After a late start to this BBL due to injury, Marsh’s form has been impressive with 181 runs at 45.25 and a strike-rate of 138.16. Despite playing only five games so far, he was made three of Renegades’ six half-centuries, including an unbeaten 64 off 49 to guide them to victory in Finch’s farewell game on Saturday night.”I have loved playing for the Renegades, I’ve met some great people over the last five years and the friendships I’ve made will last a lifetime,” Marsh said. “This playing group is special. They’ve been amazing to me, amazing team-mates and even better friends.”Our members and fans are some of the most passionate out there and I’m so thankful for their support over the journey. Stick with us, there’s a huge amount of talent in this group and I have no doubt they’ll lead this group back to the top.”To the Renegades’ coaches and staff and everyone behind the scenes – thank you for backing me in from the start and over my final years. It’s made my job a little easier out in the middle.”Marsh moved to Renegades for the 2019-2020 season after a prolific spell with Perth Scorchers where he was a key part of their success, averaging 47.46 in 40 games for them.”I owe a lot to the Scorchers, I’ve got some fond memories of playing in Perth and really enjoyed my time there,” he said. “The back-to-back titles are up there for me as the most enjoyable moments I’ve experienced on a cricket field.”David Saker, Renegades’ head coach, lauded Marsh as still being among the best in the game even as he retires.”SOS is one of those blokes who is universally liked and admired by anyone who ever played with or against him, domestically and internationally,” he said. “If I could have any batter in Australia to help plot and chase down a total, it’d be SOS. He has raw power and he has the experience to wait for the right shot at the right time which is critical in T20 cricket.”To be putting in man of the match performances at the age of 40 is testament to Shaun’s preparation and commitment to this club.”With one T20 game to go, Marsh has 7050 runs at 37.90 and a strike-rate of 128.53 with 2477 of them coming for Kings XI in the IPL. In the BBL he stands at No. 6 in the all-time run-scorers.

New Zealand stick to their guns as third defeat loosens grip on semi-finals

Captain Latham defends decision to bowl first after comprehensive loss to South Africa

Sidharth Monga01-Nov-20232:07

Have New Zealand been unlucky?

In the larger context, New Zealand have had a typical campaign in the World Cup so far. They have made the best use of their resources despite injuries, they have been solid in the matches that they were expected to win, and have won one out of the four that could have gone either way. In two of the three defeats, they ran pretty strong teams close. However, in two of those defeats, New Zealand have omitted to do things you expect them to do every single time. There were free hits and dropped chances against Australia in Dharamsala, and then some more against South Africa in Pune. One of the better readers of conditions, and thus good at deciding what to do at the toss, New Zealand received some criticism for not making South Africa do what they don’t like to do: chase.Battered and bruised with five of their 15 players injured by the end of the night, New Zealand are sticking to their guns in the knowledge that they still control their fate, and have still to play two matches that – on form – they should be expected to win: against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Winning even one of them gives them a fair shout at making the semi-finals.For starters, neither captain Tom Latham at the post-match presentation nor Glenn Phillips at the press conference had any regrets about deciding to put South Africa in. Latham said if he had a chance to live the day over again, he would still have decided to chase.Tom Latham shares a few words before walking out•ICC/Getty Images”At the end of the day, we chose to do a toss what we thought was best on this pitch with the information that’s been given,” Phillips said. “And that’s what we go by every game. Obviously South Africa are incredibly strong batting first, but we’ve got an incredibly good bowling line-up and there was no reason that we couldn’t have restricted them to a total that could have been a lot easier to chase on there. Playing on at the end, I definitely thought it got better as well. So, I think had things gone slightly differently, we could definitely have come a lot closer than we did today.”We definitely recognised that they were playing the style of cricket that they wanted to play. But obviously, when any team tries to accelerate, you get opportunities. Obviously, Quinton [de Kock] had a little bit of luck today as well, which helps. And sometimes you need that as a batter. And then when that luck goes your way, the runs start to flow, things start to move a little bit, and once momentum starts changing, it’s hard to bring it back. So, a couple of things go to hand today. Maybe it looks slightly different.”The worrying part for New Zealand might be that it has now become more than “just a couple of things” not going to hand. Coming into this match, New Zealand had dropped more catches than any other side, and were bang in the middle of catching efficiency standings. While fielding has a limited impact on the game, and catching efficiency is not the ideal indicator of how well a side is fielding, New Zealand generally have these things covered. In Pune, Trent Boult went on to add two more drops to the list, chances that he would back himself to take most of the time.Related

South Africa smash England's World Cup six-hitting record

Rassie van der Dussen sets South Africa's tempo with another thankless century

What are New Zealand's semi-final chances looking like after three losses?

“At the end of the day a couple of tough chances were dropped, a missed run-out when his back was turned to the bowler’s end,” Phillips said. “You have no idea where Quinton’s actually standing. Obviously, he had a little bit more time than he thought, but at the end of the day, it’s not like we’ve been dropping straightforward chances or creating a lot of blunders in the field. We’ve definitely put a lot of pressure on the opposition in the field, and we’ve saved a lot of runs and obviously sometimes people drop catches and that’s just the way things go.”The injury situation might be alarming, and the losing streak might make things look more alarming than they should be, but you’d rather be in the New Zealand camp than Pakistan’s or Afghanistan’s. “It’s just two wins away, and that hopefully puts us in third or fourth place, potentially even second,” Phillips said. “So, I think if we can just keep sticking to our basics, what we do best on the field, everything will be all right.”We try to remain level-headed throughout everything, not ride the highs too high and the lows too low. So, I think for us, it’s go about our business as we’ve done the whole way through, just keeping things simple, sticking to what we do best. Obviously, England, Australia, South Africa … they all play a very aggressive brand of cricket and we’ve got our own brand and if we stick to it, we know that we’re fighters, we keep coming back time and time again, and when it matters most, we really put the foot down.”

How Andrea Berta is planning to sign Matheus Cunha for Arsenal

A report has shared exactly how new Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is planning to tempt Wolves forward Matheus Cunha with a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Andrea Berta tipped to sign Matheus Cunha for Arsenal

The arrival of Berta has brought plenty of speculation linking the Italian with a summer swoop for Cunha.

Wolves’ versatile star striker, who’s racked up 15 goals in all competitions for Vitor Pereira’s side this term, is set to be available for £62.5 million this summer, after the Brazilian put pen to paper on a new four-year contract in early February.

That price comes in the form of a new release clause penned into his fresh terms, which allows clubs to trigger the option and bypass negotiations with Wolves if they’re prepared to pay the fee.

This will of course attract elite-level sides considering Cunha’s exceptional 2024/2025 campaign, where he starred for Wolves in a variety of attacking positions, and manager Mikel Arteta is widely rumoured to favour versatility when it comes to signing new players.

Berta also has a connection to Cunha through their time together at Atlético Madrid, with Arsenal’s new transfer chief signing the 25-year-old from Hertha Berlin to back Diego Simeone in 2021.

The forward scored seven goals and eight assists for Atlético in all competitions before departing for Wolves, where he has since gone on to shine at Molineux, and reports have claimed that Berta has told Arsenal he wishes to sign Cunha this summer (The Boot Room).

Former Gunners striker Jeremie Aliadiere also predicted that Berta could help Arsenal to strike a deal for Cunha, almost immediately after reports surfaced that the 53-year-old was closing in on the sporting director’s job.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhareacts after the match

“Berta knows Cunha from their time at Atlético Madrid, and it could be a deal that goes through,” said Aliadiere.

“He’s having a great season in a team that’s struggling to fight relegation. That shows you how good he is and how quickly he’s adapted to the Premier League. He could be a good signing too.”

How Andrea Berta is planning to sign Matheus Cunha for Arsenal

Now, a report has shared how Berta is plotting to lure the Olympic gold medalist to N5 this summer.

Indeed, a Spanish media source claims that Berta wants to “leverage his bond” with Cunha to sign him for Arsenal, and the official has made it “clear” behind the scenes that Wolves’ attacking sensation should be his first major signing.

Their strong relationship apparently developed at Atlético, where Berta was “instrumental” in his transfer from Hertha, and later his departure to England. Interestingly, previous interim director Jason Ayto and the Arsenal recruitment team also expressed an interest in Cunha during the last transfer window, but a bid ultimately didn’t materialise for the player.

However, Cunha’s new release clause presents a golden opportunity for Arsenal to seal an agreement this summer instead, and Berta could prove to be key.

“He is a special player. He can do things that can make the difference in small details,” said Wolves boss Pereira about Cunha.

“Cunha is a player, in my opinion, who can reach high standards in this league. I hope not [elsewhere] because we need him.”
