He’s now worth 4175% more: Wilder must regret selling Sheffield United star

Chris Wilder very much has Sheffield United woven into his DNA, with the Blades boss a United player on two occasions during his playing days, on top of now also taking on the Bramall Lane reins the same amount of times.

He will be gunning for his third promotion at the helm come the end of this long and dramatic Championship campaign, with the South Yorkshire outfit in a healthy spot in the division to do just that, even with the demoralising 3-1 defeat to promotion rivals Leeds United still hurting.

SheffieldUnitedmanagerChris Wilder reacts after the match

Over the past couple of promotion stories, Wilder has relied on some lethal attackers to get his team over the line, away from the current crop of Tom Cannon and Co.

Down memory lane: Chris Wilder's best strikers at Sheffield United

Of course, no list chronicling some of the revered United manager’s best forwards would be complete without a mention of Blades icon Billy Sharp.

The EFL veteran – who has ten goals this season on the books of nearby Doncaster Rovers – would fire home a ridiculous 129 strikes from 377 United appearances, with his sublime 23 league strikes during the 2018/19 season getting his team over the line to move up to the top-flight.

Away from the much-adored 39-year-old, Wilder has also had the likes of Oli McBurnie and David McGoldrick to call upon down the years, with McGoldrick still firing in the goals for Notts County in the same division Sharp now plies his trade in.

Amazingly, the ageing attacker has 13 strikes in 26 games for the promotion-chasers during 2024/25, with his time in South Yorkshire seeing him bag a memorable 30 times from 136 outings.

McBurnie would blow hot and cold a lot for Wilder’s men, but the Scotsman’s heroics last campaign – even as the Blades sunk down to the Championship – saw him land a bold switch to Las Palmas out in Spain, having kept his head held high with six strikes from 26 league encounters.

But, there is another former face that is removed from this conversation unfortunately, having been sold on during the fledging stages of his Bramall Lane education by Wilder, before then becoming a top striker elsewhere.

The ex-Sheffield United attacker now worth 4175% more

Worth around £290k during the peak of his playing days in South Yorkshire – according to Transfermarkt – it’s fair to say Che Adams’ short but sweet stint with the Blades set him up for a path to stardom.

Adams would only don a United strip for 55 clashes before moving onto pastures at Birmingham City, but the former non-league hotshot would take the EFL by storm with 15 strikes across those games.

Fast forward to last season and it’s clear that the Scotsman has been able to cement himself as a deadly sharpshooter in the second tier, having fired home 15 total league goals for Southampton on the way to the Saints tasting promotion.

Amazingly, Serie A side Torino would come calling for the “terrific” forward – as he was once lauded by Ally McCoist – services after that, with Adams now worth way more than his once meagre £290k price tag since making this leap to Italy.

As can be seen looking at the table above, Adams’ current inflated value stands at a way heftier £12.4m, with Torino winning themselves an outrageous steal, considering the 28-year-old joined on a free transfer.

Still, when weighing up his £290k price tag next to his new £12.4m valuation, that is a percentage increase of 4175%, with Adams settling in well to his new environment in Turin with eight strikes coming his way during 2024/25 to date.

In another reality, United might well have kept a firmer grip on Adams for longer, but Wilder will hope his camp at it is can triumphantly win promotion.

Impact Player in IPL 2023 – all you need to know about the new rule

The Impact Player can only be an Indian, unless there are fewer than four overseas players in a team’s starting XI

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Dec-2022

The Impact Player is a new innovation to watch out for in IPL 2023•BCCI

IPL 2023 will be the first season to feature an Impact Player – one substitute who can come in to bat and bowl – but the league has stipulated that the Impact Player can only be an Indian unless there are fewer than four overseas players in a team’s starting XI.Follow the 2023 IPL auction LIVE

You can watch the auction live in India on Star Sports, and follow live analysis with Tom Moody, Ian Bishop, Wasim Jaffer and Stuart Binny right here on ESPNcricinfo.

“This will add a new tactical, strategic dimension to the game,” the IPL said in a release two days ahead of the player auction on December 23. “A number of team sports allow teams to make tactical substitutes i.e., football, rugby, basketball, baseball. The substitute is allowed to perform or participate like any other regular player.”Here’s all you need to know about the newest innovation in the IPL:So how is the Impact Player going to work in IPL 2023?
It’s fairly straightforward. In addition to the playing XI, a team will have to list four substitutes at the toss. They can use any one of the four subs as their Impact Player. Can the Impact Player be brought in at any time?
There are a few options. A captain can nominate the team’s Impact Player and bring them in before the start of an innings; at the end of an over; and at the fall of a wicket or when a batter retires. However, if the bowling side brings in an Impact Player during an over – at the fall of a wicket or if a batter retires – then that particular player will not be allowed to bowl the remaining balls of the over.Related

How much impact will the Impact Player rule have?

New-look Sunrisers Hyderabad packed with power and pace

Punjab Kings: Another new captain and coach for a new season

What happens to the player who is replaced by the Impact Player?
The replaced player will take no further part in the match. Not even as a substitute fielder. When can’t the Impact Player be an overseas player? And why is that restriction in place?
If a team names four overseas players in their starting XI, then they can only bring in an Indian as the Impact Player. This is to limit the number of overseas players per game to four per team – something the IPL has adhered to since its inception. However, if a team starts with three or fewer overseas players in their XI, then they can bring in an overseas player as the Impact Player. But the incoming overseas player should be among the four substitutes named at the toss.So does this change the number of players who can bat in an IPL game?
No, it doesn’t. Only 11 players can bat. So if the batting team’s Impact Player is a batter who replaces a batter who has been dismissed/retired, then one of the players yet to come in – presumably a bowler – will not bat.How does it work for the bowling team?
When the bowling team brings in their Impact Player, they will be allowed to bowl their full quota of four overs irrespective of the number of overs bowled by the player they are replacing. For example, say a team has a powerplay specialist and bowls them out at the start of the innings. In theory, they could then replace the powerplay specialist with a death-overs specialist – their Impact Player – who can still bowl four overs. But remember, if the bowling team brings in their Impact Player in the middle of an over, they will have to wait till the end of the over before that player can bowl.Does a delayed start impact the Impact Player rule?
The IPL said that there will be no change to the implementation of the Impact Player rule if “a delayed start reduces the total amount of overs available to both sides to less than 20 overs per innings prior to the commencement of the match… Impact Player can be utilised at any time during the match.”

Per journalist , Juventus have shown strong interest in signing Italy international Tonali from Newcastle United and are reportedly ready to include Luiz in the deal. The report adds that the Magpies will not entertain any transfer fee below €70 million (£59m/$79m), and they are yet to decide on Tonali's future. The Serie A giants, on the other hand, are determined to sign the Italian star and could offer Luiz plus €30m in cash.

Spurs open talks for lightning-quick Dragusin upgrade in £25m "warrior"

This season has been a tough one for the Tottenham Hotspur faithful.

Their team have looked good here and there, and can play anyone off the park on their day, but it would be fair to say the opposite is also true.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are arguably the most entertaining team in the country but currently sit down in 11th place, and the most significant reason for that is their dreadful defence, which has seen them conceed a whopping 28 goals.

One of the worst offenders has been backup centre-back Radu Dragusin, who has been relied upon far more than anyone would have expected this season, so it shouldn’t be a massive surprise that recent reports have linked the club with an ideal upgrade.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are one of several teams interested in Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov.

In fact, Bailey has revealed that Spurs and fellow Premier League side Newcastle United have already made contact and ‘commenced talks’ over a potential move this year.

While the competition from the Toon is far from ideal, the good news is that the 20-year-old is said to be valued at just £25m.

Abdukodir Khusanov in international action

It could be a complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Khusanov’s ability and potential, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as he’d be an ideal upgrade on Dragusin.

How Khusanov compares to Dragusin

Now, if they were fit, Spurs’ starting centre-back pairing would undoubtedly be Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, as they are some of the most highly thought-of defenders in the league and complement one another quite well.

However, as this season and the last have shown, they are both increasingly injury-prone, which has thrust Dragusin from a backup role into someone who’s starting games on a regular basis, and it’s him who could be upgraded upon by signing Khusanov.

With that said, how do the pair compare?

Paris St Germain's Ousmane Dembele in action with RC Lens' AbduqodirKhusanov

Well, when taking a look under the hood at their underlying numbers, it becomes increasingly apparent that the Uzbeck “warrior,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is the far superior player.

For example, despite being two years younger, the Lens ace comes out ahead in the vast majority of relevant metrics, such as tackles, tackles won, blocks, interceptions, clearances, ball recoveries and aerial duels won, all per 90.

Moreover, his underlying numbers also suggest that he is far more competent than the Romanian international going forward, as he emerges victorious in metrics such as non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive passes, shots and shots on target, also per 90.

Finally, the Tashkent-born gem has something else over his potential competition: speed.

The 6 foot 1 titan is the fastest player in Ligue 1, registering a sprint speed of 36.48km/h, which is surprisingly close to Van de Ven’s top speed this season of 37.12km/h, which he clocked against Manchester United in October.

Ultimately, Khusanov looks to be an incredibly exciting prospect who is already good enough to replace Dragusin as Spurs’ backup centre-back this season.

Therefore, Daniel Levy and Co should do all they can to secure his services this month before someone else beats them to him.

Supreme Court to hear BCCI plea concerning Ganguly, Shah tenures

Three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India to consider reviewing 2018 judgement on board’s constitution

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Jul-2022The Supreme Court is likely to hear on Thursday the BCCI’s plea requesting for several amendments to its constitution, which could roll back some of the most significant reforms that were recommended by RM Lodha Committee and approved by the court in 2018.The case will be heard by a three-judge bench led by the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana.Thursday’s hearing will be the first time in more than two years that the Supreme Court will take up the BCCI’s petition, which was originally filed in December 2019. The board then filed a fresh application in April 2020, and last week it requested the court to hear the case urgently.Among the key reforms that the BCCI has asked the court to review are the mandatory cooling-off period for its office-bearers, modifying the disqualification criteria for holding office, giving unprecedented powers to the board secretary, and preventing the court from having a say if the BCCI wants to alter its constitution in the future. (Read more on the BCCI’s proposed amendments.)Related

Supreme Court approves new BCCI constitution

At present, the cooling-off period means that an office bearer who has held any post for two consecutive terms (six years) either at a state association or in the BCCI, or a combination of both, shall not be eligible to contest any further election without completing a cooling-off period of three years. During the cooling-off period, the person cannot serve in any capacity at both the BCCI or state level. In its 2018 judgement passing the new BCCI constitution, the Supreme Court had relaxed a couple of the original recommendations including the one concerning the cooling-off period. As per the Lodha Committee recommendation an office bearer – at BCCI or state association – would need to take a three-year break after serving one term of three years. However, the court changed that and allowed an office bearer to serve two consecutive terms (six years) separately at the state association or the board, or a combination of both, while retaining the maximum tenure of nine years. In October 2019, a new BCCI administration was elected with Sourav Ganguly as president, Jay Shah as secretary, Arun Dhumal as treasurer, and Jayesh George as joint secretary. Within two months of taking charge, the Ganguly administration moved the court contesting the cooling-off period: it wanted the cooling-off period to come into effect after the office bearer had been in a post for six consecutive years at one place – either a state association or the BCCI but not a combination of both.At present, all five BCCI office-bearers including vice-president Rajiv Shukla have finished six consecutive years in some office, having earlier served at their respective state associations before becoming BCCI office bearers.Ganguly was meant to start his cooling-off period after July 2020, having started as secretary at the Cricket Association of Bengal in 2014, following which he became the association’s president in 2015, and was re-elected in September 2019 before moving to the BCCI.As for Shah, he was elected joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in 2014. The internal records of the GCA suggest Shah’s tenure started on September 8, 2013.In Shukla’s case, he is ineligible to continue as a BCCI office-bearer on the basis of him being a Member of Parliament – as per the board’s constitution a politician cannot serve as an office bearer. The challenge for the current Supreme Court bench, which also includes Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli, is to decide whether to change – and on what grounds – the 2018 judgement, which was passed by Justice Dr DY Chandrachud, one of the most senior judges in the court who was part of this case since 2016.While adding leniency to the COA’s original cooling-off recommendation, Justice Chandrachud had said that “allowing an individual to act as an office bearer for six years in continuation is a sufficiently long period for experience and knowledge gained to be deployed in the interest of the game without at the same time resulting in a monopoly of power.”The cooling-off period, Justice Chandrachud said, was necessary because it would be act as a “safe guard” against “vested personal interests”, as well ensure against the “concentration of power in a few hands” while encouraging more administrators to gain experience.”Cooling off must be accepted as a means to prevent a few individuals from regarding the administration of cricket as a personal turf. The game will be better off without cricketing oligopolies,” Justice Chandrachud had written in his judgement. And that is the basis of a counter filed against the BCCI petition this week by Subramaniam Swamy, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party that leads the Indian government. According to Bar and Bench, an Indian legal website, Swamy said the BCCI request was aimed at “negating and destroying” the cooling-off period, “resulting in a monopoly of power in the hand of few individuals,” and “destroying the quintessence” of the 2018 Supreme Court judgement.”

Should Mumbai Indians give Jasprit Bumrah the new ball?

Big pictureAt the start of IPL 2022, not many would have expected Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to be lurking at the bottom of the points table for most of the season. But that’s how it has turned out to be. Five-time champions Mumbai are out of the race for the playoffs, while defending champions Super Kings are hanging by the thinnest of the threads. On Thursday, Super Kings might have a slight advantage, though. They are coming off what their captain MS Dhoni called “a perfect game”, while Mumbai would be smarting from a 52-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders despite Jasprit Bumrah’s five-for.Watch live in the USA

You can watch the match on ESPN+ in English and in Hindi.

But Super Kings are not too worried about if and how they can qualify for the playoffs. In fact, they seem to have already started planning for the next year.In Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, they have figured out their opening pair. The two have put together one half-century and two century stands in just four innings. In the bowling department, Mukesh Choudhary seems to have turned the page after a poor start to the season.Mumbai, too, can follow that path and try out uncapped South African Tristan Stubbs. He could replace Ramandeep Singh, with Basil Thampi coming in for Riley Meredith to keep the overseas players’ count to four. Or, Stubbs can replace an out-of-form Kieron Pollard in a direct swap, but that will leave Rohit Sharma with just five bowling options. And if there is a match Mumbai want Pollard the bowler for, it’s this one. (See “Strategy punts”)Related

But Mumbai could bring on Bumrah against him. Bumrah has got Dube out twice in 17 balls while giving away only ten runs. Super Kings have three left-handers in their top six. Mumbai can counter that by bringing in offspinner Hrithik Shokeen for legspinner M Ashwin. Pollard has had an underwhelming season with the bat but against Super Kings, he could be handy with the ball. He has dismissed Conway three times in 17 balls for just 17 runs. He has been successful against Robin Uthappa too, with three dismissals in 32 balls for 42 runs. Against Moeen Ali, it’s two dismissals in 25 balls for 25 runs. So Mumbai may use his bowling skills more than they usually do.Stats that matter In IPL 2022, Pollard has scored only 144 runs in 11 innings at an average of 14.40 and a strike rate of 107.46. Among those who have faced a minimum of 100 balls, only Kane Williamson (96.13) and Ajinkya Rahane (100.96) have a lower strike rate. His numbers against spin are even worse: five dismissals at an average of 6.80 and a strike rate of 82.92. Rohit, too, has struggled against spin this season, scoring only 33 runs off 32 balls while being dismissed four times. Bumrah has contrasting numbers against Gaikwad and Dhoni. Gaikwad has taken him for 21 runs off ten balls without getting out, while Dhoni has scored only 60 runs off 60 balls against him with three dismissals.

Crystal Palace now keen on signing "brilliant" attacker on free transfer

Crystal Palace are now keen on signing a “brilliant” attacker who is available on a free transfer, according to a report.

Palace improving

After a concerning start to their Premier League campaign, Palace’s results have picked up in recent weeks, collecting eight points from their last four outings.

Most recently, the Eagles played out a 2-2 draw with reigning champions Manchester City, indicating they have turned the corner under the helm of Oliver Glasner. However, the manager may still be keen to strengthen his squad this January.

As it stands, Glasner’s side are only just above the bottom three, meaning their improved form will need to continue if they are to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle towards the back end of the season.

To make sure they avoid the dreaded drop, Palace have started to run the rule over potential January signings, and it was recently reported that they believe Man City’s James McAtee will be available this winter, most likely for a fee of around £20m.

McAtee is not the only player on the shortlist, as the Eagles are said to have made an approach to sign Chesterfield striker James Berry-McNally, who is valued at around £5m by his current employers.

Palace targeting Ryan Kent

It is clear that Glasner is looking to strengthen his attacking options this winter, and another target has now entered the frame, with reports from Spain detailing that Palace are among the teams interested in signing free agent Ryan Kent.

However, there is set to be stiff competition for Kent’s signature, as Ipswich Town and Leicester City are also said to be keen on the winger, who most recently played for Fenerbahce.

Given the Englishman’s contract status, he is available on a free transfer, which makes him an attractive option for the three Premier League clubs, who are all looking to add depth to their squads.

The 28-year-old is also well-liked due to his versatility in attack, which allows him to play on the wing and in more central roles.

It is fair to say the winger was unimpressive during his time in Turkey, picking up just one goal and two assists in 19 appearances in all competitions, but he could yet be a decent signing for Palace.

The former Rangers man was exceptional during his time north of the border, weighing in with 33 goals and 56 assists in 218 appearances, so if he is able to get back to that level, he will almost certainly improve the Eagles.

Once hailed as “brilliant” by journalist Josh Bunting, Kent has proven he is capable of making the step up to the Premier League in the past, so it is exciting news that Palace are in the race for his signature, particularly considering it is a low-risk move.
