Glasgow Rangers will not be playing in the group stages of the Champions League this season after they were beaten 2-0 by Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday night.

The Ibrox giants, who had to play at Hampden Park, conceded two goals in the space of two minutes in the 82nd and 83rd minute to lose 3-1 on aggregate, after a 1-1 draw in the first leg last week.

Philippe Clement's side will now have to test their luck in the Europa League and turn their focus back to domestic action with a League Cup clash against St. Johnstone at the weekend.

The Belgian boss has some decisions to make after his team's poor display in Europe and one player who must be ruthlessly ditched from the XI is Ross McCausland.

Ross McCausland's struggles on Tuesday

The Northern Ireland international was selected to start on the right flank for Rangers, with Cyriel Dessers leading the line, Tom Lawrence in the number ten role, and Jefte on the left.

It was a surprising selection by Clement because the academy graduate had been ineffective, with zero goals and zero assists, as a starter in the first leg before being dropped for the Scottish Premiership win over Motherwell.

Instead of justifying his place in the team, the 21-year-old forward was even worse than Lawrence. The Scottish Sun's Derek McGregor handed the Welshman a player rating of 5/10 and highlighted his teasing ball into the box as a positive, before the midfielder faded later in the game.

Clement did not withdraw the former Derby County man from the game until the 85th minute, which suggests that he was relatively pleased with his display for the most part.

Whereas, McCausland was hauled off at the break after an ineffective first half. The aforementioned McGregor awarded the winger a dismal match rating of 4/10 and the manager's decision to take him off at the interval suggests that he agreed that it was an underwhelming display.

The player Clement must unleash instead

Clement must now ruthlessly drop the Northern Irishman from the starting XI after his no-show in the Champions League, as he has failed to provide a goal or an assist in any of his three outings – including two starts – as a winger.

The former Monaco boss must now bring Wolfsburg loanee Vaclav Cerny back into the side because he has the quality to make a greater impact in the final third from a right wing position.

As you can see in the table above, the Czechia international has enjoyed a strong start to life in the Premiership this season, which cannot be said of McCausland.

The 26-year-old star also provided a beautiful assist for Dessers in the first leg against Dynamo Kyiv, with a fantastic inswinging cross, which is why it was surprising to see him left out of the starting XI at Hampden Park.

McCausland struggling, and performing worse than Lawrence, on Tuesday night should now see him ditched from the team to make room for Cerny to come in.

It is inevitable that some players need time to adjust to their new clubs, which is certainly the case for Mbappe. He has gone from being the star of Paris Saint-Germain and the French league to a team full of superstars and expectations that rival Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Madrid. Once he shakes off the nerves and complications of his role under Carlo Ancelotti, the World Cup winner will surely start firing on a regular basis again.

While Enzo Maresca's side have welcomed sundry signings to the fold, they have not yet fully addressed the issues up top, and Tel, a dynamic and multi-skilled forward, could be the perfect option to complement a talented crew.

Indeed, Tel's first two seasons as a Bayern player have suggested that he boasts the kind of prolific style to make a real impact at a team like Chelsea, and while the west London outfit has emphasised the strengthening of its youth fold, the Frenchman would stake a good claim to be the cream of the crop, such is his quality.

He took bounding strides in the right direction last season, earning a bit more opportunity in the German top flight and taking it with the firmest of grips, notching 12 goal contributions despite starting just six matches. It's no wonder that Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic dubbed him "one of the biggest talents in Europe".

The 6-foot forward's prowess, as such, is neatly reflected through his statistical round-up from the past 12 months. As per FBref, Tel ranked among the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals and the top 1% for assists, the top 9% for pass completion and the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90.

A deceptively sharp playmaker, Tel is more than just a striker, although he is pretty special in that regard, with analyst Ben Mattinson already describing him as an "elite-level goalscorer" and a "two-footed ball-striking machine".

One can only imagine the kind of havoc he could wreak if provided with a role of greater importance, and Chelsea would be happy to oblige.

While Maresca's unit is not exactly the most threadbare on English shores, Tel has more than enough quality to fire his way into a significant standing, unleashing the kind of prolificness from up front – wherever he may be placed, tactically flexible and positionally fluid – that was lacking last term.

Of course, there's one aforementioned man who did not conform to the tonal convention under Mauricio Pochettino, and that's Palmer. He was daring and destructive, dastardly to those against him. Tel could be the missing ingredient to take the Three Lions star to another level entirely.

Chelsea improved upon the dismality of the 2022/23 campaign, beleaguered in their 12th-place final standing in the Premier League, and qualified for the Conference League after finishing sixth (knocked from their Europa League spot after Manchester United won the FA Cup).

There is still much to work on but Palmer was simply sublime in his role, scoring 25 goals and adding 15 assists across all competitions.

Maresca will seek to implement his ball-heavy, carefully-wrought style of football seamlessly at Stamford Bridge, and while Tel is a sharp distributor, it is his remarkable clinical edge that marks him as the perfect fit.

Palmer might steal the headlines for his goalscoring but he is impactful through his playmaking too, actually ranking among the top 10% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League last season for assists, the top 8% for shot-creating actions and the top 3% for progressive passes per 90.

Therefore, one of the continent's most dynamic and electrifying partnerships could be borne from the addition of Tel. Chelsea need only pay the price now – though it's not likely to be cheap.

The transfer window has been open for just over two weeks now, and after announcing the signing of Lucas Nygaard last week, Arsenal are on the lookout for their next addition.

The Premier League runners-up were thrilling to watch at times last season, but a lack of cutting-edge midway through the year saw them end the campaign empty-handed. So it's unsurprising that the majority of players they have been linked to in the last few weeks have been attackers.

Be that Benjamin Sesko last month, Viktor Gyokeres in recent weeks or Spain's rapid winger Nico Williams most recently, it's clear the North Londoners are after more firepower this summer.

However, the latest star touted for a move to the Emirates might just be the most exciting forward of the lot and someone who would look incredible alongside Williams.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a report from Spain, Arsenal have maintained their interest in Napoli's star striker, Victor Osimhen, who is expected to leave Italy this summer.

The report claims that the Nigerian superstar's most likely destination is the Premier League, and while 'several clubs' are willing to make a bid for his services, the Gunners and Chelsea remain his leading suitors.

The Neapolitans are still holding out for a team to pay his €120m release clause, which is around £102m, but there is a real chance that the fee could be reduced in negotiations.

It would be an expensive deal to get over the line regardless, but if Arsenal want to end their two-decade title drought next season, paying for Osimhen may be the way to do that – and a partnership between him and Williams could be a sight to behold.

Why Osimhen would be a great signing and teammate for Williams

So, the main reason that Arsenal and many other clubs want to sign the "Nigerian nightmare", as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is quite simple: he's a goalscoring machine.

Despite enduring something of a down season last year, the £209k-per-week poacher still scored 17 goals and provided four assists in 32 appearances. During the campaign prior, he found the back of the net a staggering 31 times in 39 appearances while also providing five assists for good measure.

In contrast, Kai Havertz has scored 23 goals and provided eight assists in 98 appearances over the last two seasons, while Gabriel Jesus has scored 19 goals and provided 15 assists in 69 games across the same period.

This incredible ability to put the ball in the back of the net would surely see the creative numbers of players like Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka explode in North London, and if Edu and Co can add Williams into the mix, there might not be a defence in the league capable of stopping the Gunners' attack.

The main reason the Spaniard would be such an incredible partner for the "world-class" Napoli star, as dubbed by managerial icon José Mourinho, is the fact he racked up a frankly absurd 19 assists in 37 appearances last season to go with his eight goals, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.37 games for Athletic Bilbao.

The idea of Osimhen having that level of service to his left and Saka to his right – who provided 14 assists in 47 games last season – should excite Arteta.

Therefore, if the club has the chance to sign the Nigerian superstar this summer, they should take it, and if they can bring in Williams as well, then the Gunners may well be champions this time next year.

The same cannot be said for his squad though. The departures this summer could run into double figures, with the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Antony and Scott McTominay among those who could depart irrespective of who is in charge come the first game of next season.

There is more confusion over Sofyan Amrabat too; just two weeks ago, it seemed as though he had no future at the club beyond the end of his loan spell from Fiorentina, and now it appears that there is less certainty over where he is playing next season following an excellent performance in the FA Cup final. It's been a regrettable end to the Premier League season for Spurs, who all but have to settle for a Europa League place as Aston Villa take cruise control in the race for fourth and Champions League qualification next term.

Unai Emery's side hold the mathematical advantage and could secure fourth in their next two games, regardless of what else happens in north London. The north Londoners have tasted bitter defeat in four of their last five top flight matches, including a few drubbings, and it highlights the work which still has to be done on Postecoglou's team.

"We need change. Change has to happen," Postecoglou said on his Spurs team. "You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that.

"It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about.

More recently, some reports have claimed that Tottenham are also open to offers for both Emerson Royal and Yves Bissouma, so it appears barely anybody is safe.

Now, according to Football Insider, Tottenham have already begun discussions over multiple summer exit moves. Chairman Daniel Levy is seeking ways to bolster summer funds and trim the squad down, especially as a deal for Brentford striker Ivan Toney is "on the cards".

The "world-class" striker could cost as much as £50 million, but he could be worth that amount given Postecoglou's need for a new number nine to replace Harry Kane. Toney scored 20 league goals last season before his ban for alleged gambling breaches, so there is little question he'd strengthen Spurs.

It could be that Bruno's head is turned by a move elsewhere in the summer transfer window, however, with Manchester City one of the teams believed to be in the race to sign him. The reigning champions see him as a strong target, and the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are also in the mix – all teams who can offer a place in Europe's elite competition next term.

There is no definite decision regarding the 26-year-old, who will clearly be weighing up his future, but reports of him buying a new £4m house for his family in nearby Darras Hall will have acted as a boost to the supporters, suggesting he may be staying put.
