Bumrah: Mumbai Indians will back their new faces in this transition phase despite four straight losses

With four defeats in as many matches, the start of IPL 2022 has been far from ideal for five-time champions Mumbai Indians. However, their experienced quick, Jasprit Bumrah, believes that in T20 cricket, anyone could have a bad game and “to quickly move on” is all that matters.”This is T20 cricket, anyone can get targeted, anyone can have a good game or a bad game,” Bumrah said ahead of Mumbai’s match against Punjab Kings. “But, in this game, it is very important that you do not carry baggage going forward because there are a lot of matches on the go and you have to quickly move on.”As is the case with all teams, Mumbai are dealing with a major reshuffle following the IPL 2022 mega auction, with plenty of new names slotting in. While the likes of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav have done their bit at the top, the inexperience in the middle-order has brought about Mumbai’s downfall on more than one occasion.Related

In their second game of the season, against Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai collapsed from 121 for 2 to 136 for 6 in the space of 15 balls to fall short by 23 runs. Then, in their most recent outing, against Royal Challengers Bangalore, they crumbled from 50 for 1 to 79 for 6.While middle-order collapses are not ideal, Bumrah insisted that they needed to show faith in the people they have. “This is a transition phase,” he said. “We have got some new faces in the middle who are learning about their game and will only get better. So, I don’t think we need to panic and make a lot of changes. We just need to be a little patient and back their talent, which we are going to do.”That is what I feel the plan going further would be. We have the belief in their talent, that is why they are in the squad, so we give them enough games and we back their talent.”But how do the players pick themselves up after such an underwhelming start? Bumrah says that there is no inspiration required when playing cricket at such a high level, and that the team is doing everything in their capacity to turn things around.”You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, right? You don’t need to bring new inspiration. Everybody enjoys the game, that is why you play cricket. No other inspiration is required,” Bumrah said.”We are trying to find new ways. There have been a lot of discussions on how do we make an impact on this current situation that is going on. We are focusing on that and have come up with a few plans, so let’s see if that works, and we will try to use it in the next match.”Mumbai play their next game at the same venue as their last two matches: the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. When asked what the team needed to succeed on the Pune surface, pat came Bumrah’s reply: “I would say win the toss. That really helps as well.”Mumbai have been on the wrong side of coin tosses in three out of four instances so far this season. And with dew having a substantial bearing on the proceedings, defending a target hasn’t always been easy.”So far in the four games we have bowled second three times, so it is a little different when the dew settles in, and how the wicket reacts from the first innings,” Bumrah said on the nature of the surfaces in the tournament.”It is interesting to see how the wickets will go after midway of the tournament. We’ll be keeping an eye but right now we are just focusing on what is the current scenario and if at all we bowl second, what are the options that we can bring to the table and what are the options that we should use when there is dew on the wicket.”

'Always crying' – Thibaut Courtois 'fed up with victimhood' as Real Madrid goalkeeper blasts Diego Simeone and Atletico's complaints after Champions League clash

In a case of the pot calling the kettle black, Real Madrid's Thibaut Courtois has blasted Atletico Madrid for complaining about referees after loss.

Real Madrid win after controversial Alvarez callSimeone complains about the referee's decisionCourtois 'fed up of victimhood' by Atletico MadridFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Real Madrid have done what they do best in the Champions League: persevere. Los Blancos survived city rivals Atletico Madrid's onslaught at Wanda Metropolitano as the hosts took an early lead via Conor Gallagher and dominated the clash. However, Carlo Ancelotti's side were able to drag the game into a penalty shootout, which Los Blancos won as Julian Alvarez saw his spot kick disallowed for a 'double kick'.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone later criticised the referee's decision to review Alvarez's penalty and claimed that his Argentinian striker did not initiate double contact with the ball during his spot kick. Real Madrid keeper Cortouis has now hypocritically claimed that he is 'fed up' with the Rojiblancos' 'victimhood', just weeks after his side launched a campaign against La Liga referees for not giving decisions in their favour.

Getty Images SportWHAT COURTOIS SAID

Speaking to the media, Courtois said: "I'm always fed up with that victimhood, always crying over things like that. Referees don't want to benefit a team, neither in Spain nor in Europe; they saw it clearly, and they called it that way. They're human, and with technology, they saw it clearly. If you're winning 1-0 in the first minute and don't go for the second, that's the fault of their game.

"In the end, it was a lottery. I felt like it was a double, and I told the referee. It's not easy to see, and it's bad luck for them. Then it was bad luck for me that Correa didn't get it out. We didn't play our best game, but we got through, and that's what matters."

WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?

Ancelotti's side have now booked their place in the Champions League quarterfinal, and they will now take on Mikel Arteta's Arsenal on April 8. However, before that, they will have to contend with the challenges of La Liga as they remain second on the table despite Barcelona having played one game fewer than them.

Wolves want rid of £35m youngster they thought would be their next Neves

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a habit of signing Portuguese players in recent years. Some, like the signings of Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto, proved to be resounding successes. All three enjoyed stellar careers at Molineux before moving on to pastures new.

Others, however, like the signings of Silvio, Ruben Vinagre, Francisco Trincao and Goncalo Guedes, didn’t work out, or haven’t worked out, quite so well.

Goncalo Guedes for Wolves

Guedes’ time in the West Midlands has been particularly underwhelming. Since completing a £27.5 million move to Wolves from Valencia in 2022, he’s made just 25 appearances for the club, spending the majority of the last two seasons out on-loan, first with his boyhood club Benfica and then with Villarreal.

He’s now back at Molineux, but according to recent reports from Spain, the 27-year-old, who earns a whopping £90,000 per-week, wants to leave Wolves as soon as possible, with Villarreal among the potential takers.

Fabio Silva transfer update

Another of Wolves’ Portuguese flops who could soon be on his way out of the club is Fabio Silva. The 22-year-old striker joined Wolves from FC Porto for a club record fee of £35 million, but his time with the Wanderers has been nothing short of a disaster. In 73 games for the club, he’s scored just five goals and has been loaned out on four separate occasions.

Currently, he resides in Spain with La Liga side Las Palmas, with whom he signed a one-year loan deal in the summer. Though he’s enjoyed a slight upturn in form in Gran Canaria, scoring three goals in nine games, according to Molineux News, Wolves have no interest in seeing him return to Molineux.

The publication reports that the club “want him off the wage bill” regardless of whether his form for Las Palmas continues, and that there are a number of clubs in Spain and Portugal that would be willing to take him on next year.

The next Neves? Not so much…

Big things were expected from Silva following his record move from Porto, with Wolves chairman Jeff Shi comparing his signing to that of Ruben Neves, who also joined from Porto five years prior.

“The timing of this deal is similar to the timing of when we bought Ruben Neves; we’ve waited for the right time to get a high-quality player at the right price,” said Shi.

On Silva’s supposed quality, Shi said: “Fabio has the potential to be a generational talent and for us to see him develop under Nuno is very exciting. He is the type of player our fans will love.”

Fabio Silva

It’s safe to say that Silva has not lived up to Shi’s words, both in terms of being compared to Neves, who is widely regarded as one of Wolves’ best-ever players, or being loved by the fans.

Earlier this year, Molineux News named Silva as Wolves’ worst signing of the Fosun era, describing him as a “failure”.

West Indies batters steady after Permaul, Warrican give them nine-wicket morning

West Indies end the rain-hit second day on 69 for 1 after bowling Sri Lanka out for 204

Rain allowed for just half a day’s play on the second day of the second and final Test in Galle, but West Indies took big strides towards squaring the series in that short time. Following a morning session that brought nine Sri Lankan wickets for just 91 runs, West Indies came up with a solid batting display after lunch, bringing the gap to 135 runs for the loss of only Jermaine Blackwood’s wicket before the rain came. Kraig Brathwaite was unbeaten on 22 off 77 deliveries, and alongside him was Nkrumah Bonner on 1.In an, albeit brief, afternoon session largely devoid of any genuinely pulse-racing action, it was only Blackwood’s dismissal – and his subsequent poorly judged review for an lbw off a Praveen Jayawickrama arm ball – as well as an unsuccessful review from the hosts a short while later against Brathwaite, that brought momentary excitement. This was largely down to the fact that neither Blackwood nor Brathwaite were compelled to take any undue risks, and, as a result, neither was really tested. Both looked relatively at ease throughout their stay – whether moving deep into the crease to counter the turn late or planting a big front foot to get to the pitch – but notably steered clear of the sweeps and sauntering down the pitch that had been a hallmark of the Sri Lankan innings earlier. This meant that they were content to wait for the bad balls – primarily ones pitched too short – to score boundaries, though it was really only Blackwood that showed any semblance of positive intent in that regard. His 99-ball 44 came with five fours. The Sri Lankan spinners, for their part, struggled to get the same purchase off the pitch that the likes of Jomel Warrican and Veerasammy Permaul, who finished with career-best figures of 5 for 35, had extracted so effortlessly earlier in the day. Indeed, perhaps buoyed by what they had seen in the morning, the Sri Lankan spinners were arguably a little too eager. On several occasions, they strayed too full, while on others they erred on the shorter side. On the occasions that they did find their lengths, the West Indian batters were coaxed into false strokes, which in the end brought about Blackwood’s wicket. The general pared back nature of that session was in stark contrast to the morning session, when Warrican and Permaul had run riot. They were adroit with their lines and lengths, and Warrican in particular varied his pace and trajectory well to prevent the batters from settling down. Permaul was the epitome of discipline, with probing, consistent lines – mixed in with the odd arm ball – that would have done even the finest exponents of left-arm spin proud. After some brief early resistance from the batters, Warrican was rewarded when he induced Oshada Fernando into edging a cut to Joshua Da Silva behind the stumps. Oshada’s overnight partner, Pathum Nissanka, was the next to go, trapped plumb in front courtesy a Permaul arm ball. There was no partnership of note after that, as Warrican and Permaul ran through the line-up, picking up a wicket nearly every other over – though Charith Asalanka’s reverse sweep to score his first runs in Test cricket will certainly be remembered fondly. To compound matters for Sri Lanka, Angelo Mathews was forced to retire hurt, with what has now been confirmed as a thigh strain. While he is almost certainly not going to bowl in this game – he was due to open the bowling alongside Sri Lanka’s only other seamer, Suranga Lakmal – he showed that he could be called upon with the bat if needed. He returned to the crease towards the end of the innings, and proceeded to launch some big blows to take Sri Lanka beyond the 200 mark, before receiving an absolute ripper from Warrican that zipped past his forward defence to knock back middle stump and bring the innings to an end.

Dravid: 'It's been great to see the younger guys come through'

India may have just swept the T20 World Cup runners-up 3-0 in his first series as full-time head coach, but Rahul Dravid wants to take a “realistic” view of where the team stands. He is mindful, in particular, of New Zealand’s hectic schedule: they began this T20I series just three days after their World Cup final defeat in Dubai, while missing their captain Kane Williamson.

“We have to keep our feet on the ground and be realistic, especially with bigger things down the line in the next 12 months,” Dravid told host broadcaster Star Sports after the third T20I in Kolkata. “It’s not easy for New Zealand to play a World Cup final, turn up three days later, and play three games in six days. We knew it was never going to be easy on them.”While New Zealand were without Williamson through the series and rested stand-in captain Tim Southee for the last match, India, too, missed key personnel, with Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja rested. Dravid said the big positive from the series win was the performance of the players who got chances in the absence of the seniors.Harshal Patel was one of the finds of the series, taking four wickets in two games and contributing a lower-order cameo in Kolkata•Getty Images

Harshal Patel picked up four wickets in two games while returning an economy rate of 7.28, and also contributed a useful lower-order cameo in Kolkata. Axar Patel, standing in for Jadeja, played all three games and ended the series with a Player-of-the-Match-winning three-wicket haul in the final T20I. There were promising displays from the debutant allrounder Venkatesh Iyer and the back-up opener and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan as well.”It’s been great to see the younger guys come through, we’ve given opportunity to some of the guys who haven’t played too much cricket in the last few months with the seniors taking rest,” Dravid said. “The greatest takeaway for us is to see the skills available to us. We need to continue developing those skills.”Related

Dravid said that with player workloads in focus over a packed upcoming 12 months, India are likely to continue resting key players across the year and giving new players regular game time. That thought process was in full view in Kolkata, where KL Rahul and R Ashwin – two players who are set to feature in the upcoming Test series – were rested after victory was secured in Ranchi.”It’s really nice that we have options,” Dravid said. “We can mix and match. Its going to be a long season, lots of games to be played till the next World Cup and we need to do that [rest and rotate] with some of our players and be realistic about how much cricket needs to be played.”

Lizelle Lee's unbeaten 91 puts South Africa 1-0 up

Opening batter Lizelle Lee continued her fine run of form with an unbeaten 91 to help South Africa cruise to a comfortable eight-wicket win with more than 10 overs to spare against West Indies in the opening women’s ODI in Coolidge.Chasing 154 for victory, Lee and Laura Wolvaardt (36 off 65 balls) put on an 88-run opening partnership to put South Africa on course. Even though West Indies picked up two wickets in the space of nine balls, Lee and captain Dane van Niekerk (17* off 40 balls) managed the rest of the chase expertly with an unbeaten 68-run stand for the third wicket. Lee hit 10 fours and a six en route to her 91, which marked her 21st ODI half-century. She had come into the ODIs on the back of a strong T20I series in which she scored 114 runs in three matches.A disciplined bowling performance from the outset from South Africa’s bowlers set the tone for the match. South Africa picked up two wickets in the first 10 overs and conceded just 12 runs before Deandra Dottin and Britney Cooper salvaged the innings with a 58-run partnership. After Dottin was dismissed for a quickfire 38, off 36 balls, West Indies were unable to put together substantial partnerships. Wicketkeeper Kycia Knight top-scored for the hosts with a patient 39. Three bowlers – Ayabonga Khaka, van Niekerk and Tumi Sekhukhune – picked up two wickets apiece to help bowl West Indies out for 153 in the 47th over.”It was really hot today and a little bit difficult and you had to dig deep,” Dottin said after the match. “We didn’t play our best today with our batting. I just think that the top order, at least one should have batted through, we were short of partnerships as well. We need to go back to the drawing board and come up with ways to score 200 which I know we have the ability to do.”

Paul Stirling replaces injured Devon Conway at Southern Brave

Paul Stirling, the Ireland batter, will replace New Zealand’s Devon Conway at Southern Brave, and the availability of Wahab Riaz, the Pakistan quick, for the Trent Rockets means their South African recruit Marchant de Lange will leave the men’s Hundred after four matches and return to Somerset for their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign.Conway, also a Somerset man and one of the more prominent newcomers at the international stage, had a steady run with Brave in the Hundred, getting starts on each occasion. He had scores of 18, 23, 34 and 22 for a tally of 97 runs, scored at a strike rate of 112.79. But in that last game, against London Spirit at Lord’s, Conway took a blow from a Blake Cullen delivery in the fingers of his left hand very early in his innings, and while he finished his innings, he didn’t come out to field.Stirling, the veteran batter, wasn’t at his best when he turned out for Ireland during South Africa’s visit in July for a set of ODIs and T20Is, but brings with him a wealth of experience. Not to forget the exceptional form he was in earlier this year in Abu Dhabi, when he scored ODI centuries against UAE and Afghanistan.de Lange, meanwhile, was one of the bowling stars of the competition, the joint-leading wicket-taker after the first 17 matches with eight wickets, the same as Northern Superchargers’ Adil Rashid and the Rockets’ Rashid Khan. But the Rockets will welcome back their original pick, Riaz, whose participation in the Hundred had been delayed after he reached the UK because of an issue with his visa – he didn’t have a valid work permit – which forced him to fly home, sort it out, and then return to link up with his team. He has completed his mandatory quarantine on his return to the UK, and is available for the Rockets’ next fixture, against Welsh Fire on Friday in Cardiff. The Rockets have had the better time of it at the tournament so far, three wins in four outings giving them a top-of-the-table spot with six points, while Brave are in the other half of the eight-team table, down at seventh place with four points from four games, only above Spirit.

Warwickshire look set to pull off something of a coup in signing Che Simmons, a young fast bowler who has been dubbed the “new Jofra Archer”.Simmons, a 17-year-old seamer, was born and raised in Barbados. But he also holds a UK passport through his father and, having been recommended to Warwickshire’s director of sport, Paul Farbrace, by fellow Barbadian Ottis Gibson, was invited to play a few games for Warwickshire’s 2nd XI as a trialist.Having made an excellent impression, Simmons is expected to be offered a deal which might well include some type of scholarship in order that he can complete his education in the UK. He currently attends Combermere School, which has a rich history of producing top players. As well has current West Indies Test captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, Wes Hall, Clyde Walcott, Frank Worrall and Chris Jordan also attended the school. So did the singer, Rihanna.A fast bowler with a beautiful smooth run-up and action, Simmons has represented Barbados Under-15s and came to prominence by claiming all 10 wickets in an innings while playing for the Franklyn Stephenson Academy. He finished with the remarkable figures of 10 for 16 from 5.3 overs. Only two of the runs he conceded came off the bat. While good news for Warwickshire and, potentially, England, it might be seen as another setback for cricket in the Caribbean. While Archer and Jordan are the most high-profile cricketers to have opted for England ahead of Barbados in recent years, Warwickshire have another young Barbadian in Jacob Bethell on their staff. Some at Warwickshire believe Bethell, a left-arm spinner and batter, is the best young player the club has had since the emergence of Ian Bell.
