Although the ground hosted two Test matches in the Australian winters of 2003 and 2004, this is the first Shield game in the stadium’s history, and the opening day ended with South Australia on 8 for 328, with Alex Carey on 39 and Chadd Sayers on 3.Queensland legspinner Mitch Swepson achieved the first five-wicket haul of his first-class career and finished with 5 for 106. He bowled Callum Ferguson for 45 and fellow spinner Charlie Hemphrey had opener John Dalton caught for 53 to have the Redbacks at 3 for 114, after opener Jake Weatherald had departed in the fourth over of the game. But a 136-run partnership between Head and Jake Lehmann steadied South Australia, and Head brought up his century from his 130th delivery. However, next ball Lehmann fell for 43 when he was bowled shouldering arms to Marnus Labuschagne, and Tom Cooper was lbw to Swepson for a duck in the next over.Swepson later had Head lbw and then claimed the lower-order wickets of Joe Mennie and Adam Zampa late in the day. Queensland entered the match second on the Shield table, while South Australia sit in fourth position.

Tottenham: Fabrizio Romano Shares Schuurs To Spurs Update

Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared his own update on Tottenham Hotspur and their links to Torino defender Perr Schuurs.

Who will Spurs sign next?

The biggest news of the week, and by a large distance, is surrounding star striker Harry Kane.

It has been reliably reported today that Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy have accepted Bayern Munich's latest bid for the 30-year-old superstar, with both clubs reaching an agreement on a package worth over €100 million (£86m).

If all goes to plan, the north Londoners could soon be set for a huge financial windfall, but the loss of Kane could prove an insurmountable task for manager Ange Postecoglou to overcome.

Kane's transfer to Bayern Munich would come as the most headline-grabbing transfer story of the summer, with all eyes then turning to Tottenham and how they utilise those extra funds from their huge sale.

Postecoglou, speaking to the press recently, explained that Spurs may well sign another central defender after completing a deal for Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven.

However, this will largely depend on outgoings. When asked about another centre-back signing, Postecoglou said: "We've to see what happens with outgoings, but the potential is there to bring in one more centre back after van de Ven."

Schuurs, according to recent reports, could well be that player as The Times reported this week that they're planning to bring in the 23-year-old – if they generate enough cash through player sales.

Romano, sharing his own update on social media, has backed those reports of Tottenham's interest in the Dutchman who could well join van de Ven in north London.

However, the journalist expands further by saying he is just one of the names on Spurs' transfer shortlist, with Lilywhites chiefs holding internal talks over signing Schuurs.

"Torino's CB Perr Schuurs remains one of the options in the list being discussed internally," wrote Romano on X.

"Player keen on PL move."

How good is Perr Schuurs?

The young centre-half, who has won titles with Ajax in the Eredivisie, could be a fine option for Spurs to reinforce their defence – especially considering he could be available for just £26 million.

perr-schuurs

As per WhoScored, Schuurs was a mainstay for Torino under manager Ivan Juric last season, racking up 30 Serie A appearances whilst even managing two assists.

The colossal 6 foot 3 defender also boasts some pretty impressive defensive stats from the 2022/2023 campaign, having made more successful tackles and clearances per 90 than any other Torino player (WhoScored).

Journalist Josh Bunting, commenting on the player's performance against Empoli in late 2022, was effusive in his praise for Schuurs – calling him a "mountain" at the back for Juric.

He wrote on X.

"First Empoli goal in Serie A for Mattia Destro as they lead at Torino. Stunning goal, the touch and the bicycle finish superb however the cross from Tyronne Ebuehi was so well weighted. Should give Destro the confidence to kick on in his season. Perr Schuurs a mountain for Torino."

It will be interesting to see if Spurs back Postecoglou by signing another solid defender this summer.

Aston Villa Ready To Submit Bid For "Magic" £42m Forward

Aston Villa are ready to make an offer to bring Juventus forward Federico Chiesa to the Premier League, according to fresh reports.

Is Federico Chiesa leaving Juventus?

The Italy international, who is naturally a left-winger, still has another two years to run on his contract with the Serie A outfit, but having been handed just six starts in league competition last season, he’s fallen significantly out of favour under Massimiliano Allegri at the Allianz Stadium.

As a result, Calciomercato have reported that the Turin giants are keen to sell the 25-year-old before the end of the ongoing window, and should he indeed look to seal a departure, he won’t be short of potential suitors with three clubs in the top-flight having already been linked with a swoop.

Italian newspaper Tuttosport previously claimed that NSWE, Monchi and Unai Emery are, as it stands, the most interested hierarchy in the experienced attacker despite rival interest from Liverpool and Newcastle United, and the following update would suggest that is very much still the case heading into the final few weeks of the summer.

Are Aston Villa signing Federico Chiesa?

According to Tuttosport once again (via Sport Witness), both Aston Villa and the Magpies are “ready to put €50m [£42m] plus bonuses on the table” to sign Chiesa ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Premier League “sirens” are going off and it’s claimed that the forward has rejected big-money offers from Saudi Arabia to explore his options elsewhere, likely in England.

Juventus appear to have since had a change of heart regarding his future though as it’s stated that they are planning to offer him a new deal, but it’s “not clear” whether their stance could alter for a second time should an irresistible offer arrive at their door.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

In the Serie A last season, Chiesa posted seven goal contributions (five assists and two goals) in 21 appearances, which shows just how much of a positive and instant impact he made despite receiving limited minutes, so should he put pen to paper, the winger would be an extremely exciting acquisition for Aston Villa.

The Genoa native, who’s sponsored by Nike, also averaged 4.34 shot-creating actions per league match which was the third-highest total throughout the whole of his squad, via FBRef, highlighting his constant desire to produce chances for himself and his fellow teammates in the final third.

Juventus’ “magic” dynamo, as dubbed by members of the media, is additionally a versatile operator having been deployed in seven various positions across the pitch since the start of his career, including everywhere across the frontline and even three roles in the midfield, so he’d be a useful option for Emery to have at his disposal.

Furthermore, Chiesa knows what it takes to compete and be successful at the highest level with four pieces of silverware to his name, so he would be able to match the positive, winning mentality of the squad who are already getting to work in the Midlands.

McKay's conquers sickness as career-best sees off Worcs

Clint McKay returned the best ever figures by a Leicestershire bowler in domestic T20 as they secured a five-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids at New Road

ScorecardFile photo – Clint McKay claimed his best T20 figures•Getty Images and Cricket AustraliaClint McKay returned the best ever figures by a Leicestershire bowler in domestic T20 as they secured a five-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids at New Road. The Australian finished with 5-11 from his four overs, surpassing the 5-13 by Andrew McDonald versus Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2010. It was also McKay’s personal best in the short format of the game as the Rapids were restricted to 148 for 8.McKay said: “The funny thing about it is I’ve actually been feeling quite sick all day so I wasn’t particularly looking forward to playing tonight. But it was the same as usual, the same preparation, and I try and bowl the best ball everytime. Tonight I was very lucky and other days you bowl nicely and it doesn’t quite work out for you.”Colin Ackerman’s unbeaten 47 off 36 balls then enabled Leicestershire to overcome a mid-innings wobble as they reached their target with nine balls to spare.Leicestershire have now triumphed in their opening two games in a competition they have won three times whilst the Rapids have slumped to back-to-back defeats – both at New Road.Worcestershire opted to bat first on the same pitch as used for the previous T20 Blast game against Birmingham Bears but lost two wickets inside the opening two overs from McKay. Joe Clarke, who was again promoted to open, attempted a cut and was caught at first slip and then Brett D’Oliveira nicked through to keeper Luke Ronchi.Ben Cox, who hit a career best 124 in the County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham this week, again looked in good form and struck three fours and a six in Gavin Griffiths second over. Cox and Daryl Mitchell added 56 in seven overs and in the process the latter became Worcestershire’s highest ever run-scorer in T20 cricket, surpassing the 1,890 total of Moeen Ali.But on 31, Mitchell swept Cameron Delport into the hands of short fine leg and skipper Joe Leach failed to trouble the scorers before being yorked by Griffiths.Cox went to his half century off 35 balls with five fours and a six but lofted the next delivery from Callum Parkinson straight to long-on.McKay returned to the firing line and struck twice in two balls with Ross Whiteley holing out to long off and Mitchell Santner pouched on the midwicket boundary. The 34-year-old completed his haul in the final over as Ed Barnard also fell in the deep. When Leicestershire replied, New Zealand keeper Ronchi showed immediate aggressive intent as he struck the first three deliveries of the innings from Leach for boundaries. Australian allrounder John Hastings suffered the same treatment in his first over, this time from Delport.Black Caps spinner Santner broke the stand on 41 by bowling Delport and the first ball from Mitchell accounted for Ronchi in the same manner at 61 for 2 in the seventh over.D’Oliveira’s introduction into the attack bore instant reward with Foxes skipper Mark Cosgrove and Ned Eckersley falling at long-on and cover respectively. There was still work to do for the visitors when Lewis Hill was stumped to give Santner a second success and 40 were required from the final five overs. But Ackerman and Tom Wells (31 not out) ensured there were no more alarms for Leicestershire.

Classy Chase leads West Indies rally

An unbeaten 132-run stand for the seventh wicket between Roston Chase (131) and Jason Holder (58) helped West Indies end day one on 286 for 6

The Report by Danyal Rasool30-Apr-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:07

Roston Chase, the Caribbean’s Crisis Man

A day that started with ominous familiarity for the West Indies ended in unexpected success as the hosts recovered from a middle order meltdown to post 286 for 6 at stumps. Roston Chase was primarily responsible for the turnaround, an unbeaten 131 – just his second century – dominating the day, while Jason Holder’s unbeaten fifty helped run Pakistan ragged in a final session off which they scored 120.Chase’s awareness around the crease was excellent, knowing exactly when to leave the ball. He was equally effective at adjusting his feet when facing the spinners, and was in position to take advantage when they dropped the ball either short or bowled full. The stroke that brought up his century was a fitting snapshot of how he had played: a delightful cover drive off an overpitched delivery from legpinner Shadab Khan, who had a particularly harsh introduction to the longest format. In the absence of Yasir Shah for most parts of the final session, he was summoned but failed to ring in any sort of consistency. The evening session began, somewhat familiarly, with Holder joining Chase to play his part in yet another rearguard. With the West Indies top and middle order disappointing so regularly, Holder’s runs in the lower order have become essential to his side, rather than just an added bonus. To his credit, he delivers more often than not, and he gave Chase stellar support. With Yasir clearly hampered by a back niggle and unable to bowl at full tilt, Pakistan were at times reduced to being a three-man attack. Chase and Holder were wise to the situation, ensuring they didn’t give a wicket away easily and waited for the bowlers to tire. As they did, their intensity invariably dropped and for the first time all day, Pakistan looked like they were waiting for a wicket to fall instead of actively hunting for one.West Indies had perhaps expected an easier ride after winning the toss and choosing to bat in favourable conditions, but a splendid new ball spell from both Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Abbas put them on the back foot straightaway. The wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite, when it came, had a sense of inevitability to it, the right-hander edging an Amir delivery that held its line. When Shimron Hetmyer fell flashing at a ball outside off stump soon after, the lack of experience was telling. With the pitch seen as conducive to spin bowling, Misbah-ul-Haq turned to Yasir as early as the eleventh over. There was sharp turn on offer for the legspinner right away, hardly a ringing endorsement of the wicket, what with this being the first morning of the Test. But with the under-fire Shai Hope having gone into his shell, Yasir pitched one on a length around middle stump. Hope failed to get on the front foot in time, and the ball took the edge through to Sarfraz Ahmed as West Indies slumped to 37 for 3.Amir provided Pakistan the next breakthrough, ripping a yorker into Powell’s toes that tailed in at serious pace, taking the slow pitch out of the equation. The umpire turned down the appeal, but Amir was sure, and Hawk-Eye agreed with him. Wickets continued to fall as West Indies threatened to fold for a sub-200 total, as the hosts were reduced to 154 for 6. The players went in for tea soon after; the fans will probably have needed something stronger. What they couldn’t have known was Chase and Holder would concoct the perfect tonic to soothe their disappointment in the final session, as the West Indies improbably finished the day on even terms. With the partnership standing at 132, and still unbeaten, the fans had better turn up tomorrow, too. They certainly haven’t seen this before.

'New ICC finance model arbitrary, not agreeable'

The ICC’s new constitution will “convert” the nature of the world governing body and “adversely affect” the autonomy of its members, according to the BCCI, one of the strongest opponents of the proposed document. In a comprehensive communication of its preliminary observations on the proposed ICC constitution, the BCCI said the changes were “vague” and “unclear”. The BCCI expanded on its specific reservations and also provided suggestions on various aspects, including the powers of the ICC chairman, membership criteria, the make-up of the board of directors and, in greatest detail, the proposed new financial model.”The proposed ICC constitution seeks to convert the ICC from a members’ organisation to a supra-national regulator,” Rahul Johri, the BCCI CEO wrote in the email, sent on Sunday evening to Iain Higgins, the ICC chief operating officer. “This is a fundamental change in the nature of the ICC that adversely affects the autonomy of its members.”Further, several of the proposed changes are vague and unclear in their purport and intended operation. Given that one of the stated objectives behind the proposed changes is to bring in clarity and transparency, it is imperative that there is complete clarity on all the proposed changes so that members can properly understand the same before formulating their position thereon.”In his email, a copy of which has been seen by ESPNcricinfo, Johri laid out the BCCI’s key observations, which include taking away the vote of the ICC chairman at the board of directors’ table (previously used as a tie-breaker), making the membership committee independent and external to the ICC, and reducing the Associate presence on the board from three to one, and including a non-voting former player.Though these are significant, it is the BCCI’s objections to the new financial model that are of most pressing interest. The BCCI called the new model, to replace one put in place by the Big 3 in 2014, “arbitrary” and not “agreeable”.The objections were essentially an expansion on the arguments first presented by Vikram Limaye at the ICC board meeting in February, when the new constitution was adopted in principle. Limaye, a member of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) overseeing BCCI operations currently, was the board’s representative at the February meeting and said the BCCI could not accept the financial model because it was not backed by a scientific formula. In the new financial model, the BCCI takes the biggest revenue cut among all the boards from the Big Three model. The ICC said it was built on the basis of good faith and equity, but the BCCI said in its communication that any new model would need to be backed by “accepted and articulated principles” of finance, and importantly take into account the Indian board’s contribution to the ICC revenues.”The ICC is seeking to change the existing financial model without having any scientific formula or technical analysis behind the proposed changes. It is a fundamental attribute of any resource allocation system to first collect information and then allocate resources based on the information, priorities and a defined methodology following appropriate principles. The move to propose changes to the existing financial model without carrying out the aforesaid exercise is an arbitrary one.”Under the Big Three model, Full Members received a contribution cost for participating in the ICC events. The percentages were calculated based on the “contribution” of each Full Member to ICC revenues, though the real formula behind the numbers was never revealed. In the new model, as revealed by ESPNcricinfo, the contribution costs was removed and instead a set figure was allocated to each of the 10 Full Members along with two Associates – Ireland and Afghanistan. The ICC publicly said there was no real calculation behind each figure. But Limaye in February, and Johri now, pointed out that the ICC could not repeat the same mistake twice. “Since no methodology has been articulated in support of the proposed new financial model, we are unable to evaluate the same on any recognised and/or accepted parameters,” Johri wrote. “Any discussion on the proposed new financial model has to be based on clearly articulated and acceptable principles which recognise the relative contribution of BCCI to the revenues of the ICC. For the above reasons, we are not agreeable to the proposed new financial model.”The BCCI went on to question the accounting procedure on which financial models had been based, concerns reported by ESPNcricinfo in February. One of the main issues was the ICC’s costs for it events, which had in the 2014 model been fixed but had, in reality, increased and eaten into the revenues handed to members.”The version of the 2014 model that supposedly reflects the reality (“Revised 2014 Model”) is actually a different model altogether and does not present an accurate and comparable picture to members relative to the existing financial model,” Johri said in the email.”As per the Revised 2014 Model, the Event Cost/Expenses has been increased to USD 610 million despite the gross revenue remaining at USD 2.5 billion as envisaged under the existing financial model. There is no explanation for this increase in Event Cost/Expenses. We need to understand why this increase in Event Cost/ Expenses has taken place.”The new financial model, along with an amended draft constitution and governance structure, was accepted in principle by the ICC Board during the meeting in February. Seven Full Members voted in favour of the changes which were drafted by a five-member steering committee led by former ICC chairman Shashank Manohar. The BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket were the only boards to vote against those resolutions while Zimbabwe Cricket abstained. Members were invited to send their observations on the proposals and the matter will be taken up at the next meetings in April. But the absence of Manohar, a driving force behind the new constitution, will have an impact on how those meetings go. Manohar resigned abruptly from his post last week, citing “personal reasons”. He had met the CoA the evening before his resignation and discussed the financial models with them.

Liverpool Ready To Splash Cash On £34.2m-Rated Youngster

Liverpool could soon add another midfielder to their ranks, with AS in Spain, via Paisley Gates, reporting that the Reds are prepared to trigger the release clause of Gabri Veiga this summer.

Are Liverpool going to sign Gabri Veiga?

The 21-year-old midfielder currently features for Celta Vigo and had only played a smattering of times for the Spanish side before the 2022/23 season. In fact, since being handed his La Liga debut in 2020/21, he had only managed 13 appearances in two campaigns for the club before the beginning of 2022/23.

However, having been trusted on a more frequent basis by his club this term, he has paid them back handsomely. Featuring 36 times this year, he has managed eleven goals and four assists along the way.

Even more impressive is how he ranks when compared to some of the more experienced midfielders in the Men's 'Top Five' big leagues in Europe. Despite some of the names he is going up against, his stats are incredible for a player still in the infancy of his career. His 0.43 non-penalty goals per 90 rate for example puts him in the top one percent in that area and his 2.67 progressive carries per 90 also has him in the 88th percentile in that area too.

Gabri Veiga Celta Vigo

Veiga then looks like the real deal – and that is why there now appears to be plenty of clubs willing to sign him. According to a report from Spanish newspaper AS, via Paisley Gates, Liverpool are not only interested, but FSG and Jorg Schmadtke are actually ready and willing to pay his release clause. The player has also been assured by Celta's president that they will sanction an exit if the fee is met.

What is Gabri Veiga's release clause?

That fee stands at 40 million Euros (or £34.2m), which is more than affordable for the Reds. However, they will face Premier League competition from the likes of Newcastle and Chelsea, who are also named as willing to stump up the cash in the report.

Veiga is seen as a really impressive player already by those in the game, with football talent scout Jacek Kulig calling him a "quality box-to-box midfielder" and adding that he has been a "revelation" over the course of the 2022/23 season.

It bodes well for Liverpool, who need reinforcements in the centre of the field. If Schmadtke and Co manage to snap him up then, it could see them land a really exciting prospect who could instantly improve their team.

Liverpool Considering Swoop For £400,000-Rated Defender

Liverpool could be set to add some more exciting young talent to their ranks this summer, with Calciomercato in Italy reporting that Patrick Dorgu is on the club's wanted list.

Who is Patrick Dorgu?

The 18-year-old has yet to make a first-team appearance over the course of his career but has still stood out because of his showings in the reserves. He currently plays for Lecce's Under-19 side and managed 33 outings in the Primavera 1 over the course of the 2022/23 season. It amounted to a solid return of four goals along the way for the left-back.

Prior to his Italy move, he played in his home country of Denmark for FCN Youth and then Nordsjaelland's Under-19 side. He's also been given gametime with his national side's youth teams, playing for their Under-19 and Under-18 sides as well. With the former of the two, he has a healthy return of two goals in five games.

In spite of all this though, Dorgu is yet to break into the first-team picture at any of his clubs and has had to made do with reserve team football.

However, he hasn't needed senior minutes to catch the eye of Liverpool. The Reds have been watching the player on a handful of occasions according to Calciomercato, and Jurgen Klopp's side are now ready to make a move.

How much is Dorgu worth?

It's unclear just how much Lecce would demand for Dorgu if a deal was to go ahead and there is no fee currently mentioned in regards to a move from Liverpool. Transfermarkt suggest that his value could be around £400,000, which would be a decent sum for the Italians to generate from a player who has yet to feature in their first-team. It would though, be mere pocket change to a Premier League outfit such as the Reds.

He should, perhaps, rake in slightly more though considering his perceived potential. Danish Scout on Twitter for example shared a clip of the left-back driving through the opposition and tucking home a smart finish, and stated that he is an "extremely dynamic" player and is the "star" of that Lecce reserve side.

It appears as though he has some real talent then and if Liverpool can bring him to England, then they could have a future starter on their hands – although he would likely have to make do with more reserve team action in the interim for the Reds.

Spurs Eyeing Swoop For £22m ‘Lion’ This Summer

Tottenham Hotspur are considering a swoop for Galatasaray centre-back Victor Nelsson this summer, with the north London club desperate for some defensive reinforcement.

For the first time since 2009/10, the Lilywhites have failed to reach European competition and will now need to work diligently on the transfer front to ensure that the seasonal misfortune is not replicated next term.

The somewhat shrewd appointment of Ange Postecoglou from Celtic has installed cautious optimism that a grounded coach with an eye-catching philosophy can dispel the malaise.

And his first order of business could be to swoop for Nelsson and provide the Premier League with its latest hot prospect, according to Turkish newspaper Takvim, with the Danish ace's contract containing a €25m (£22m) release clause.

Previous reports have linked Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Serie A giants Napoli and AC Milan to a transfer, while a recent report from Fanatik claims Arsenal could yet swoop, which only emphasises the need to strike swiftly in order to tie up a deal.

Should Tottenham sign Victor Nelsson?

Postecoglou will have his work cut out this summer, but this burgeoning defender could create a foundation from which more prosperous fortunes can be gleaned.

The 24-year-old played 33 times in the Turkish Super Lig this season as Galatasaray revelled in title-winning glory, with Sofascore recording his average match rating at a solid 6.95 as he completed 86% of his passes, averaged one interception, 3.3 clearances per game and succeeded with 65% of his aerial duels.

The ten-cap Denmark international has left the likes of Jacek Kulig waxing lyrical, with the talent scout saying: "Nelsson is a great mix of a pure defender and ball-playing centre-back. He can also play as a defensive midfielder.

"Great defensive skills combined with really good ball skills. The future leader of the Danish defence. Another pearl produced by FC Nordsjælland."

Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.

Given Postecoglou's preference to implement a fast-paced and possession-centric system, with centre-halfs expected to be comfortable on the ball, this could set Nelsson up nicely to cement a starting berth in the Lilywhites' team, potentially displacing Eric Dier in the process.

Dier has made 361 appearances for Spurs since signing from Sporting Lisbon for a bargain £4m in 2014 and has been a dynamic presence in north London, though he has been culpable for lacklustre performances this year. One such performance against Bournemouth attracted vast criticism after his poor clearance led to a Cherries goal.

The 49-cap England international matches up to Nelsson's skill set, completing 86% of his passes in the top flight this term, averaging 1.1 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game, also winning 70% of his aerial duels.

Described as a "Danish lion" by Resit Omer Kukner, one of Cimbom's board members, Nelsson is on the cusp of prominence and will be hoping to earn a move to the Premier League this summer to take the next step in his progress, and at Tottenham, he could be provided with a starring role.
