Nick Compton on his experiences with a group of 18 amateur and professional cricketers on Mount Everest

Mount Everest is not a place you would normally associate with a game of cricket. Having now played one up there, I can see why.The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) had organised a trek from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp as a fundraiser for the PCA Benevolent Fund. Our group consisted of five professional cricketers and 12 other men and women who are connected to the sport in some way. We had included in our kit a “Kwik-cricket” set with a few bats and balls. The match we played on our last day was a great way to connect with the locals, illustrating how sport can bring together people from all lifestyles. The sherpas had been carrying our bags and had been at our service for the duration of trip. Once we entered the cricket domain, all that was forgotten. Sherpas v PCA could have been England v Australia at Lord’s.We played in what looked like a big crater. It was dusty and not dissimilar to some subcontinental wickets. The sherpas batted first and ran an impressive number of quick singles. The PCA, blaming nausea and exhaustion for our lack of running between the wickets, were relieved when Essex’s Graham Napier hit the winning boundary. It was a great way to end our trip. But first, before we even played our game of cricket on top of the world, we had to reach Base Camp. That first glimpse of Mount Everest was a bit like scoring that breakthrough hundred you wait a long time for. The colossal tower of rock and earth reaching almost 9000 metres into Nepalese air is a magical sight and one I will savour for a time to come. Even after two weeks of constant nausea, a headache that felt like a thousand bulls charging through my skull, and legs of jelly, I still would not have swapped the experience for anything. When I embarked on the journey, I never in my wildest dreams expected it to be so tough. The breathtaking views and the experience of camping for two weeks in the Himalayas, home to the three tallest mountains in the world, were at the forefront of my mind. What followed would be a great lesson in both respect and humility. We left Kathmandu in a small 17-seater aircraft that swirled high into turbulence before it dive-bombed onto the side of a small runway cut into the mountainside. Despite having left half my stomach in the plane, I began to experience real excitement. The lush green mountainside with snow-covered peaks in the distance and the cool, thin, fresh air were a welcome reprieve from smoggy London.

‘Higher up our energy levels dropped and the priority became simply getting to the next camp’ © PCA
At first we simply absorbed our surroundings, chatted to locals and got to know the rest of the group. I was also keen to learn more about photography. Napier, my tent mate, was already an enthusiast, so I badgered him most of the time – I still cannot work out why he always wanted to walk on his own! The enigmatic landscapes were a photographer’s dream. Huge, snow-covered mountains, glittering glaciers, and sinuous rivers all had me snapping away at every available opportunity in search of the one shot that would propel me to stardom. Soon my memory cards were running low, and once I realised that the mountain wasn’t going anywhere, I calmed down.As conditions worsened, the landscape turned from mountain green to something resembling the moon. The air got thinner and our steps heavier: soon I was counting each one and resting after every 50. Our focus had shifted to what mattered most, simply walking and breathing, activities one usually takes for granted. When survival mode really kicked in, I could draw parallels with the people the PCA Benevolent Fund helps. This is what some of them have to contend with on a daily basis. The Fund assists those cricketers whose careers and lives have been shattered, be it in an accident or through illness. That realisation helped propel my consciousness away from myself.Higher up, our energy levels dropped and the priority became simply getting to the next camp. The fluctuations in temperature gripped us. As soon as the sun went behind a mountain, it became incredibly cold. At around 4 pm, we would be pulling on thermals, beanies and protective gear, preparing ourselves for a long and freezing night. There were no camp-fires to huddle around; the warmth came from a cup of the local brew and some conversation with my fellow trekkers. Two of these were Adrian Morgan and Cameron King, who are the assistant groundsman and dressing-room attendant respectively, at Lord’s. Before the trek, I would have exchanged little more than a friendly “Good morning” and a look at the wicket with “Morg”. On this trip I discovered he had a keen interest in bird-watching and I suddenly found myself looking for Morg every time I saw a bird and relying on him to tell me what it was.It was only once we got above 4000 metres that the effects of the altitude really become apparent. Before the trek a doctor had explained about altitude sickness, the symptoms and warning signs. As she ended the talk with a sinister “You might not wake up”, it was hardly surprising that we got little sleep that night!

‘Five overs each and unsurprisingly very few quick singles were taken’ © PCA
Regardless of fitness and training, once you enter the realms of Base Camp, altitude sickness can catch anyone. We were all affected in some way, and morale took a knock when Cameron had to be airlifted off the mountain just a day from Base Camp. When you entrench yourself as deeply as we did in nature, you realise everyone’s equal up there. Nature has a way of bringing one back to earth. The pace of nature and its balance is something that become very apparent; you cannot escape it, nor do you want to. You needed to respect the enormity of the task and the conditions.Amid the brutality of some very serious climbs, there was time to soak up the culture. The Nepalese people display a calm and contentment that is strengthened by their deep Buddhist beliefs. We came across Buddhist monuments and places of worship, which one has to walk around to the left of to show respect to the gods. Watching Sherpas carry packs of between 50 to 80kg on their backs up enormous mountains was a very vivid image – to the point where one of our trekkers asked, “Is that heavy?” You can imagine the reply, had they only spoken English! What for us would seem a harsh way of life is normality for them. It really put our incessant moaning in context. The sight we had all been waiting for loomed ahead eventually. Everest has mysticism to it. Even at Base Camp only the peak is visible, as though to see it all you have to keep climbing. To think we were standing less than three km below the highest point in the world, looking at the route to the summit that so many had gone to, yet so many had failed to reach, was incredible. But I won’t be suggesting to Middlesex that we should be practising our six-hitting up here for the pre-season training trip!To donate to the PCA Benevolent Fund click here

To resolve the ongoing legal disputes in various courts that have caused a hold-up in the PCB election process, the prime minister of Pakistan has approved a new ten-member management committee headed by Zaka Ashraf for a period of four months*.The PCB elections for the next board chairman were due to be held on June 27, but a number of writ petitions filed by former management committee members in various high courts in the country challenging the composition of the governing board led to them being postponed indefinitely. The Balochistan High Court, without hearing the other party, issued a stay order and adjourned the hearing until July 17, causing a major stir in the functioning of PCB. The ministry for inter-provincial coordination (IPC), in its summary to the prime minister who is also the patron-in-chief of the PCB, cited that the numerous litigations which may hinder the smooth functioning of the PCB are due to the “inefficiency” of Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana, the incumbent election commissioner of the PCB.Related

Najam Sethi pulls out of race to be PCB chairman

The ministry wrote that “given the litigations, and in the wake of imminent International Cricket events & major decisions at International Council of Cricket, and to ensure seamless and efficient management at the helm of PCB, proposes the constitution of a new Management Committee for a period of four months as a measure to remove the difficulties arising out of the current scenario… Ministry is of the considered view that Rana may be removed from his position, and Mahmood Iqbal Khakwani, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan, may be appointed as new Commissioner of PCB”.The PCB’s board comprises ten members: four regional representatives, four representatives from services, and the two members nominated by the prime minister. These members will conduct a vote to determine the next chairman. Historically, it is the prime minister’s appointment to the PCB board of governors who becomes the chairman for a three-year term, and Ashraf, the overwhelming favourite at a time, was all set to become chairman. The legal issues began after Najam Sethi pulled out of the race to become the next PCB chairman. Soon after he made way for Ashraf to take over, several of Sethi’s associates, who were part of his interim set-up, went to court to file writ petitions, thus creating a legal wrangle.Sethi had been heading the interim management committee that had been running the PCB since last December, but its tenure ended on June 20. The committee had a mandate to carry out the election according to the PCB’s 2014 constitution, but the task was never completed.

Man Utd want to sell £10m-a-year star and replace him with "monster" player

Manchester United are now looking to sell a £10 million-a-year player and have already identified his replacement, according to a new report.

Man Utd receive injury boosts during international break

The Red Devils have enjoyed a rather successful international break so far, as they didn’t have many players away on international duty and have seen striker Rasmus Hojlund among the goals once again, as he helped Denmark beat Portugal 1-0 last week.

Man Utd to battle Barcelona for £20m full-back with triple Dalot's assists

United are keen on signing a new defender but face strong competition from several European clubs.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 25, 2025

United are not back in action until next Tuesday and the break has come at the right time to allow some of the injured players to return to training. Ruben Amorim had nine players out in the game against Leicester City, plus Patrick Dorgu suspended, but he could be set to receive a welcome boost.

Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo are targeting a return to the matchday squad for the game against Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Ayden Heaven is also in contention for that game at the City Ground after coming out of his protective boot. Manchester Evening News report that their chances of playing against Forest rest on how they come through training this week.

Meanwhile, winger Amad Diallo teased supporters on Monday evening that he could be available sooner than expected. The Ivory Coast international damaged his ankle ligaments in training last month, and it was suspected that he would be out until the end of the season, but Amad could be back before the campaign comes to a close.

Man Utd desperate to shift Harry Maguire's wages

As Amorim prays that he has some of his key players back for the final run-in, INEOS are looking ahead to the summer transfer window and are keen to offload several players. According to TEAMtalk, Man United are now ready to sell Maguire and replace him with Jarrad Branthwaite.

Harry Maguire

The report states that the Red Devils have been trying to move the 32-year-old on over the past two transfer windows, but due to him earning £10 million a year at Old Trafford, clubs have backed out of any potential deal.

It goes on to add that United are now ‘desperate’ to sell Maguire, as they want to get his wages off their books and bring in money which can help them sign Branthwaite, who has been dubbed a “monster” by scout/writer Jacek Kulig.

Branthwaite is high on United’s list of targets, but Everton’s valuation may make it hard for United to sign the Englishman. So, the Red Devils will hope moving Maguire on can clear some money and space to bring Branthwaite to Old Trafford.

Maguire has been a United player since August 2019, and despite the negativity towards him, he has continued to be an important player at the back. He has played 28 times in all competitions this season and has started 12 games in the Premier League under Amorim so far.

5/10 Man Utd man should never have lasted 90 minutes vs Sociedad

With the dust having settled on Thursday night’s Europa League clash away at Real Sociedad, it’s hard to know what to make of Manchester United’s display, with a largely positive performance having been somewhat overshadowed by a familiar sense of Deja vu late on.

It must be said that a far more competent United side could have already had the tie wrapped up, with the Red Devils once again coming up short in the final third, prior to Joshua Zirkzee’s opener just before the hour mark.

Zirkzee, Dalot, De Ligt

Even that sweeping, stroked effort from the Dutchman epitomised the at times casual nature of the away side’s forward play, with Ruben Amorim’s men lacking that real ruthless cutting edge even when firmly in control, as Alejandro Garnacho notably lashed two efforts into the side netting from the angle.

Predictably in this dismal season of woe, the Old Trafford outfit were made to pay for that profligacy as Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot to level proceedings. The hosts almost inflicted even more misery in the closing stages, only for Orri Oskarsson to inexplicably poke his attempt wide.

Thankfully, the scoreline remains level ahead of Thursday’s reverse fixture, albeit with Amorim left with key selection decisions to ponder…

Man Utd's worst performers vs Sociedad

While Bruno Fernandes can feel aggrieved to have been penalised for a somewhat harsh handball call that led to Oyarzabal’s equaliser, it must be said that the Portuguese playmaker was far from at his brilliant best on the night.

Not only did the 30-year-old fail to offer his usual attacking verve, after registering just a solitary key pass, but he was also caught out at times defensively, after being dribbled past on three occasions in the centre of the park.

Elsewhere, it also proved to be a frustrating outing for Fernandes’ compatriot, Diogo Dalot, with the 25-year-old full-back coming under fire for failing to pick out Rasmus Hojlund in the first half, a decision that even his manager described as “not the best”.

As for Hojlund himself, it was hard to doubt the Dane’s endeavour on this occasion as he tirelessly worked the channels, although the 22-year-old particularly faded from view as the game progressed, with the lack of a suitable alternative on the bench seemingly not helping matters.

Having failed to register 17-year-old, Chido Obi, for the competition, Hojlund will have to remain the go-to striker moving forward, albeit with Amorim certainly needing more from a player who hasn’t scored since mid-December, as he also lost the ball eight times from just 19 touches on the night.

Hojlund

In the case of the former Atalanta man, Amorim’s hands were tied in a sense due to the club’s depleted bench, yet the same cannot be said for Hojlund’s international teammate, Patrick Dorgu, with the 20-year-old perhaps fortunate not to have been withdrawn at some stage.

Patrick Dorgu's game in numbers vs Sociedad

Mixed would be the word to describe Dorgu’s start to life in Manchester.

Performance in Numbers

Subbed at half-time against Leicester City in the FA Cup, the former Lecce man then put in a lively display away at Goodison Park, with Amorim subsequently stating that the wing-back is “going to be a very good player for us now and in the future”.

Unfortunately for Dorgu, that was followed by a chaotic showing against Ipswich Town as he teed up the visitors’ opener before being dismissed just before the break, with that early red forcing him to sit out Sunday’s FA Cup tie at home to Fulham.

Having been reinstated for the trip to San Sebastian, there were signs of life from the £30m man again down the left flank as he regularly looked to get forward, albeit while having been found desperately lacking with regard to his end product.

Much like his compatriot, Hojlund, it is hard to criticise the defender’s work rate as he frequently bombed up and down the wing, although he failed to pick out a teammate with any of his three crosses, having lost the ball on 19 occasions.

That corroborates the verdict of the Daily Express’ Alex Turk, who handed the defender a 5/10 match rating, while also writing that Dorgu was ‘so often an attacking outlet for United down the left flank but wasn’t hitting the sweet spot with his crossing.’

90 minutes

52 touches

66% pass accuracy

1 key pass

0/3 crosses completed

0/1 long balls completed

0/2 successful dribbles

1 big chance created

3/8 ground duels won

1/2 aerial duels won

19x possession lost

While his tally of 52 touches was even more than influential goalscorer, Zirkzee (45), Dorgu did only record a 66% pass accuracy rate, while also struggling in a defensive sense after winning just four of his ten total duels.

There certainly remains reason to be optimistic surrounding United’s January arrival, yet perhaps Dorgu might have benefitted from being replaced when he started to tire, with teenage sensation, Harry Amass, waiting in the wings to make his ‘long overdue’ first-team debut, as per journalist George Smith.

While throwing on a 17-year-old for his first taste of senior football may have been a real gamble, it did look as if United were in need of fresher legs as Sociedad wrestled back control, having been left hanging on in the final throes of the game.

Senior options are, frankly, desperately limited at present, yet with games coming thick and fast, Amorim may need to start trusting his academy talents – like Amass – sooner rather than later.
