Breetzke getting 'comfortable' in new role at No. 4 in ODIs

Matthew Breetzke’s ODI career started solidly as he consistently scored runs from the top of the order. In this ODI series, though – his first both in India and against India – he is performing an entirely different role.Breetzke has been pushed down to No. 4 with senior players Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock and the captain Temba Bavuma forming the top three, and he’s coped well, scoring a match-winning half-century during South Africa’s chase of 359 on Wednesday.”Obviously, I’m just getting more experience now batting at four, which I’m starting to feel a little bit more comfortable in the role,” Breetzke said on the eve of the series decider in Visakhapatnam. “So that helps, and I think the more I play at number four and in this role, hopefully the better I’ll get.”Related

The two games against India provided him with two different situations to deal with as well. In Ranchi, he went in with South Africa having lost a lot of wickets and in need of recovery. In Raipur, they were chasing a bigger total but had a solid foundation.”Obviously, the first game there was a little bit of trouble that we were in, so I had to sort of build the innings and then in the second game it was about just managing the guys that were coming in.”We lost obviously Aiden [after his century] and then I had to sort of manage [Dewald] Brevis there and then just managing those guys and letting them bat around me, they’ve got the explosive power – it was just about really looking to build a partnership with them.”Breetzke also highlighted the depth and power in South Africa’s batting line-up. “I think we’ve got a nice balance in our side with a couple of guys that are just proper batters, and then you’ve got powerhouses like Brevis and [Marco] Jansen that can sort of change the game on its head.”We’ve seen [Corbin] Bosh in the last two matches play some really special innings, I think as the top four, it gives you a lot of confidence; you can take a little bit more time because, you know, they’ve got that explosive power at the back end. So for us, it’s just about setting that platform up for them to come in at the end and do their thing.”There’s a lot of confidence in the batting group at the moment, but we will have to do it again tomorrow.”

Vancouver Whitecaps and city announce plan to explore a new stadium at Hastings Park

After months of speculation about their long-term future in Vancouver, the Whitecaps appear to have found a path forward in the Canadian city. Fresh off their first MLS Cup final appearance, the club announced plans with the City of Vancouver for a new stadium. After more than a decade at BC Place, Vancouver are preparing to negotiate the construction of a purpose-built venue at Hastings Park.

Lease challenges at BC Place prompt search

Since relocating to BC Place in 2011, the Whitecaps have called the iconic stadium home, having initially played at Empire Stadium during their inaugural MLS season. However, recent lease renewal discussions hit a stalemate, with MLS commissioner Don Garber describing the current arrangement as "untenable." The uncertainty surrounding the lease had even sparked rumors that the club might be forced to leave Vancouver if a resolution was not reached, casting doubt on the team’s future in the city.

AdvertisementCity and club commit to stadium development

In a press conference at Vancouver City Hall, Whitecaps CEO and Sporting Director Axel Schuster joined Mayor Ken Sim to announce a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that commits both parties to advancing plans for a new stadium at Hastings Park. This move represents a collaborative effort to secure a permanent home for the club and reflects the city’s recognition of the Whitecaps’ growing importance to Vancouver’s sporting landscape.

“We’re grateful for the City’s partnership and look forward to working together to determine whether Hastings Park can become the location for a future home of our club,” Schuster said in a statement as per TSN. “We have a lot of work ahead of us, but this is a positive step forward, and we hope many more will follow as we work to secure a permanent home that will allow us to compete with long-term stability in Major League Soccer.”

AFPMayor highlights economic and community benefits

Mayor Sim emphasized the broader impact the new stadium could have on the city, noting that the partnership has the potential to create jobs, stimulate the local economy, and revitalize Hastings Park as a hub for sports, concerts, and community events. He expressed enthusiasm about the Whitecaps’ recent success and the opportunity to build on that momentum by providing a venue that matches the team’s ambitions and fanbase.

“After an incredible year that saw the Whitecaps reach the MLS Cup Final for the first time in club history, it’s clear just how much this team means to our city, and we’re incredibly excited to be taking the next step forward,” Sim said. “This MOU demonstrates a firm commitment by both the City and the Whitecaps to advance work towards a new stadium here in Vancouver.

“The partnership we are building today has the potential to create jobs, boost our local economy, and transform Hastings Park into an even more vibrant destination for sports, concerts, and community events.”

'I am a liar!' – Enzo Maresca questions the quality of Chelsea's strength in depth despite plaudits for ability to rotate

Enzo Maresca questioned the quality of Chelsea's bench strength after the Blues suffered a shock loss to Leeds United. It was a disjointed and error-strewn performance that saw the Blues fall 3-1 at Elland Road on Wednesday night. The defeat has reignited concerns over the club’s squad depth as the Italian guides a young squad who are still learning to navigate the Premier League’s unforgiving rhythm.

  • Maresca's experiment backfires

Maresca made five changes from the side that drew with Arsenal against Leeds. It was a rotation forced as much by necessity as design. Reece James, who delivered an immense midfield display against the Gunners, was rested to protect his fitness. The captain returned on Saturday at Bournemouth. But Chelsea was again without Moises Caicedo, who continues to serve a three-match ban following his red card in the north London derby. The Chelsea manager admitted that he regretted some of his decisions at Leeds, particularly the omission of 18-year-old Josh Acheampong, whose involvement he later suggested might have offered greater stability. Meanwhile, summer signing Tosin Adarabioyo endured a difficult evening, and Maresca did little to shield him in public, noting the centre-back did not play well. The 45-year-old sought to explain the gulf in performance between his starters and players on the fringes, saying he cannot pretend there is no hierarchy within the squad.

What did Maresca say about Chelsea squad

Speaking to reporters, ahead of the Bournemouth clash, Maresca said: "Most of the rotation we do is because the other one cannot play. But I always try to be honest with you. In football, in life, in any job, there is a level. Andrey [Santos], unfortunately, is not Moi [Caicedo]. Tosin is not Wes. They have different skills. They are different. If I say to you that Andrey is like Moi, you can understand for yourself that I am a liar. There is a level at all jobs. Like me. Plenty of managers are better than me. Some not. But there is a level at all jobs. So, for me, [this] is the reality."

Maresca later conceded that squad management has become the most challenging aspect of this campaign at Stamford Bridge. The constant churn of fixtures and the fragility of some players have left him struggling to maintain consistency.

"We are in a process where we are trying to understand and to learn why, for instance, at Leeds we were not good enough," he said. "I don’t know if the solution is to have 12 or 14 players and the rest just play some minutes. But we are trying to understand. If today you play every three days, two days like now with the same 11, I don’t know [if it’s possible].

"I would like to play Reece [James] every game. He is much better. He is already playing two games a week; he needs to aim for three games a week. So he is already improving in that. But I also would like Moi not to be suspended or Wes every game. For sure, we need Reece for the next games."

Asked whether Fofana could soon cope with the intensity of three fixtures a week, Maresca was blunt: "It’s too early. He’s doing well one game per week. Hopefully, he can play two games per week. What we don’t want with Wes is another four, five, six months out."

  • Leeds punished a passive Chelsea performance

Leeds entered the evening in the relegation zone but played with the hunger and cohesion that Chelsea lacked. Maresca’s players appeared passive and mostly came out second best during duels and half-balls.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Maresca did not sugar-coat his assessment. He said: "A very poor night, they [Leeds] deserved to win the game, they were better in all aspects. [We will] Just try to analyse and learn from this game and focus on the next one. It's not about possession; in possession, you need a purpose. Today, they were better in all aspects. Congratulations to them. After the goal we scored, we had one or two clear chances, but the third goal killed the game completely, then it's much more difficult. It's reality, it's Premier League, you need to perform every game, no matter if you are at home or away or who the other team is. It's important to see where we are going to be in February or March, but most important is to understand what we did bad tonight and then try to improve."

    What comes next?

Chelsea will hope to regain momentum when they travel to Bournemouth on Saturday. The Cherries have lost four of their past five matches, presenting an opening for Maresca’s side to steady themselves after a turbulent week. Arsenal lost to Aston Villa, and that allows the Blues to reduce the gap with the leaders if they manage to emerge triumphant at the Vitality Stadium.

Ichiro Suzuki Sends Message to Hall of Fame Voter Who Snubbed Him

Ichiro Suzuki became the first Japanese-born player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, and he has given up on trying to make up with the one voter who snubbed him.

When Ichiro was elected to the Hall in January, he missed unanimous induction by one vote. Yes, somehow a single voter didn't think one of the greatest hitters of all-time deserved to reach Cooperstown on the first ballot. There was immediate outrage when that happened.

A few days after his selection went public, Ichiro offered to meet with the voter who didn't pick him and have a drink. That won't happen now.

During his Hall of Fame induction speech on Sunday, Ichiro announced that his offer to meet with that writer has expired, and he has no interest in doing so.

Whoever that voter was had plenty of time to make themselves known and meet with Ichiro. They opted not to.

Ichiro was a 10-time MLB All-Star who won 10 Gold Gloves, three Silver Sluggers, two batting titles and was named AL MVP and Rookie of the Year in 2001. He holds the MLB single-season record for hits (262), and ranks 24th on the league's all-time hits list (3,089). The crazy part about those numbers is that he didn't debut in the major leagues until he was 27 years old after already becoming a star in Japan.

It truly is incredible that anyone would leave him of their Hall of Fame ballot.

Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge Earn Automatic Bids to 2025 All-Star Game

Shortly after Shohei Ohtani crushed his 28th home run of the season on Thursday, MLB announced that the Los Angeles Dodgers star will be the starting designated hitter at next month's All-Star Game. Not surprisingly, Ohtani earned an automatic bid for receiving the most votes in the National League.

For the American League, New York Yankees' Aaron Judge earned the most votes in MLB and also received an automatic bid to start at outfield.

Last week, the league announced which players had received the most votes per position in each league, and Judge had the most votes overall and the most in the AL, while Ohtani had the most votes in the NL and the second-most votes overall.

This is Ohtani's fifth consecutive All-Star bid. This is Judge's seventh overall All-Star bid, and he's started in six of those appearances.

Phase 1 of All-Star voting ended on Thursday as the finalists for each position will be named that night. From there, the top two vote-getters in each position, as well as the top six outfielders, will move on for Phase 2 voting, which closes Wednesday, July 2. The winners of each position will be named that night. More explanation on All-Star voting can be read here.

The 2025 All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Titans bank heavily on new Gill-Buttler opening act

Siraj, Rabada and Prasidh Krishna form a new and possibly potent pace attack at Gujarat Titans

Chopra, Harbhajan back Gill to star for ‘strong’ GT

Where they finished last year

Gujarat Titans, after winning the IPL and reaching the final in their first two years, failed to make the playoffs for the first time in 2024. They finished eighth in the league, with five wins, seven defeats and two washouts in their last two matches.

What’s new in IPL 2025?

After the rebuild at the mega auction, Titans have a brand new pace attack spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj (INR 12.25 crore), Kagiso Rabada (INR 10.75 crore) and Prasidh Krishna (INR 9.5 crore). They also have plenty of fast-bowling depth in Gerald Coetzee, Ishant Sharma, Gurnoor Brar, and left-armers Kulwant Khejroliya and Arshad Khan.Related

  • Sai Sudharsan undergoes surgery for sports hernia

  • Torrent Group to buy majority stake in Gujarat Titans

Titans look set to open their batting with an exciting new partnership between Jos Buttler, bought for INR 15.75 crore, and captain Shubman Gill. Buttler had a tough time in India earlier this year, though he was England’s top-scorer in the T20I series, and also in the Champions Trophy, where his team’s group-stage exit forced him to step down as their limited-overs captain. After making 863 runs in IPL 2022, Buttler didn’t pass 400 in 2023 and 2024, but his hundred at Eden Gardens last year to chase down 224 against KKR ranks among the league’s most legendary innings. There has been an addition to Titans’ coaching team, headed by Ashish Nehra, with former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade, who played for Titans until last year, joining as assistant coach.

Big question

Watch out for

When Gill made 890 runs in IPL 2023, he seemed a certainty in India’s future T20I team. But a cooling off of his form and the rise of competitors have forced him to the sidelines. Gill was not part of the squad that won the T20 World Cup 2024, where Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had opened for India, and even after Rohit and Kohli retired from the format, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have overtaken Gill in the queue. He needs another explosive IPL to bring him back into India’s T20 plans.Rashid Khan and Kagiso Rabada: team-mates at MI Cape Town, and now at GT too•SA20While Titans have a solid top three in Gill, Buttler and Sai Sudharsan, and a finisher in Rahul Tewatia, the rest of their batting line-up lacks proven IPL pedigree. The options for the middle and lower order are Sherfane Rutherford or Glenn Phillips (who have played ten and eight IPL matches, respectively), Washington Sundar, Shahrukh Khan, Anuj Rawat and Mahipal Lomror. Unless some of these batters surpass what they have done in the past, Titans could find themselves too top heavy this season.

Key stats

  • Buttler has had success at his new home ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad: he has 317 runs in eight T20s there, with two fifties and a hundred – against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2022.
  • With 12 wickets each, Rabada and Rashid were the joint-highest wicket-takers in MI Cape Town’s successful run to the SA20 title this season.
  • Since the end of IPL 2024, only three bowlers have taken more T20 wickets than Rashid, but none of them have a better average or economy rate. In fact, among bowlers with more than 40 wickets in this period, Rashid has the best average, and only Noor Ahmad (6.52) has a better economy rate than his 6.61.

Who’s out or in doubt?

Gujarat Titans are set to go into IPL 2025 with a fully fit squad. Sudharsan, their highest run-scorer last season, had surgery for a sports hernia last December, but is ready now. Shahrukh, who was injured for the second phase of the Ranji Trophy and most of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, is also good to go.

Was India's six-run win at the Oval their closest in a Test?

Also, were England and India’s four changes apiece for the fifth Test a record?

Steven Lynch05-Aug-2025Was India’s six-run win at the Oval their closest in a Test? asked Jaswant Mohan, among many others
India’s pulsating victory at The Oval yesterday was indeed their closest by runs in any Test match – previously it was a 13-run win over Australia in Mumbai in 2004 (Australia were set 107, but were bowled out for 93).There have been only seven narrower victories by runs in all Tests, including two by just one run, by West Indies over Australia in Adelaide in 1993, and by New Zealand over England in Wellington in 2023.There have also been 15 victories by one wicket, including India’s over Australia in Mohali in October 2010 (VVS Laxman and Pragyan Ojha scrambled 11 for the last wicket to win that one).Ravi Jadeja passed 1000 Test runs in England during the fourth Test, and he’s also taken more than 30 wickets. How many people have done this double over the years? asked Afzal Burman from India
After his century in the second innings at Old Trafford, the Indian allrounder Ravindra Jadeja had 1096 runs in 16 Tests in England, plus 34 wickets: by the end of the Oval Test, he had increased that to 1158 runs (and still 34 wickets). Only two other visiting players have collected more than 1000 runs and 25 wickets in Tests in England: the durable Australian allrounder Charlie Macartney, with 1118 runs and 26 wickets in 21 Tests between 1909 and 1926, and the great West Indian Garry Sobers, who amassed 1820 runs at 53.52 and took 62 wickets at 31.58 in 21 matches between 1957 and 1973. He also pocketed 28 catches.Nine other overseas players have completed the Test double of 500 runs and 25 wickets in England. Of those, Shane Warne took 129 wickets in 22 matches (to go with 563 runs), while Richard Hadlee (70) and Mitchell Starc (65) both took more than 50 wickets. For the fifth Test, both England and India made four changes from the previous match. How unusual is this number of changes mid-series? asked Alex Baker from Scotland
There was an unusual shuffling of the cards for the fifth Test at The Oval last week. It was the sixth time that both teams had made four changes in a Test in the middle of a series, following Australia and India in November 1956, England and Pakistan in July 1962, England and West Indies in July 1976, and Pakistan and Sri Lanka in March 1982 and also in July 2015.In the middle of the 1994-95 series down under, Australia made four changes and Pakistan five, while in England in July 1959, England made six changes and India five between the second and third Tests. But the record was set in Sri Lanka in July 2002, when the hosts made no fewer than seven changes for the second of two Tests, and Bangladesh five. The most team changes by one team in mid-series is the maximum of 11, back in 1884-85 when Australia selected an entirely new side for the second Ashes Test in Melbourne after a pay dispute. England, however, kept an unchanged team. Australia made another seven changes for the third Test in Sydney: four of the “new” team survived, three of the pay rebels returned from the first Test, and four new players were called up – so Australia used 26 different men in the first three Tests of that series.Australia’s 3-0 thumping of West Indies last month was only the second instance a team losing all 60 wickets and still going on to win a Test series•AFP via Getty ImagesIn the recent Test series in the West Indies, Australia lost all 60 wickets but still won the series 3-0. Has this ever happened before? asked Rawle Agard from Canada
The recent Frank Worrell Trophy series in the Caribbean was a low-scoring one, without an individual century, as this column touched on two weeks ago. Looking into it a little more closely, it seems the recent encounter was only the second three-Test series in which all 120 wickets fell. The other one was South Africa vs India in 2017-18, which the home side won 2-1.Early in 2004, Australia won 3-0 in Sri Lanka, despite losing 58 of their 60 wickets in the series (Sri Lanka lost all 60). There are two other three-Test series in which 118 wickets fell, both resulting in 2-1 wins.I noticed that Paul Allott took 26 Test wickets, all of them in England. What’s the most? asked Jack McConnell from Manchester
You’re right that all of the Lancashire and England fast bowler Paul Allott’s 26 Test wickets came in England. He did play two Tests overseas – one in India and one in Sri Lanka in 1981-82 – but failed to strike. Allott did lead the way for England on this esoteric list – until the fifth Test against India at The Oval last week, in which Josh Tongue took eight wickets, which gave him 31 in Tests to date, all so far at home. So Tongue leads the way for England now, at least until he takes a wicket overseas. The overall leader is the unorthodox left-arm spinner Bert “Dainty” Ironmonger, whose 74 Test wickets all came at home in Australia. There are various theories about why he never toured England, ranging from doubts about his bowling action to worries about whether he had the social graces required for such a trip. England definitely missed out on an interesting character: Ironmonger spun the ball off the stump of a finger mangled in a farm accident, and was almost unplayable on a helpful pitch. Against South Africa in Melbourne in February 1932, he took 5 for 6 and 6 for 18 on a “sticky dog” that was drying after rain. He made his Test debut in 1928-29 at the age of 46, and played in the 1932-33 Bodyline series when he was 50 years old.Two more Australians come next: legspinner Herbert “Ranji” Hordern took 46 Test wickets without playing abroad, while the later fast bowler Alan Hurst collected 43. Like Allott, Hurst played two Tests on the subcontinent without taking a wicket. Also ahead of Allott are a trio of South Africans whose wickets all came at home:Mike Procter (41), Alf Hall (40) and “Goofy” Lawrence (28).Shiva Jayaraman of ESPNcricinfo’s stats team helped with some of the above answers.Use our feedback form, or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

Mariners’ Julio Rodriguez Makes Wild MLB History With Home Runs and Stolen Bases

Sunday's Mariners–Rangers game was a big one for Seattle star Julio Rodriguez.

The center fielder crushed his career 100th career home run, a 391-foot two-run homer off of two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom in the third inning.

But, that wasn't the biggest news of the game. This home run was Rodriguez's 20th of the season, marking his fourth consecutive season in which he's logged at least 20 homers. On top of that, Rodriguez has also tallied at least 20 stolen bases in all four of his MLB seasons. With this combination, Rodriguez officially became the first MLB player in history to start their career with four consecutive seasons of at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, per Mariners PR.

Rodriguez has 20 homers and 20 stolen bases so far this season. In his rookie year, the Mariners star logged 28 home runs and 25 stolen bases. His second season was his career-best with 32 HRs and 37 SBs and last year, Rodriguez had 20 HRs and 24 SBs. He's currently on pace to pass his totals from last season.
