John Campbell returns to West Indies ODI squad; Layne, Springer called up

Six years after he last played an ODI, West Indies opener John Campbell has earned a recall for the three-match series against New Zealand starting on Sunday. Fast bowler Johann Layne and seam-bowling allrounder Shamar Springer received their maiden call-ups to the ODI side, while quick Matthew Forde, who returned from a shoulder dislocation for the T20Is against New Zealand, also returned. The trio replaced spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, and left-arm quick Ramon Simmonds, who was injured, from the squad that played Bangladesh last month. Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph and Jediah Blades also were sidelined by injuries.Campbell replaced fellow opener Brandon King from the Bangladesh series. King returned scores of 44, 0 and 18 in the series West Indies lost 2-1. His T20I form has also tapered off, with four single-digit scores in his last five outings across the Bangladesh and New Zealand series.Campbell was recalled following his strong performances in red-ball cricket, including an impressive century in the second Test against India in Delhi last month. He was Jamaica’s leading run-scorer in the Super50 Cup last season, with 278 runs in seven outings at a strike rate of 102.20. Notably, none of the top ten run-getters in that competition scored at a faster pace.Layne’s call-up follows his Test debut on the tour of India last month. While he has impressed in red-ball cricket, he has only 12 List-A appearances and 13 wickets to show in the format. Against New Zealand, Layne will complete the seam attack that features Jayden Seales and Romario Shepherd apart from Springer, Forde and Justin Greaves.Ackeem Auguste, who made his ODI debut in Bangladesh, kept his spot alongside Keacy Carty and Alick Athanaze in the 15-member squad led by Shai Hope.New Zealand and West Indies play the opening ODI in Christchurch on Sunday followed by the second and third matches in Napier and Hamilton, respectively.

Mukidul Islam five-for, Iqbal Hosen ton drive Rangpur Division to NCL title

They secured the title after defending champions Sylhet could only draw their match against Barishal

Mohammad Isam09-Dec-2025Rangpur Division were crowned National Cricket League champions for the 2025-26 season after they beat Khulna Division by seven wickets in Bogra. They completed the win inside three days, but had to wait for the result of the match between defending champions Sylhet Division and Barishal Division in Rajshahi. When Sylhet pulled the plug on their fourth-innings chase, Rangpur were confirmed as the winners.Led by Akbar Ali, Rangpur had earlier won the NCL T20s for the second time in two seasons. When Akbar was off to leading the Bangladesh A side in the ACC Rising Stars tournament last month, Rangpur’s title race went off-kilter, before recovering once he returned. In their last match of this year’s NCL first-class competition, Rangpur trailed Khulna by 134 runs in the first innings. They fought back through Mukidul Islam’s five-wicket haul, which helped skittle out Khulna for just 96 runs. Iqbal Hosen’s maiden first-class century – an unbeaten 114 – helped Rangpur chase 231 in the fourth innings quite comfortably in the end.During Sylhet Division’s draw against against Barishal, Sylhet ended up with a 25-run first-innings deficit despite Zakir Hasan’s 130. He struck 19 fours in his 185-ball stay but his lone hand was not enough to get them to the lead.Akbar Ali with both NCL T20 and first-class trophies•Bangladesh Cricket BoardBarishal then made 294 for 8 in the third innings. Young opener Iftakhar Hossain hit an unbeaten 128, striking 11 fours and four sixes during his 197-ball stay. Mushfiqur Rahim was one of two half-centurions as Sylhet finished on 187 for 5 in their chase of 320.Sylhet finished second in the championship, while newcomers Mymensingh Division took a commendable third position despite going down by 146 runs against Rajshahi Division in Sylhet.Left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam took five wickets to give Rajshahi an 81-run first innings lead. Wicketkeeper Shakhir Hossain then made 94 as Rajshahi set Mymensingh a 428-run target in the fourth innings. They were bowled out for 281. Allrounder Abu Hider struck a career-best unbeaten 141, but Sunzamul completed his eighth ten-wicket match haul with another five-for.At the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka Division cruised past Chattogram Division by an innings and 192 runs.Dhaka openers Ashiqur Rahman Shibli and Anisul Islam Emon struck centuries, though the pair initially didn’t put together a big partnership. Ashiqur, who had retired hurt on 27, resumed his innings when Anisul’s 186 had taken Dhaka to a formidable 359 for 3. Anisul hit 18 fours and five sixes in his six-hours-and-15-minutes stay.Marshall Ayub also enjoyed the run-fest, hitting a 165 laden with 17 fours – it was his 29th first-class century. He had crossed 10,000 first-class career runs earlier in the season.Dhaka fast bowlers Ripon Mondol, Salahuddin Sakil and Sumon Khan took three wickets each to skittle out Chattogram for 158, before they enforced the follow-on. Chattogram improved on their score slightly, getting bowled out for 191 runs. This time, it was left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam who took three wickets for Dhaka.Soumya Sarkar ended as the NCL’s top scorer with 633 runs at an average of 45.21, ahead of Zakir (628 runs) and Marshall Ayub (625). Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam was the only bowler to take more than 30 wickets, finishing with 34 scalps at an average of 22.61.

Arsenal cancel Christmas! Mikel Arteta orders Gunners stars in for training on December 25th despite not playing on Boxing Day

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reportedly instructed his squad to report for training on Christmas Day, despite not being scheduled to play on Boxing Day this year. The Gunners return to Premier League action on December 27 when they host Brighton at the Emirates Stadium, but Arteta is adamant that the preparations must continue without interruption.

  • Gunners told to come in on Christmas Day

According to Arteta will hold a training session at their London Colney base on Christmas morning. Players will be permitted to return home after training, as Arteta remains determined to keep standards high during a crucial stage of the season. Arsenal’s previous game comes just two days earlier, a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace on December 23, and the expectation is that the squad will be granted Christmas Eve off, a date culturally significant for many of the club’s European contingent. Even so, the festive meal will be delayed for several members of the squad, like Ben White, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, who must alter family plans.

Arteta's intense training regime under scrutiny

Arteta’s demand for a Christmas Day session comes at a time when the club’s injury list has drawn criticism, despite the manager repeatedly denying that his methods are too taxing. The Spaniard has dismissed the idea that training intensity is to blame for the spate of issues, but a growing number of observers believe fatigue is beginning to take its toll. The Gunners are currently without several key defenders, including William Saliba, who has missed four matches after suffering a recurrence of complications from an ankle injury sustained earlier this season. Arteta provided fresh insight into Saliba’s condition ahead of Arsenal’s meeting with Wolves, revealing that the defender’s absence stems from compensations he made while recovering from an ankle twist suffered at Anfield in August.

"It was something quite small," he said. "It came from an ankle injury that he had and then he started to modify the way he was running and he started to overload an area, which is something common. But at some point he was uncomfortable continuing to be able to train and play and we had to stop it. He looks better but we'll have to wait and see if it's enough for him to be able to train with the team."

On being pressed whether the defender will be available this weekend, Arteta said: "We have to wait and see. Yesterday we didn’t train, so we have an extra day between this afternoon, let’s see if he can be available or not. It remains the same. If you asked me for the Everton game, I think he will be fit; for tomorrow, I don’t know."

  • Arteta is seeking trophies, not validation

Despite the defensive turbulence, Arsenal responded superbly in midweek, dismantling Club Brugge 3-0 to maintain a perfect Champions League record of six wins from six. Asked whether his side are receiving enough credit for their strong standing across the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup, Arteta brushed off the question.

"I don’t know, that’s not for me to judge," he said. "We’re in a very strong position in the three competitions that we’ve been involved in so far, and that’s what we have to continue to do at the end. The credit has to come at the end of the season, that’s when we’re going to measure what we’ve done, but in order to achieve that, you have to be achieving, every single day, the objectives that you want. So far, I think we are in a very strong position."

    Arsenal's 33-minute flight raises eyebrows

The Gunners made headlines again this week for their 33-minute flight from Luton to Ostend for their Champions League match in Belgium. The journey from Ostend Airport to Bruges by coach took even longer than the time spent airborne. Yet this is not the shortest flight Arsenal have taken, as a 2015 trip to Norwich lasted just 14 minutes and drew criticism at the time. There will be no controversy this weekend, however. Wolves travel to the Emirates for Saturday evening’s Premier League clash, a fixture Arsenal are expected to dominate against a side still searching for their first league win of the season.

'Be a big fish!' – Mohamed Salah told to follow Son Heung-min's path and join Lionel Messi in MLS to end Liverpool career in January

Mohamed Salah has been urged to follow Son Heung-min's example and head to Major League Soccer in January, with Chris Waddle insisting the Liverpool legend should consider a new life in America as age and tactical demands catch up with him. With tensions under Arne Slot still raw, the Egyptian winger is again being pushed toward an Anfield exit as speculation intensifies.

Salah back in Liverpool squad but relations at an all-time low

Liverpool’s internal crisis involving Salah has escalated to the point that external voices are now openly encouraging the Egyptian to pursue a January exit, with the MLS positioned as an ideal landing spot. The fallout from Salah’s public criticism of Slot, followed by his temporary exclusion from the squad, has raised deeper questions about his role, future, and adaptability within the manager’s high-energy tactical model. Although peace talks have paved the way for his return to the squad for the Brighton match this weekend, the wider narrative remains one of uncertainty as Salah prepares to depart for AFCON after the clash with the Seagulls.

This unsettled backdrop has led former Premier League winger Waddle to suggest that Salah, who is now 33, may no longer be well-suited to the physical demands of the Premier League. The winger has struggled defensively in Slot’s system, particularly in tracking back on Liverpool’s right flank, an issue that has contributed to several damaging goals. Combined with a season of declining output with five goals and three assists in 19 appearances, the idea of an early departure has gained momentum.

Interest in Salah has remained strong despite the controversy, especially from the Saudi Pro League and increasingly from MLS, where clubs see an opportunity to attract one of world football’s biggest names. MLS has already lured stars such as Messi, Thomas Muller, and former Spurs icon Son, whose switch in the summer to LAFC set a notable precedent. As Salah edges toward the final stretch of his Liverpool career, the prospect of becoming a marquee figure in the United States is growing increasingly realistic.

Speaking to WhichBookie, Waddle discussed the potential of Salah moving to MLS, saying: “Salah will argue that he wants to play every game,” he said. “Especially given he signed that new contract, there would’ve been expectations that came with that. The game changes, though, so he has to adapt to that.

“If he’s not happy, he should put in a transfer request for January. There’ll be plenty of clubs interested, he’ll have offers. He could do what Heung-min Son did and go to the MLS and have a nice break after AFCON, to start training in March and start a new career in America where he’d be a big fish.”

Waddle went on to discuss Salah's age and his lack of defensive effort being one of the reasons for his fall down Slot's pecking order. “Players want to play forever, but you can’t help the fact that you’re getting old. Unfortunately for Mohamed Salah, he is getting old,” he said. “The game is getting quicker, especially in the Premier League, and there have been cases this season where Conor Bradley has been exposed on that right-hand side because Salah isn’t tracking back, and that’s led to goals.

“What’s being asked of him, to track back and help out the defense, that’s sadly not in his game at the moment. The only way he’ll get that freedom is to play him floating up the pitch, in a Florian Wirtz-type role and tell him that they don’t need him to track back and everyone else picks up the slack.

“You can organise your team to do that and let him get on with things, but he’s getting to that age now where he’ll be feeling the pace of the game, whether he likes it or not. He doesn’t want to be on the bench, so I think Arne Slot is doing the right thing by playing him as and when he sees fit.”

Salah's public fallout with Liverpool has its consquences…

Salah’s current predicament has its roots in a season of poor form for both player and club, with Liverpool languishing tenth and having failed to score in the first half of their last five league matches. Slot’s tactical demands, particularly the need for wingers to contribute defensively, have clashed with Salah’s strengths as he ages into a more attack-focused role. The situation reached boiling point when the Egyptian declared that his relationship with Slot had “completely broken down,” accusing the club of throwing him “under the bus” in a stunning interview that shocked supporters.

This outburst triggered internal sanctions, including Salah’s omission from the Champions League squad to face Inter Milan, which further inflamed speculation about his future. Liverpool officials were forced into a delicate balancing act—protecting team stability while preventing the public spat from overshadowing the club’s season. Although Salah’s subsequent peace talks with Slot have reopened the door to reintegration, the relationship remains fragile and could deteriorate quickly once AFCON begins.

Waddle went on to add that Salah has handed things badly at Liverpool as he added: “I think the way he handled things was wrong,” he said. “I don’t know why players go and do that with the media. Why didn’t he just go and knock on the manager’s door and talk about the options? That’s what’s frustrated everyone.

“If you’re not in the manager's plans, ask to leave and then it’ll get sorted behind closed doors. It should be between him and the club; he shouldn’t be involving the public.

“Wherever he goes, he’ll still be a Liverpool legend, and rightly so. For the goals he’s scored, what he’s done for the club and the titles he has helped them win. That’ll never go away but you don’t want to leave it on a sour note.”

Getty ImagesSalah will soon head away for AFCON duty

Liverpool’s short-term priority is restoring stability, with Salah expected to return for the Brighton match before heading to AFCON, where his absence could further complicate decision-making. Slot insists the next steps depend on their private conversations, maintaining that player-manager discussions must stay behind closed doors to avoid additional crises. Should Salah struggle for minutes or harmony upon returning from international duty, January offers a clear escape route.

MLS remains an increasingly viable option, bolstered by commercial interest, the Son Heung-min precedent, and Waddle’s public endorsement of an American move. Saudi Arabia, too, remains poised to act if a breakdown occurs, though Salah may prefer a less intense spotlight in the United States. As Liverpool weigh financial, tactical, and cultural implications, the next month could define whether Salah completes a turbulent final chapter or ends it early with a high-profile switch overseas.

Tigers Remain Undefeated When Everyone Touches Riley Greene's Lucky Mustache

The Detroit Tigers have been the best team in baseball for most of the season but reverted back to the pack over the past few weeks thanks to a brutal slump. Entering last Sunday's game they had dropped 12 of 13 games and fallen out of position for one of the byes in the American League playoff picture. So Riley Greene took the drastic step of turning his beard into a mustache, hoping the change in facial hair could be the thing that finally turned things around.

And it has.

The Tigers drubbed the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night for their third consecutive victory in the 'stache era. Greene himself homered and had two doubles for his first three extra-base hit game in his already impressive career. Gleyber Torres, who was seen rubbing the lip fuzz for luck, blasted an opposite-field home run. Wencel Perez was a homer shy of the cycle and stole two bases.

"It's not a good look," Greene said after the game. "It's not a good look. But if it means winning, then I’ll keep it."

"We've all touched it," Tigers A.J. Hinch said. "I'm not sure how that's going to go over with quotes around it. Then in the handshake line, he said, 'We're 3-0 with it.'"

Detroit goes for the sweep against Arizona on Wednesday afternoon. Greene is now forced to keep the look until they lose. He knows it doesn't look good but it's a small sacrifice to pull everyone out of a dreadful quagmire.

If the Tigers keep playing well you can rest assured the crowd is going to have more mustaches in solidarity. Something to look forward to.

Juan Soto Blames Ump for Crucial Mistake Late in Mets' Loss to Braves

The New York Mets played the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. The NL East rivalry doesn't have as much juice this season as it has in years past; the Mets are rolling with one of the best records in baseball but the Braves have scuffled all year. Entering Tuesday night's affair there was a 13-game difference between New York and Atlanta in the divisional standings.

Even with that, though, the game did not unfold without some measure of drama.

The score was tied at 4-4 entering the ninth inning at Truist Park. Soto kicked off the top of the ninth with a single to get a man on base for Pete Alonso, batting cleanup. The Mets slugger mashed one deep into right field, but Ronald Acuña Jr. made a great play at the wall and caught the fly ball for the first out of the inning.

But Soto, for some reason, was caught between first and second for a few moments after Acuña made the grab. He seemed confused as to whether Acuña actually caught the ball or if it hit the wall first. His hesitation proved fatal as the Braves star gunned the ball back into the infield to force Soto out at first before he made it back to the bag. What could have been a rally for the Mets suddenly ended up with two outs and nobody on base; they'd go on to lose in extra innings, 5-4.

Afterwards Soto laid the blame right at the feet of the umpire for the crucial blunder, explaining he was waiting for the call to be made and felt the ump took "way too long" to do so.

"I mean, we rely on the umpires," Soto said. "We wait for them to make the call. We had something like that earlier this year too. The goal is look for the umpire and make sure he makes the right call. But I felt like he just took way too long to make the decision and it just put me in a tough spot."

Soto's frustration is clear. Obviously if he assumed the catch was made and booked it back to first base he would have been safe this time. But if he assumed wrong he would have put his team in a bad spot. Similarly if Soto presumed the catch was not made and started sprinting he would have looked foolish if the catch was, in fact, made. It's part of every baseball player's process on the basepaths to look to the umpire or their coaches to determine what happened.

Unfortunately for the Mets Soto couldn't puzzle it out on time Tuesday. He believes the ump needs to be better next time from these quotes.

King and Seales do their bit to make West Indies' grand plan work

Brandon King’s 75 showcased an ability to adapt his white-ball prowess to Test cricket, while Jayden Seales’ double-strike exposed Sam Konstas and Usman Khawaja’s familiar frailties

Andrew McGlashan05-Jul-20250:31

Konstas chops on for a duck

Jayden Seales played his part in keeping Australia’s openers waiting for 51 minutes, uncertain when exactly their need to run off and pad up would come. Then, when it did, he struck a pair of blows that could have significant short and longer-term consequences. If West Indies’ last wicket had gone quickly, Australia’s time with the bat would have been closer to an hour-and-a-half. That does not mean events would have transpired any more favourably for them, but what they ended up with was one of those nothing-to-gain scenarios. Neither Sam Konstas nor Usman Khawaja, players at opposite ends of their careers, could make it through to the close.Konstas dragged on for a duck, his third single-figure score of the series, and looked forlorn as he made his way into the dressing room. Khawaja, yet again, was pinned lbw from around the wicket. He insists he doesn’t have a problem with that angle, but the evidence is starting to suggest otherwise.Related

  • Half-centuries from Smith and Green give Australia control

  • Seales' late strikes, King's 75 put Australia under pressure

  • Hard work done but no pay day for Green as questions linger

In the here and now, it has meant for the second time in the series a Test is finely balanced after two days. Australia ahead by 42 on a pitch that is playing tricks, albeit not quite at the rate of Barbados, but that could well change on the third day, and the new ball is especially demanding. “Anything under 200 runs, I think we’ll be able to get that,” West Indies captain Roston Chase said. With a slightly longer lens, it has left next week’s day-night Test in Jamaica as potentially pivotal in how Australia’s top-order shapes up for the Ashes later in the year. Barring a major reversal from the selectors, Konstas will play at Sabina Park. He has two innings left to make a score substantial enough to at least quieten the debate around him.”You’re here for a reason. I guess you just trust that,” Josh Hazlewood said when asked about the challenges of being a young player in Test cricket having made his international debut as a 19-year-old.”You’re in this position because you’re a good player. Every time I’ve bowled [to] him in the last few months, he just keeps getting better and better, it feels like. He got thrown in a tough situation there. But we saw in the first innings, he played some really nice shots, put some pressure back on the bowlers. I think he’s turning in the right direction. But it’s tough at 19.”Meanwhile, if you go by the selectors’ words, Khawaja’s position is safe. His 47 in the first innings in Barbados was important (although he was dropped on 6) but the pattern of dismissals is hard to ignore.

“I think even if you’re an aggressive batsman in Test cricket, you still have to go with the ebbs and flows. There’s times when bowlers will bowl good spells and you have to battle it out especially on difficult wickets, you can’t attack right through”Brandon King to ESPN

In that regard, West Indies’ bowlers have been exceptional in keeping the pressure on the duo, albeit in favourable conditions. Plans have come together. In Barbados, Shamar Joseph twice brought the ball back at Konstas to exploit a technical weakness. Now in Grenada, clearly looking to play more positively, he has edged behind driving and dragged on looking to play through the off side.”We obviously have our plans for each and every batsman,” Chase said. “I guess that’s the area we’re trying to exploit and it’s been working for us so far.”This West Indies team is beginning a new phase under Chase, named captain after a two-year absence from the side, and coach Daren Sammy. Bowling is clearly their strength, but there were signs with the bat of the broader ideas they are trying to lay out.The most significant innings belonged to Brandon King who complied a maiden Test fifty that complimented aggression (including three sixes) with solid defence. When the squad for the series was named, Sammy explained that King, a player largely known for his white-ball exploits, had been picked for a specific role.He had been included on the back of a domestic season where he played just four first-class matches and averaged 30.25. West Indies are trying to find solutions to long-held batting problems; King’s innings was an example of striking the right balance.0:31

Seales strikes again as Khawaja burns review

The over before lunch, he collected two boundaries off Nathan Lyon. Shortly after the break, he pulled Hazlewood over the leg side for six and later twice took Lyon straight down the ground. But between the aggression, and dashes of his white-ball pedigree, was watchfulness.Carlos Braithwaite, speaking on ESPN’s , noted how bowlers will often look to bring the ball back into King, but in this innings he played with a very straight bat, the benefits of work he had done with assistant coach Floyd Reifer on his balance.”I think even if you’re an aggressive batsman in Test cricket, you still have to go with the ebbs and flows,” King told ESPN. “There’s times when bowlers will bowl good spells and you have to battle it out especially on difficult wickets, you can’t attack right through. It’s about recognising those moments as best as possible and when you feel like you’re on top and can get some runs, you continue.”Twice during the second day – at 64 for 3 and 174 for 7 – it looked like things could go wrong for West Indies. But they dug deep to keep themselves in the contest, to such an extent that Australia were the happier side to see the clock tick down as Lyon received treatment for a blow on the arm in what became the final over.”From the time you saw him get hit, you know he’s an experienced customer, we knew that that was going to be the last [over],” Chase said with a smile.West Indies couldn’t stay with Australia on the third day in Barbados. Now they have given themselves another chance.
