Suarez & Carroll 2.0: Liverpool “very optimistic” over two late signings

Liverpool’s summer transfer window has been defined by a mix of strategic reinforcement and high-profile exits.

The departures of Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz have left gaps in the Reds’ squad, prompting Arne Slot and sporting director Michael Edwards to seek both immediate impact and long-term value.

With a Champions League campaign to contend with and a Premier League title defence underway, the urgency to reinforce the spine of the squad has become paramount.

So far, Liverpool have bolstered their ranks with Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike, blending young talent with proven performers.

The opening weeks of the season have seen the side make a strong start, with victories over Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Yet, the club are now targeting the gaps which remain ahead of the closing days of the transfer window.

Central to this strategy is Liverpool’s ambition to secure a transformative duo – a forward capable of dominating the final third and a defender who can anchor a restructured backline.

Liverpool manager ArneSlotlooks on

Reports suggest that at least one of these players is expected to join before Deadline Day, potentially rewriting the club’s transfer narrative in a manner few signings have in recent memory.

Liverpool hoping to complete double deal

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool are “very optimistic” about concluding deals for both Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi, although financial realities may dictate that only one is completed initially.

The Swedish striker, valued at around £130m, has made his desire to leave Newcastle abundantly clear.

Isak did not feature in Newcastle’s opening Premier League fixture against Aston Villa and is expected to remain sidelined as the club works to finalise his transfer.

The arrival of Nick Woltemade for £69m has cleared a pathway, enabling the Magpies to consider sanctioning the deal.

On the defensive side, Liverpool have identified Palace captain Guehi as a solution to a backline in transition.

With Virgil van Dijk entering his thirties, Ibrahima Konaté nearing the end of his contract, and Jarrel Quansah sold to Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds face a pressing need for a centre-back capable of delivering both consistency and versatility.

Guehi’s contract is entering its final year, and while Palace value the England international at £40m, Liverpool are reportedly holding out for a reduction, mindful of the player’s ambition to secure regular game time ahead of next year’s World Cup.

A modern-day Suarez and Carroll

The potential arrival of Isak and Guehi represents a seismic shift for Liverpool, both in tactical terms and in financial prudence.

Historically, the Reds have made headline-grabbing acquisitions such as Luis Suárez and Andy Carroll.

Suárez, signed for approximately £22.8m from Ajax, became a club legend, scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances and winning the FWA Footballer of the Year in 2014.

Carroll, by contrast, was a £35m British-record signing whose impact was underwhelming, netting just 11 goals in 58 appearances before a £15m exit to West Ham.

Isak and Guehi present a dual solution that combines the promise of Suárez with the physical presence Liverpool initially sought in Carroll, without the risk of underperformance.

Isak has emerged as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards, scoring 23 goals and providing six assists in 34 Premier League matches last season.

He also contributed in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, demonstrating his capacity to deliver in high-pressure moments.

Guehi, meanwhile, made 34 appearances for Crystal Palace last season, contributing three goals and excelling defensively with 4.6 clearances and 1.8 tackles per game.

He is also effective in ball progression and offensive phases. According to FBref, he ranks in the 98th percentile for through balls and the 88th percentile for shot-creating actions among centre-backs.

At 25, Isak is entering his prime, with a 2024/25 campaign marked by 29 goal involvements, 3.1 shots per 90 minutes, and 2.71 progressive carries per 90, reflecting his ability to drive play while finishing efficiently.

His progressive passing distance of 53.7 metres per 90 and shot-creating actions of 3.01 per game highlight a forward capable of linking with teammates and influencing wide and central zones alike. Meanwhile, Guehi offers a rare blend of defensive solidity and technical intelligence.

His aerial dominance, tackling efficiency, and ability to progress the ball are complemented by an unusual offensive contribution for a centre-back, ensuring Liverpool can build from the back while retaining a threat during set-pieces.

In a system that relies heavily on full-backs and ball-playing defenders, his 77th percentile ranking for crosses and 75th percentile for switches per 90 minutes underlines his compatibility with Slot’s tactical philosophy.

Taken together, Isak and Guehi constitute a more complete strategic investment than the club’s previous marquee signings.

Where Suárez delivered pure offensive output and Carroll offered raw physicality with mixed results, this duo promises a combination of scoring prowess, versatility, and adaptability that could provide immediate returns while underpinning Liverpool’s long-term squad structure.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For a club with ambitions of Premier League supremacy and deep European runs, securing both players would represent not merely squad reinforcement but a redefinition of transfer strategy – a calculated, high-value investment in proven performers with a capacity for sustained impact.

Should Liverpool succeed, the window will be remembered as one of the best in the club’s history – eclipsing previous transfers in both scope and quality.

Harsh Dubey, Parth Rekhade spin Vidarbha into the lead

Sachin Baby, who was a symbol of concentration and grit all day to construct 234-ball 98, fell with Kerala 56 away from a first-innings lead

Stumps A thrilling third day’s play of the Ranji Trophy final took a potentially decisive turn late in the third session, when Sachin Baby, who was a symbol of concentration and grit all day to construct 234-ball 98, fell with Kerala 56 away from a first-innings lead. That opened the floodgates for hosts Vidarbha to barge the door down, by picking up the three remaining wickets quickly to take a 37-run lead by stumps.Harsh Dubey and Parth Rekhade, the left-arm spin twins, picked up six wickets between them as Kerala saw the lead snatched from under their rug in eerily similar circumstances to what they did to Gujarat only a week earlier. Dubey ended with 3 for 88 across 44 overs, to surpass Ashutosh Aman’s tally for most wickets in a single Ranji season. He’s now on top of the list with 69 wickets. The big moment came 30 minutes into the final session when Rekhade danged a carrot with Baby approaching three figures in his 100th first-class game. With mid-on in, Baby looked to launch him over the infield but ended up dragging it to Karun Nair at the deep midwicket boundary. Baby took an eternity to walk off and couldn’t believe what he’d done. In that moment, it felt as if Kerala’s hopes hinged on a lead that eventually was taken away from them when the lower order was snuffed out.Jalaj Saxena, Kerala’s last hope, soldiered on for 76 deliveries to make 28 before an attempted paddle off Rekhade had him miss the ball as it crashed into the stumps. Kerala still needed 43, but there was a sense that the end was nigh. Saxena’s wicket was massive, for he was looking completely at ease against the turning ball that occasionally spat on the batters with a few spots from the rough areas of both ends making it difficult for the batters.Like it has on many occasions, the prelude to Saxena’s wicket was a lengthy recovery break when Yash Rathod fell flat on the ground with cramps and needed treatment from the physio before play resumed. It was almost as if that break forced a slight lapse in concentration from Saxena as he attempted to paddle one from outside off, having played that stroke a number of times during his innings to deliveries drifting into the pads.Darshan Nalkande finished with 3 for 52 in the first innings•PTI

Once Saxena fell, Kerala folded with 19-year-old Eden Apple Tom, playing in only his third Ranji game and his first in nearly three years, bowled attempting a sweep after he’d blunted the bowling for a better part of the last 45 minutes. The last hour undid all the hard work Baby did in being able to have Kerala dare to dream of a lead, but he’ll know with two full days left and two quality spinners in his ranks, Kerala’s ability to bounce back will depend on how quickly they’re able to lift themselves from the pall of gloom that seemed to have set into the dressing room when their final wicket fell. The nature of Kerala’s collapse in the end was dramatic and won’t tell you how well the batters had done to give them sight of a lead in the first place. Local boy and two-time Ranji winner with Vidarbha, Aditya Sarwate, led the way with 79, and was the first to fall on the third day when he was prised out by Dubey, who quickly changed his approach from trying to bowl full and flat to looping it into the batters and having them jab at deliveries.Once such delivery that jumped at Sarwate lobbed off the bat to Danish Malewar at silly point just a few minutes after he’d reprieved him by putting down a low catch at gully. That wicket forced Vidarbha to go on an attack, as Baby, who overturned an lbw through DRS on 54, opened up to play some wonderful shots – the secret to his runs early on lay in how late he played the ball and how disciplined he was outside off.Mohammed Azharuddeen took much pressure off Baby as he late cut the spinners well to keep picking runs and bring the deficit close to double digits when Vidarbha’s decision to take the second new ball midway through the 93rd over immediately paid dividends. Off the very first ball of the 94th, Azharuddeen was trapped lbw by Darshan Nalkande’s in-ducker that beat his inside edge.Saxena then showed some intent up front by hitting two boundaries off his first five deliveries, before he buckled down in Baby’s company. The pair added 46 when Baby’s hoick – what would best be described a brain fade – changed the complexion of the innings, and possibly the match itself.

Everton must regret selling their original Dibling who left "like a rat"

David Moyes smiles, and it’s a cheery smile at that. The 62-year-old has been quizzed on his reaction to Everton’s summer transfer business, and he is content with what he has seen.

Statman Dave hailed the Scottish manager as a “football genius” after his latest success, guiding Everton toward greener pastures. It’s an incomplete task and still in its early phase, but the signs are certainly promising.

Experienced stars such as Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have added flair and control to a Toffees team transitioning toward something more modern, still rooted in Moyes’ core tactical principles.

And who could be a better representation of that than the young and daring Tyler Dibling? Signed from Southampton for £42m in August, the 19-year-old attacking midfielder is the future at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Why Everton signed Tyler Dibling

Everton looked to have added much to their attacking midfield ranks when landing Grealish, but Moyes still needed someone competent when coming off the right, and Dibling was the top target.

A series of efforts to sign the fleet-footed teenager were thwarted, but Everton finally secured their man, adding a rising star capable of standing out amongst giants within the Premier League.

He struggled for prolific success on the south coast last term, but then Southampton were embroiled in a pitiful relegation battle, and Dibling was hailed all the same for his “world-class talent” by Southampton’s academy manager, Andy Goldie.

Dibling has the world at his feet, and if all goes to plan regarding the former Saints prospect’s development over the coming years, it could lead Moyes to creating Everton’s new version of Anthony Gordon, a player whose unsavoury exit almost three years ago remains a regretful thing to this day.

Everton must regret losing Anthony Gordon

While few of an Everton persuasion would have wanted Gordon to stay put after his antics in the build-up to his £45m transfer to Newcastle United in January 2023, his decision to force his way out of Goodison Park left a very sour taste on the saga.

A product of Everton’s youth academy, the Merseyside-born winger completed 77 appearances for the Toffees first team before his move, playing regularly in the Premier League for a year-and-a-half before his switch.

And despite banking a healthy sum for his sale, there’s so much to be frustrated about, with Gordon crowned Newcastle’s Player of the Year in 2023/24 and now standing tall as one of the most prominent wide forwards in England.

The acquisition of a young star such as Dibling will perhaps hand Everton the keys to fashion their new version of the England international, one who could stay for a greater period of their career, instead of taking flight at a critical point in the club’s history.

TalkSPORT host Simon Jordan rather unceremoniously likened Gordon’s Merseyside exit to being “like a rat wants to desert a sinking ship”, which is unquestionably unfair but still underlines the prevailing mood when the young winger did indeed jump ship.

Perhaps the whole ordeal reflects the state Everton were in at the time, kept afloat thereafter by Sean Dyche’s prowess in battling against the current of relegation.

But it still stings. Everton collected £45m for their wantaway prospect, but his value has since soared toward the ballpark of £100m, and he could have become a superstar in Everton blue had circumstances been different.

Still, with Moyes now running the show and the Toffees showing signs this season of real progress toward higher Premier League ground, it’s one that fans will choose not to think about too much.

Everton signed Iliman Ndiaye last summer and have now welcomed a prodigy in Dibling, after all.

واستطاع باز أن ينفجر بشكل واضح مع كومو، حيث حصل اللاعب البالغ من العمر 21 عامًا على جائزة أفضل لاعب شاب في الدوري الإيطالي الموسم الماضي.
