The English influx to the WBBL continues with Tammy Beaumont signing with Melbourne Renegades while Adelaide Strikers have signed Southern Brave off-spinning allrounder Georgia Adams for the upcoming season despite her having not played international cricket.Beaumont’s signing is not a surprise after the England opener had opted out of the WBBL overseas draft and instead had committed to the tournament via a new direct signing rule. Overseas players were given the option of bypassing the draft and signing directly with a club, but could only do so at a restricted salary of AU$61,750, despite the platinum and gold picks in the draft earning AU$110,000 and AU$90,000 respectively.Beaumont joined England team-mates Amy Jones (Perth Scorchers) and Sophia Dunkley (Melbourne Stars), as well as South Africa pair Mignon du Preez (Brisbane Heat) and Lizelle Lee (Hobart Hurricanes), and New Zealander Suzie Bates in taking the direct nomination route. Bates is expected to return to Sydney Sixers but it has yet to be confirmed.Related

Beaumont played for Renegades previously in 2019 before having three seasons with Sydney Thunder, including playing in their 2020 title success. So batting depth is what we’re looking to develop.”Georgia Adams dented Superchargers with three wickets•ECB/Getty Images

Meanwhile, Strikers have made a bold move in recruiting Adams, who will also play for New South Wales this season, despite the fact she has not played international cricket. Strikers only took two players at the draft, South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt and emerging England allrounder Danielle Gibson. They did not retain title-winning West Indies allrounder Deandra Dottin mainly due to salary cap constraints.Instead, they have opted to sign Adams post the draft which is allowed under WBBL rules after the 29-year-old had nominated but was not selected by any team. Adams reunites with Strikers coach Luke Williams after the pair worked together to help Southern Brave win the Women’s Hundred this year, with Williams working as an assistant coach under Charlotte Edwards.Adams was a key contributor for Brave in their title with both bat and ball. She was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 16 scalps and an economy rate of just 6.83. She also made a match-winning 50 not out from 32 balls against Oval Invincibles late in the season and contributed a vital 27 in the low-scoring final.”Georgia is someone that consistently performs in domestic cricket in the UK and is able to perform in a number of different roles with bat, ball and in the field,” Williams said.”Her adaptability and ability to perform under pressure is something that stood out and fitted what we were looking for.”Georgia is a great team person who has some experience in leadership positions as well, so I have no doubt that Georgia will fit in fantastically with the Strikers group and I’m really looking forward to her contribution.”

Cornered lions England and Sri Lanka aim for miraculous resurrection

Both teams are near the point of no return, with two points each from four games

Alan Gardner25-Oct-2023Big picture: Stragglers in desperate search for pointsSo, how’s that whole “attacking champions” thing working out? Jos Buttler may always regret saying England wouldn’t be “trying to defend anything” out in India – a statement that appears to be coming true uncomfortably quickly – but they are not quite at the point of no return, despite only being kept off the bottom of the table by Bangladesh’s thumping defeat to South Africa on Tuesday. Cornered lions, anyone?Peeling off five wins in a row in order to reach 12 points – which would include beating the behemoth that is India on their own patch – looks a tall order, even before you account for the trough into which England’s ODI form has fallen. But if the miracle resurrection is going to start somewhere then it will have to be in Bengaluru against fellow stragglers Sri Lanka on Thursday. As the sun was beating down on England in Mumbai – it can get quite hot in India, who knew? – during that epochal shellacking by South Africa, several hundred kilometres to the north, Sri Lanka were quietly working their way on to the board at this World Cup, ending a debilitating run of three consecutive defeats with a five-wicket win over Netherlands. Expectations were not so high but, like England, they have found themselves on the ropes, pummelled for a record World Cup total by South Africa in their opener, then succumbing to a record World Cup chase against Pakistan.Related

England's Mumbai meltdown shows their tactics were stuck in the past

These teams have plenty of World Cup history, too. Before England stumbled against New Zealand in Ahmedabad, Sri Lanka were the last World Cup holders to lose their opening match – beaten by the hosts (yep, England) in 1999. But Sri Lanka have won all four encounters in the competition since then and five out of the last six, along the way handing out memorably brutal lessons in Faisalabad, Colombo and Wellington. What to expect this time? England are clearly in a hole after three chastening losses, and it will take a confidence trick of sizeable proportions to turn things around. They have tried shrugging off defeat, they have tried “letting it hurt”, they have tried the old “go harder” mantras. From the outside, Matthew Mott has not had to intervene much since taking charge of the white-ball teams in mid-2022 (in which time, of course, they have added a T20 World Cup to the trophy cabinet) but some inspiration is now required if this campaign is not going be ranked alongside the worst of their horror run between 1996-2015.In terms of selection, having already used the 15 players they took out, there are few cards left for England to play – although there is a lingering hope that the incoming Brydon Carse can prove a Liam Plunkett-esque battering ram to raise their threat in the middle overs. The batting has misfired more than anyone expected, with just one century and four fifties so far, but a Sri Lanka attack that began the tournament by conceding scores of 428 for 5 and 345 for 4 might be more to their liking.England’s batting has been found wanting so far•Associated Press

As for Sri Lanka’s hopes, with fixtures against India and New Zealand still to come, it’s a hard road to get into the top four. But they have shown glimpses of their abilities, mainly through Kusal Mendis (who has assumed the captaincy alongside the gloves) and Sadeera Samarawickrama with the bat, as well as Dilshan Madushanka’s wicket-taking ability with the ball.Their impressive World Cup record against England won’t maintain itself but victory would leave at least one Englishman happy, with head coach, Chris Silverwood, coming up against the side he used to coach for a second time (Sri Lanka having lost a tight game in the group stage at last year’s T20 World Cup). On the ground where England famously tied with India and lost to Ireland in 2011, we might even be due a close finish…Form guideEngland LLWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka WLLLLIn the spotlight: Jos Buttler and Kusal MendisSo far at this World Cup, England’s captain has been let down by his best batter. Luckily, Jos Buttler doesn’t mind having a word with himself – famously, he has a two-word phrase written on the top of his bat handle as a reminder of what to do when in doubt – and a quick pep talk might be in order after four innings which have realised just 87 runs. His captaincy was called into question following the decision to bowl first against South Africa but there would be no better way to lift England’s faltering campaign than by producing the sort of middle-order devastation few others are capable of.Kusal Mendis has carried Sri Lanka’s hopes with the bat•ICC via Getty Images

In the opposite corner, another wicketkeeper-captain who carries his side’s hopes with the bat. It is only just over two years since Kusal Mendis was sent home from a tour of England for breaching Covid-19 biosecurity rules but here he is now, leading the side in the wake of Dasun Shanaka’s injury. Mendis was the spark in Sri Lanka’s opening two games, with 76 off 42 in the doomed chase against South Africa and then a 65-ball hundred against Pakistan. He also knows what it takes to beat England in a World Cup, as one of four survivors from the XI that produced an upset at Headingley in 2019.Team news: Carse, Mathews come in as injury replacementsCarse has linked up with the squad after being brought in for the injured Reece Topley, but is not expected to be in contention for this game having most recently bowled in the ODI series with Ireland last month. Chris Woakes seems likeliest to win a return as Topley’s replacement with the new ball. Mott said England would look at the balance of their XI again after defeat in Mumbai, with Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran all offering different skillsets if they return to the allrounder blueprint.England (probable): 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Dawid Malan, 3 Joe Root, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Jos Buttler (capt, wk), 6 Harry Brook, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 David Willey, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Gus Atkinson/Mark WoodSri Lanka have been granted permission to bring in vastly experienced former captain Angelo Mathews as a replacement for Matheesha Pathirana, although it is unclear what role he might play having only made three ODI appearances in the last two-and-a-half years. Dunith Wellalage might come back into contention having sat out the win over Netherlands.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Kusal Mendis (capt, wk) 4 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Dushan Hemantha/Dunith Wellalage, 8 Chamika Karunaratne, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Kasun Rajitha, 11 Dilshan MadushankaPitch and conditionsThe M Chinnaswamy Stadium has a reputation for high-scoring games and lived up to it when the World Cup finally arrived in Bengaluru with Australia vs Pakistan last week – a game in which 672 runs were scored across 95.3 overs. The strip for Thursday’s match is slightly off-centre, with an invitingly short boundary towards neighbouring Cubbon Park, and looks hard and dry despite a patchy covering of live grass. The city’s climate tends to be more temperate, which might prevent England from running completely out of puff if fielding first (but equally might not, since the mercury could still hit 31°C during the afternoon).Stats and trivia These teams have met 11 times at the ODI World Cup, with England 6-5 up on head-to-head… but, Sri Lanka have won each of the last four meetings, including a quarter-final thrashing in 2011 and a shock result four years ago that put England’s home World Cup hopes in jeopardy. Overall, since being beaten by nine wickets at the 2015 World Cup, England have won eight out of 11 ODIs between the sides, with one tie. England have played five ODIs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium – including those two memorable 2011 World Cup games – but last won there on the 1993 tour of India. Sri Lanka’s one appearance, meanwhile, came back in 1982. Buttler needs 90 runs to become the fifth Englishman to 5000 in ODIs; Joe Root needs 70 for 1000 at World Cups. Maheesh Theekshana is four wickets shy of 50.Quotes”If I do play, I could go for a few runs because it’s quite small and a flat wicket, but it’s also good for batting. It’s one of those grounds where scoring is quick and batting deep makes a big difference.”

Harris makes most of his opportunity to push case as Warner's replacement

Opener scored a brisk hundred on the second day against Pakistan

Marcus Harris, who is among those pushing to replace David Warner in Australia’s Test side, made the most of an extra red-ball innings with a brisk century on the second day of Pakistan’s warm-up match against a Victoria XI.Harris struck 126 off 131 balls at Junction Oval, the innings including 22 fours and six, ahead of the selectors needing to make a call on a new opener early next month after Warner retires following the Sydney Test.Whether the innings has any bearing on selection remains to be seen, but Harris made full use of the hastily arranged fixture which the PCB had asked for. The game was played behind closed doors, which was understood to be due to challenges of finding enough staff to open the venue at short notice rather than the visitors not wanting anyone to attend.Related

Although not a first-class match, the century adds to Harris’ impressive record at the ground where he averages 79.85 in four-day cricket although it is widely regarded as one of the flatter pitches in the country.Harris, who doesn’t hold a BBL contract, had an up and down first part of the season for Victoria where he averaged 31.33 in five Sheffield Shield matches. He also faced Pakistan for the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra where he made 49.He is one of three specialist openers in the mix to replace Warner, alongside Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw, although there remains a chance the selectors opt for a batting order reshuffle to accommodate Cameron Green. However, so far, the potential candidates for promotion from within the current XI have been lukewarm to the idea.”I think Cam’s skillful enough to play in any position for his country,” Alex Carey said on Saturday. “Again, probably like the Cameron and Mitch [Marsh] situation, it’s a great headache for Australian cricket to have. There’s so many amazing players around the country who are scoring runs. We’ve got a lot of great players around this group who could easily fit into the top six anywhere.”We’ve still got a couple more games of Davey, if it is the end of Davey. To celebrate that is probably what I’m more keen on, to celebrate an amazing cricketer in Davey, rather than get too hung up over who will fill his shoes.”Harris played the most recent of his 14 Tests against England, at Sydney, in early 2022 following which he became the fall guy to accommodate Usman Khawaja after he’d returned in that same match with twin hundreds. He has since been a regular reserve batter around the Test squad, including this year’s Ashes tour, and holds a CA central contract.”I feel like I’ve had seven or eight years of good cricket,” Harris said during the PM’s XI game. “Probably ever since I’ve moved to Victoria, feel like I’ve proven myself enough, especially in domestic cricket, whether or not in international cricket that’s up for debate and other people’s opinion.”In my last couple of Tests felt I was just getting going then things out of my control didn’t go my way, but that’s okay. I’ve been in this position the last few years, so if it comes down to one game then so be it.”

Punjab batter Uday Saharan will lead India’s title defence at the 2024 ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa in January and February. India are the most successful side in the tournament’s history, having won it five times in 2000, 2008, 2012, 2018 and 2022.Saharan, who is currently captaining India at the Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai, was the highest scorer at the Under-19 Challenger Trophy held in Guwahati last month. He made 297 runs in four innings, with four half-centuries and a best of 93 not out. The tournament had 45 players competing for World Cup slots, picked by India’s junior selection panel headed by former Karnataka wicketkeeper Thilak Naidu.Allrounder Musheer Khan, who bats in the middle order and bowls left-arm spin, is one of only two players – Baroda’s Priyanshu Moliya being the other – in the 15-man squad with first-class experience. Musheer is the younger brother of Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan, who had played for India in the 2014 and 2016 Under-19 World Cups.Musheer had scored 127 off 47 balls and took two wickets in a quadrangular U-19 series match in November, and was the third highest scorer in the Under-19 Challenger Trophy with 268 runs at a strike rate of 108.Last year, he led Mumbai to the final of the Cooch Behar Trophy, where he was named Player of the Tournament for his 670 runs and 32 wickets. Those performances earned him a Ranji Trophy debut against Saurashtra. He has played three first-class matches so far and has been shortlisted among 333 players at the IPL 2024 auction on December 19.Another breakout star in the squad is Maharashtra allrounder Arshin Kulkarni, who impressed talent scouts at the Maharashtra Premier League. He bowls medium pace and is a top-order bat. Following his MPL exploits, Kulkarni played for Maharashtra in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and is among the uncapped Indian players at the IPL auction.Karnataka’s Dheeraj Gowda and Baroda’s Raj Limbani lead a strong pace attack. Gowda was the top wicket-taker at the Challengers (nine wickets with an economy of 4.42) while Limbani took 7 for 13 against Nepal at the Under-19 Asia Cup on Tuesday. Himachal’s Innesh Mahajan and Hyderabad’s Avanish Rao are the two wicketkeepers. Before the World Cup, India will play a U-19 tri-series against the hosts South Africa and England from December 29 to January 10.India are in Group A along with Bangladesh, Ireland and USA at the World Cup and play their first match against Bangladesh on January 20 in Bloemfontein.
