Liverpool now battling to beat Jurgen Klopp in race to sign "powerful" gem

Still looking to commence their January business, Liverpool are now reportedly battling against former manager Jurgen Klopp to sign a future star who is attracting plenty of interest.

Liverpool transfer news

Having opted not to splash the cash in the summer transfer window upon Arne Slot’s arrival, some may have expected the Reds to hand the Dutchman one or two reinforcements this month, but so far that has not been the case. Top of the Premier League and top of the Champions League – and both very convincingly so – those at Anfield have so far decided that Slot’s squad good enough as it is.

Instead, Liverpool have been forced to think about potential departures this month. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are still yet to put pen to paper on new deals and that has only sparked exit rumours, particularly in the case of Alexander-Arnold. With Real Madrid’s interest no secret these days, the right-back has seen his name linked to the Bernabeu since the beginning of the month.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

That’s not to say no rumours over potential incomings have arrived, however. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are now battling Klopp to sign Ryan One from Sheffield United. The 18-year-old has impressed for the Blades and earned interest from Anfield, Brighton & Hove Albion and Red Bull clubs RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg as a result.

Whether the Reds make their move as early as this month remains to be seen, but seeing Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes square off against Klopp in the transfer market would certainly be an interesting scenario a year on from when the German announced he would leave at the end of the last campaign. That said, One could be a player to watch in the final days of the winter window.

"Powerful" One is a rising star

At just 18 years old, One is already making an impact for Sheffield United’s senior side under Chris Wilder, scoring once in two starts and 10 appearances in the Championship. As things stand, the only way is up for the young forward who may yet have the biggest decision of his career so far to make in the coming weeks or months.

The striker role is certainly one that is up for grabs at Liverpool, even for a player as young as One. With Darwin Nunez yet to convince, Diogo Jota proving unreliable thanks to his injury record and Luis Diaz merely a square peg in a round hole, any forward who is good enough should be considered ready enough to lead the line at Anfield.

One has unsurprisingly found himself at the centre of praise in recent months, including from Scottish football experts Scotball, who described the young Scotland forward as “powerful” at the start of the month.

A player to watch, One could find himself playing Premier League football with or without Sheffield United by the time that next season arrives.

Deandra Dottin's shock retirement took Hayley Matthews by surprise

The Barbados and West Indies captain had no idea that Dottin was going to retire in the middle of the Commonwealth Games

Barbados and West Indies captain Hayley Matthews has said she had no warning that Deandra Dottin was planning to retire from international cricket midway through the Commonwealth Games, and is planning to discuss the matter with her team-mate now that their campaign in Birmingham is over.Matthews, who was appointed as West Indies captain in June, said she was as surprised as anyone by Dottin’s shock announcement via Twitter on Monday, citing concerns over the team environment.Related

“Thankful to Deandra for everything she’s done for West Indies cricket,” Matthews said when asked about her reaction to Dottin’s decision. “She’s obviously been a wonderful player for us over the last couple of years, and it’s sad to see her go, but at the same time if it’s something that she’s ready for, then supporting her 100%.”Matthews said she hadn’t spoken to Dottin before the announcement and that she had “no interpretation” of Dottin’s comments about the team culture and environment.”[I’m] obviously down here representing Barbados and everything, so probably not looking to speak too much on that at the moment,” Matthews said on Wednesday after her side suffered a 100-run defeat against India in their final Group A game. “But yeah, I definitely would have a chat with her and see how things go.”Barbados won their opening match of the Commonwealth Games against Pakistan by 15 runs before losing by nine wickets to gold-medal favourites Australia on Sunday. The following day, Dottin published a letter addressed to Cricket West Indies on Twitter announcing her “formal retirement from the senior women’s West Indies team effective 1st July 2022”. Dottin, who has a contract to play in the Hundred for Manchester Originals and will captain Trinbago Knight Riders in the Women’s CPL, also said that she was “looking forward to playing domestic cricket around the world”.Deandra Dottin in her retirement note said she was looking forward to play domestic cricket around the world•BCCI

“There have been many obstacles during my cricket career that I have had to overcome, however, the current climate and team environment has been non-conducive to my ability to thrive and reignite my passion,” Dottin wrote in her announcement. “With much sadness but without regret, I realise that I am no longer able to adhere to team culture and team environment as it has undermined my ability to perform excellently.”Dottin, the scorer of the fastest century in Women’s T20Is and West Indies’ most-capped international cricketer, having played 124 T20Is and 143 ODIs for them, had a lacklustre Commonwealth Games. She played three T20Is for Barbados, scoring 8, 8 and 0, and taking 1 for 65 from six overs in the tournament. When she juggled a catch running from point to short cover, the ball bouncing out of her hand and onto her chin before she held on at the second grab to dismiss India’s Taniya Bhatia off Matthew’s bowling on Wednesday, the Barbados team-mates shared a laugh and a warm hug. While Matthews said she was “a bit disappointed with the result” against India, she was proud of what her team had achieved with a mix of seven West Indies-capped players among a clutch of players without prior international experience.”I think we put up a really good fight,” Matthews said. “The highlight was our first game against Pakistan and winning one out of three I think is better than a lot of people expected us to do. So although we didn’t have the result we wanted today, I still think we had a great tournament, and the girls were able to learn a lot for sure.”Hopefully spurs West Indies and the entire Caribbean to want to put more into women’s cricket within the Caribbean. I think they’re doing a great job now. We just had our regional tournament, and if over the next couple of years we can continue to grow our domestic set-up, hopefully, we can see some younger players that we had today being able to compete at the highest level.”Having had her first taste of international captaincy with Barbados, who secured a place at the Commonwealth Games on the strength of being T20 Blaze champions in 2019, Matthews was keen to carry on with West Indies.”I would have learned a lot just throughout these three games, taking responsibility and working with a lot of the younger players who weren’t as experienced at this level,” she said. “The support I’ve gotten from the team has been amazing.”You probably think that the pinnacle of the career is if you can lead out your nation or your country, so I think [it was] definitely something I eyed up. But [I’m] just grateful that I’ve been given the opportunity to lead not only Barbados but the region as well and really humbled by it.”

Boucher: Getting Rabada fit for England Test 'the biggest priority'

The fast bowler missed the third T20I against England and both matches against Ireland after injuring ligaments in his left ankle

Getting Kagiso Rabada fit for the first Test against England on August 17, is “the biggest priority for our Test side,” according to coach Mark Boucher. Rabada missed the third T20I against England and both matches against Ireland after injuring ligaments in his left ankle but South Africa hope to have him ready for the red-ball leg of the tour.”KG bowled a bit today and he will be bowling a bit tomorrow. He seems to be fine. But we will try and work him back. His loads are a little bit low at the moment but we will do everything in our power to try and get him fit for the first Test,” Boucher said after South Africa swept Ireland 2-0.Related

Ankle injury puts Rabada out of T20Is against Ireland

“That’s the biggest priority for our Test side – to get KG firing. We know what an important part of the team he is. That’s our biggest goal: to try and get him fit for the first Test.”Even before his injury, Rabada has not looked at his best recently. After being rested for the ODI series, he returned to play two T20Is, bowled seven overs across the two matches and took 1 for 75. Before that, Rabada played in South Africa’s series in India and bowled 13 overs in four matches with a return of 2 for 86. He has not played Test cricket since South Africa’s tour of New Zealand in February, where he was their leading wicket-taker, and missed the series against Bangladesh which clashed with the IPL.Should Rabada not recover in time for the first Test, it would be a second major blow to South Africa. They are already without white-ball captain and Test vice-captain Temba Bavuma on this tour, as he recovers from an elbow injury. They have six other seamers in their Test squad: Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje (who has not played Tests in more than a year), Marco Jansen, Duanne Olivier, Lutho Sipamla and Glenton Stuurman.

Arsenal join race to sign £30m Brazil striker with initial talks held

Arsenal have now joined the race to sign a Brazil striker, who could be available for quite a realistic transfer fee in this inflated market, as manager Mikel Arteta and interim sporting director Jason Ayto continue their pursuit of a capable number nine.

Arsenal scouring January market for new striker

Last week, Arteta confirmed to the media that Arsenal are indeed actively looking for a striker, following Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending ACL injury.

These blows have left Arteta with gaping holes up front that need to be shored up, prompting reports that Arsenal have shortlisted many high-profile strikers for potential transfers before deadline day on February 3.

Arsenal are reportedly very keen on Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic, with some reports suggesting that they’ve already had a loan bid rejected. Meanwhile, it is believed by other media sources that RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is a top target for Arteta and Sporting Lisbon sensation Viktor Gyokeres remains on Arsenal’s radar.

That being said, all three of the aforementioned centre-forwards would likely come at a premium, as Leipzig, Sporting and Juve certainly won’t be keen on losing their chief goalscorers midway through 2024/2025.

There are cheaper alternatives, though, like Marseille’s Elye Wahi – who could leave the Ligue 1 side for as little as £25 million.

Wahi hasn’t exactly been a dream signing for Roberto De Zerbi across the channel, but he did score 19 goals in 33 French top-flight matches for Montpellier during his best season in 2022/2023.

Alongside the Frenchman, another striker who could leave for a fairly decent transfer fee is Botafogo’s Igor Jesus.

Arsenal join race to sign Igor Jesus with informal talks held

As per Diario AS reporter Eduardo Burgos, Arsenal have held “informal” talks over signing Jesus from Botafogo after joining the race for his signature.

The 23-year-old earned his first caps for Brazil at the back end of last year, joining Botafogo last year off the back of some prolific seasons in the UAE League with Shabab Al-Ahli.

Jesus bagged 34 goals and 16 assists over 66 appearances for the Arab outfit, since going on to become one of Botafogo’s star attackers. The South American averages more shots at goal per 90 than any other player in their squad (WhoScored), registering five goals and three assists in the Brazilian top flight so far this term.

As well as this, it is believed his price tag stands at around £30 million.

Sit in the pub and pray for rain in Manchester. That, according to Matthew Wade, is Birmingham Phoenix’s plan for the rest of the Hundred, after they were left on the brink of elimination despite completing a one-wicket win against London Spirit at Lord’s on Tuesday night.Phoenix needed to chase their target of 140 in 73 balls or fewer in order to overtake Spirit on net run rate and seal a spot in the knockout stages. Promoted to No. 3, Wade hit 81 off 42 balls but struggled for support from his team-mates, and Phoenix will only qualify if Manchester Originals tie with Oval Invincibles on Wednesday evening, or if the game finishes as a no-result.”We won a game of cricket,” Wade said. “We’re five [wins] and three [defeats]. We’ve given ourselves a chance, I suppose you could say. We’ll hope for a draw or a washout and we’ll go through.”We knew coming in that it was, like, 43 runs or 28 balls to spare that we had to win with. That’s over a quarter of the game, so we knew it was going to be tough. We were hoping that two blokes got going with the bat and we could chase it down but it didn’t happen. So we’ll just go and sit at the pub and watch the game.”Related

Spirit needed to restrict Phoenix to 103 or fewer to leapfrog Trent Rockets and seal automatic qualification for Saturday’s final and looked in with a chance of doing so when they reduced them to 95 for 7, but will instead play in Friday night’s eliminator.”That [figure] was always in our mind, especially with early wickets, but Matthew Wade played an excellent innings,” Ravi Bopara, Spirit’s top-scorer, said. “He took it away from us a little bit. It is what it is and at least we’re through to the next round.”The boys were walking off there and saying ‘what a weird feeling that was’. We were happy because we’ve gone through, but walking off, you’ve lost the game. Weird.”Wade said that Phoenix’s heavy home defeats against Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers are likely to be the results that cost them. “We knew after the other night that we’d cost ourselves and it was going to hurt come the back end today,” he said.”We went out and tried to chase them early. It didn’t happen and we kind of reverted to winning the game. We won a game of cricket and that’s all you can look at. It’s not tonight that was the problem; it was the games when we got blown out of the water at Edgbaston.”He also threw his support behind the Hundred’s format, suggesting that other countries should look to implement the format in their domestic competitions. “I’ve absolutely loved it,” he said. “It’s something that all countries should look at down the line.”In Australia, [in the BBL], we have a four-over powerplay and the Power Surge and it just feels like this is a condensed game of T20. It’s a more structured format, I feel. [Games] start a little bit earlier and a lot of kids come in. My kids have had no interest in cricket until I’ve got over here and now they’ve loved it.”My daughter is collecting Hundred [trading] cards and they’ve just embraced the atmosphere of the Hundred, which is something that has really opened my eyes. Hopefully a lot of countries around the world look at this format because it feels like with the time that it’s played in and the format, it’s something that everyone who comes and has a look at it or plays it seems to fall in love with.”Wade will briefly return home after the tournament before his focus turns to the T20 World Cup, as Australia prepare to defend the title they won in the UAE last year.”I’ll sneak home if we don’t qualify and get a few more days at home, which is nice. I’ll get probably eight or ten days at home and then we go to India for three T20s and then back to Australia for six more before the World Cup.”That’s the game we play at the moment. It’s a truly international game at the moment with all these leagues coming out, and international cricket on top of that. It’s just part of the job. I’ll saddle up and hopefully we can defend the World Cup.”

Chelsea plan January move for £80m forward in the coming hours after talks

Chelsea are planning to move for a marquee forward imminently after January discussions, with manager Enzo Maresca still on the hunt for a fresh attacking option after missing out on key targets.

Christopher Nkunku is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester United, with the Frenchman reliably believed to be in search of a new landing spot as he seeks more regular game time.

Nkunku has already agreed personal terms with Bayern, but in the last week, serious talk has come to light that Chelsea could use United’s interest in the 27-year-old to initiate talks over signing Ruben Amorim’s star winger Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentina international has been repeatedly linked with a move away this month, with Napoli having a £42 million bid rejected for Garnacho.

Chelsea are looking to take advantage of Garnacho’s potential availability to strengthen Maresca’s wide players, considering Mykhailo Mudryk’s recent ban as a result of the Ukranian’s failed drug test, not to mention a serious possibility that the versatile Nkunku could depart.

While Chelsea are still believed to be pursing Bayern’s Mathys Tel, the Frenchman has an array of other Premier League suitors, so it appears the Stamford Bridge hierarchy remain in pursuit of Garnacho as an alternative.

Chelsea to move for Alejandro Garnacho "in the coming hours"

According to L’Equipe reporter Loic Tanzi, Chelsea chiefs plan to make a return for Garnacho “in the coming hours”, following discussions which have spanned several days.

That being said, United will demand around £80 million to let him go this late in the window, which is nearly what Napoli bid earlier in January. However, if Nkunku leaves, Tanzi writes that Chelsea will have money to reinvest in the signing of Garnacho from Old Trafford.

Garnacho

The South American, who’s bagged eight goals and five assists in 34 appearances across all competitions, could be a wonderful option for Chelsea – considering both his age, potential and already-proven output in England.

Ex-Man United defender Raphael Varane, speaking back in 2023, also called Garnacho a potential game-changing player who can really make a difference.

“They have great talent,” said Varane on Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri.

“They can bring speed on the pitch, create opportunities and create danger. We need these kind of players to make the difference and change games.”
