Celtic are back in action once again in the Scottish Premiership at lunchtime today as they prepare to travel away to Dundee United in the early kick-off.

Despite this being his fifth season in charge of the Hoops, over two spells, this is Brendan Rodgers’s first visit to Tannadice Park, and he will be hoping that it is a successful one.

The Premiership champions come into this match off the back of winning the League Cup at Hampden Park on penalties against Rangers last weekend.

Rodgers could look to make some alterations to the starting XI that lined up at the national stadium, including dropping Reo Hatate from the team.

Why Reo Hatate should be dropped

The Japan international was selected to start the final and lined up in midfield next to captain Callum McGregor and summer signing Paulo Bernardo.

Unfortunately, however, the experienced central midfielder failed to show the best version of himself at Hampden Park, as his performance was rewarded with a 6/10 player rating by the Daily Record, who wrote that he ‘struggled to exert himself’ in the game.

Football FanCast then published an article explaining why the Celtic star should be brutally ditched from the starting XI next time out, as his lacklustre play in the middle of the park has left him open to being dropped.

Hatate, who has only contributed with one goal and zero assists in his last nine appearances for club and country across all competitions, should now be taken out of the team after a disappointing showing in the final.

Why Luke McCowan should start for Celtic

The Scottish dynamo was ineligible to feature in the final, as he had played for Dundee in an earlier round, but should now return to the line-up after missing out completely last weekend.

Celtic signed the left-footed whiz, who was described as a “game winner” by Marvin Bartley, from Dundee in the summer transfer window as an experienced Premiership operator, and it has been a terrific piece of business to date.

McCowan has started two of the club’s last three league matches and contributed with one goal and three assists from the middle of the park – more goal contributions than Hatate has managed in his last nine outings for club and country.

As you can see in the table above, the Hoops star has been incredibly productive in the final third despite only starting half of his appearances in the division.

This speaks to the quality he can provide in the middle of the park as a plug-and-play star who does not need regular game time to be dropped into the team and expected to deliver.

Therefore, Rodgers must unleash McCowan from the start to provide an injection of attacking quality ahead of Hatate, who has struggled in that regard of late.

They’ve been given encouragement by recent wins against Brentford, Southampton, City and RB Leipzig in the Champions League over this past month, but it’s clear they’re far from the finished article, despite finishing in the top four last season.

Emery says that they could use January as an opportunity to strengthen their ranks, and Villa are “moving forward” in pursuit of potential targets.

“We are starting the New Year, and we finished a fantastic 2024,” said Emery in his press conference on Friday.

“We achieved our best objective we can dream in that moment, to be in Europe and to be in [the] Champions League and this year to be playing Champions League.

“Now, we are starting the new year focused on our match against Leicester, starting at home at Villa Park. We did a very good year, but trying to separate last year, last season and this season. The first part of the season, we are really not thinking we are bad, but could be better, and the league is our priority.

“Of course, we are in the transfer window as well, and the club is moving forward to try to increase our level in the squad in case we can sign new players and in case someone has to leave, we are open to doing it. But the most important for me is the match tomorrow.”

Indeed, as relayed by media outlet Villa News, V Sports (the holding company which owns the club) has a direct link with Vissel Kobe as one of the sides under their portfolio, and this could help to facilitate a move for Miyashiro.

VN state that Villa are in talks over signing Miyashiro for Emery, and it is certainly worth noting that the Japanese forward is out of contract at the end of this month, according to Transfermarkt.

The 24-year-old scored 11 goals last year and may well come as a potential replacement for the exit-bound Jaden Philogene.

Everton eyeing new midfielders for Moyes

Back in December, it was reported that two of Sean Dyche’s main aims in the January transfer window were to bring in a new right-back and winger, meaning they are still likely to be considered priority positions under the helm of new manager David Moyes.

However, the Toffees clearly feel signing a new central midfielder could aid their survival chances this season, as they are now in talks over a deal for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jakub Moder, who has found game time difficult to come by for the Seagulls.

Newcastle Untied’s Sean Langstaff has also been identified as a January target, with the 27-year-old now in line to become Moyes’ first signing.

The Merseyside club have been looking at midfielders since the summer, and at one point they were targeting Palmeiras’ Ricardo Rios, but the Colombian ultimately ended up remaining in Brazil.

Now, however, there has been a development in Everton’s pursuit of Rios, with Caught Offside reporting they are pushing hard to get a deal over the line in the January transfer window.

It is unclear how much Palmeiras would be looking to receive for the 24-year-old, but there is a €100m (£83m) release clause in his contract, so he is unlikely to come cheap, especially considering he has just put pen to paper on a new deal.

Interest from elsewhere could also drive the midfielder’s price up, with Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest also in the running for his signature, having been impressed with his consistency in the Brazilian Serie A.

What Rios could offer Everton

Scout Ben Mattinson has previously given an overview of what type of player the Colombia international is.

Back in the summer, Mattinson also explained that the central midfielder has “sky high potential”, but wasn’t ready for a big move due to a lack of experience.

However, the former Flamengo man continued to impress last season, being ranked as the fifth-best performing player in the Palmeiras squad by WhoScored, and he places in the 89th percentile for tackles per 90 over the past year, compared to his positional peers in similar leagues.

It would be a risk to sign Rios, given that he is unproven outside Brazil, but his performances last season indicate it could be a gamble worth taking assuming that release clause number is whittled down, as Moyes looks to steer Everton to safety.
