Wolves want rid of £35m youngster they thought would be their next Neves

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a habit of signing Portuguese players in recent years. Some, like the signings of Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto, proved to be resounding successes. All three enjoyed stellar careers at Molineux before moving on to pastures new.

Others, however, like the signings of Silvio, Ruben Vinagre, Francisco Trincao and Goncalo Guedes, didn’t work out, or haven’t worked out, quite so well.

Goncalo Guedes for Wolves

Guedes’ time in the West Midlands has been particularly underwhelming. Since completing a £27.5 million move to Wolves from Valencia in 2022, he’s made just 25 appearances for the club, spending the majority of the last two seasons out on-loan, first with his boyhood club Benfica and then with Villarreal.

He’s now back at Molineux, but according to recent reports from Spain, the 27-year-old, who earns a whopping £90,000 per-week, wants to leave Wolves as soon as possible, with Villarreal among the potential takers.

Fabio Silva transfer update

Another of Wolves’ Portuguese flops who could soon be on his way out of the club is Fabio Silva. The 22-year-old striker joined Wolves from FC Porto for a club record fee of £35 million, but his time with the Wanderers has been nothing short of a disaster. In 73 games for the club, he’s scored just five goals and has been loaned out on four separate occasions.

Currently, he resides in Spain with La Liga side Las Palmas, with whom he signed a one-year loan deal in the summer. Though he’s enjoyed a slight upturn in form in Gran Canaria, scoring three goals in nine games, according to Molineux News, Wolves have no interest in seeing him return to Molineux.

The publication reports that the club “want him off the wage bill” regardless of whether his form for Las Palmas continues, and that there are a number of clubs in Spain and Portugal that would be willing to take him on next year.

The next Neves? Not so much…

Big things were expected from Silva following his record move from Porto, with Wolves chairman Jeff Shi comparing his signing to that of Ruben Neves, who also joined from Porto five years prior.

“The timing of this deal is similar to the timing of when we bought Ruben Neves; we’ve waited for the right time to get a high-quality player at the right price,” said Shi.

On Silva’s supposed quality, Shi said: “Fabio has the potential to be a generational talent and for us to see him develop under Nuno is very exciting. He is the type of player our fans will love.”

Fabio Silva

It’s safe to say that Silva has not lived up to Shi’s words, both in terms of being compared to Neves, who is widely regarded as one of Wolves’ best-ever players, or being loved by the fans.

Earlier this year, Molineux News named Silva as Wolves’ worst signing of the Fosun era, describing him as a “failure”.

Tom Harrison denies he is 'clinging on for grim death' as ECB chief executive

ECB boss insists he will walk away when the time is right, as English cricket grapples with crises on and off field

Tom Harrison has denied that he is “clinging on for grim death” amid a wave of post-Ashes sackings, and insists that he will walk away from his role as chief executive when the time is right, as the ECB grapples with a succession of crises, both on and off the field.Harrison, who has been in his role since 2015, was instrumental in securing the £1.1 billion rights deal with Sky and the BBC in 2017, and also oversaw the structures that enabled England’s white-ball team to become World Cup winners in 2019.He was credited, too, for keeping English cricket solvent during the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020, when the successful hosting of England men’s home-summer series against West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and Australia helped to mitigate the board’s multi-million pound losses. However, more recently, Harrison has come under intense pressure for his handling of the racism scandal that has engulfed English cricket since Azeem Rafiq’s revelations at Yorkshire, including a succession of unconvincing appearances before Parliament’s DCMS select committee. The fall-out from the Ashes has intensified the scrutiny as well, particularly in light of Harrison’s call for a “red-ball reset” in response to the declining standards of the Test team. As one of the primary advocates of the Hundred, the ECB’s new competition that took place in the prime summer months of July and August last summer while forcing the County Championship ever further into the margins of the season, many critics doubt whether he is the right man to oversee that change of priority.Other mis-steps include the ECB’s unilateral cancellation of England’s goodwill T20I tour of Pakistan in October – a trip that would have been England’s first to the country since 2005, and which was a factor in the subsequent resignation of Ian Watmore as chair – and the awarding of a £2.1 million bonus pool for the board senior executives off the back of the Hundred’s launch. The pay-out for that bonus scheme is anticipated in April, and comes in spite of the extensive round of redundancies that the ECB underwent last year in the wake of the pandemic.”I’d like not to be seen to be running away from the challenge of addressing the issues,” Harrison said in a press conference at Lord’s, as he and Andrew Strauss, the interim England director, addressed England’s preparations for this month’s tour of West Indies, which include the retention of Joe Root as captain, but the removal of Graham Thorpe as assistant coach – the third sacking in as many days following the departures of Ashley Giles and Chris Silverwood.”We’re in a particular moment, we’re looking for an interim coach, we have an interim chair, we’re looking for a full-time chair. We’ve got a lot of discussions underway,” Harrison said. “This is a moment where I think I have the support of the board and it is a very tough moment. And honestly, the toughest moment that I’ve experienced in my career, but I’m not running away.Related

When faultlines are too exposed, there's no easy way to rebuild after an earthquake

“I just feel that I have to keep going. I want to take English cricket back to a place where there’s some stability, there’s some calmness, frankly, and a sense that we are heading in the right direction.”England’s 4-0 Ashes loss was the culmination of a terrible 12 months for England’s Test team, which has now lost 10 of its last 14 matches with a solitary win over India at Headingley. But Harrison was insistent that English cricket’s achievements in 2021 – including record crowds for domestic women’s matches during the first season of the Hundred – were still worth celebrating.”I know we had a terrible Test summer and no one’s trying to disguise that, but the incredible growth in the women’s game, the impact of the Hundred, going back on free-to-air television and 16 million people seeing a tournament and viewing figures being the best they’ve ever had for Test cricket and for white-ball cricket … there is an awful lot to be building on.”I know that’s not something to be talking about in the wake of an Ashes defeat and we do have to reflect hard on what happened. But I’m not clinging on for grim death, that is not what I’m doing.”I’m doing this because I think it’s the right thing for English cricket right now. And as soon as that is not the case, you will not have to push me.”

"Great" manager top target for Everton but he wants guarantees on signings

As The Freidkin Group continue to prepare for their arrival, the prospective new Everton owners have reportedly identified an 11-trophy manager as their new top target to replace Sean Dyche.

Everton transfer news

Whilst the Toffees remain outside of the Premier League relegation zone, it hasn’t exactly been a season in which they’ve set the world alight once again. In fact, their 0-0 draw against Brentford last time out just about summed things up for Dyche’s side in front of the Goodison Park faithful, who are desperate for more than just a team that avoids the dropzone.

Those in Merseyside will be hoping that prospective new owners The Friedkin Group will be able to finally match their ambitions to take the club back into the top half of the Premier League.

If recent rumours are anything to go by too, then that show of ambition could start with replacing Dyche in the technical area. Names such as David Moyes and even Jose Mourinho have been mentioned alongside the job, but neither of those experienced managers reportedly sit top of Friedkin’s shortlist.

Instead, according to TeamTalk, The Friedkin Group now want to appoint Sergio Conceicao at Everton, who has emerged to become the new owners’ top target to replace Dyche.

Everton need to sell a star who Richarlison thought was "like Ronaldo"

Regardless of Sean Dyche’s fate, this Everton star needs to be sold in January.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 27, 2024

They’ll have to put together a convincing pitch, however, given that the former Porto boss reportedly wants a guarantee of signings and he’s coming off the back of such a successful spell in Portugal – winning 11 trophies whilst at Porto.

A serial winner, there’s no doubt that Conceicao would be an impressive option and certainly one that matches Everton’s newfound ambition, but the ball may be in his court rather than Friedkin’s if they push to secure his signature when they arrive.

"Great" Conceicao would be statement appointment

The most successful manager in Porto’s history on the trophy front, Everton would be making quite the statement by appointing Conceicao. however, Friedkin must also deliver a follow-up in the form of fresh faces. If the new owners want to get the best version of the former Porto boss, then handing him a side capable of matching his style would be the key to the ultimate success.

After the 50-year-old was linked with AC Milan last summer, former England boss Fabio Capello praised Conceicao via Sempremilan, saying: “He knows Serie A from his past as a footballer: he played and won here, this can certainly help him manage the pressure of the environment.

“As a coach he has done very, very well at Porto, demonstrating great tactical and attacking attention. His teams are solid and balanced, we saw it in the Champions League: when the Italians met Porto they often suffered.”

The Everton job is by no means a simple role, and Dyche deserves great credit for how he’s kept the Toffees afloat amid endless issues away from the pitch. But as a new era begins, Friedkin could show fresh ambition and chase Conceicao’s signature.

He’s like Saka: Arsenal line up move for "England’s next superstar"

A few weeks ago you’d have said that Arsenal needed to throw the kitchen sink at strengthening their squad in the January transfer window.

The Gunners were sinking without a trace and had plenty of issues in the squad. Those, however, largely came about as a result of several injuries.

Chief among them was Martin Odegaard’s absence. The captain missed 12 matches due to an ankle injury but since his return to the starting lineup against Chelsea a few weeks ago, Mikel Arteta’s men are now back in form.

Since the last international break, Arsenal have scored 13 goals in three games, evoking memories of that remarkable run at the beginning of the year when the Londoners scored 21 goals across consecutive league matches with West Ham, Burnley, Newcastle and Sheffield United.

So, are new recruits in January still necessary? Certainly.

Arsenal looking to sign Bundesliga winger

If there is one area of the Arsenal squad that could still do with more depth it’s in the wide areas.

That was a problem area during the summer window but until the 11th hour, they decided not to do any business.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

A market opportunity came about as a result of Chelsea’s inflated squad. Raheem Sterling was available on loan, and having been a player who’s worked with Arteta before, the Gunners were happy to bring him in.

You sense that Sterling’s long-term future does not lie at the Emirates Stadium and reports ahead of January suggesting Arsenal could sign a new winger only substantiate that claim further.

According to reports from Sky Germany this weekend, Borussia Dortmund forward Jamie Gittens is on the radar of several teams including the Gunners.

It’s reported that they are not alone in their pursuit of the Englishman who has also attracted the interest of Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

What makes Gittens so special

A former product of the Chelsea and Manchester City youth academies, Gittens has followed the Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho route to stardom by trading English football for the Bundesliga.

It’s safe to say that’s been a phenomenal decision as the young 20-year-old is making waves during what has been a real breakout season at Dortmund, starring not just in domestic action but in the Champions League too.

Gittens has already scored eight goals and supplied four assists this term with four of those goals coming on the biggest of continental stages.

Perhaps most impressive was his performance against champions Real Madrid. The German side may have lost 5-2 but the English wonderkid was a rare bright spark.

So, what could “England’s next superstar” – as he was dubbed by one German outlet – offer the Arsenal team?

Predominantly a right-footed left winger, he would provide fine competition for the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.

In truth, he could be a far more explosive asset than the Belgian in particular, with Gittens possessing a Bukayo Saka-like ability to make something happen out of nothing. Here’s how the two compare in league action this season.

So, there are some key differences here. Saka has been one of the best creators in European football this term – registering a ridiculously high number of assists per 90 minutes.

While Gittens doesn’t perhaps have that level of creativity just yet, like his fellow countryman, he’s an elite-level ball carrier. The very fact he ranks within the top 5% of positionally similar players in the Champions League this term of successful take-ons says it all.

One area they are particularly alike is their ability to press and win the ball back, attempting a very similar number of tackles from the flanks.

Gittens is, of course, still very raw but all of the foundations are there for the English talent to blossom into a Saka-like winger, albeit from the opposite flank. This would be a very exciting signing for Arsenal if they could pull it off.

Not just Saka: £27m star is becoming one of the best in Arsenal's history

One of Mikel Arteta’s signings is fast becoming one of the best players we’ve ever seen at Arsenal.

Mark Wood out of West Indies tour, IPL 2022 with elbow injury

Mark Wood, the England fast bowler, will not take part in IPL 2022 for Lucknow Super Giants, and will miss the remainder of England’s Test tour of the Caribbean, after picking up a right elbow injury during the first Test against West Indies in North Sound last week. The ECB said in a statement Wood “will return to the UK next week for a specialist opinion regarding the management of his injury” and “will have an indefinite break from cricket until more information is determined from the elbow specialist”. The team management will decide whether a replacement is required, with the third Test in Grenada due to begin on March 24. Warwickshire’s Liam Norwell is the likely addition.*Super Giants are yet to identify a replacement in their squad. Wood had been picked by them for INR 7.5 crore (USD 1 million approx.) at the mega IPL auction in February. His participation in the IPL became doubtful once he had walked out of the drawn first Test last week after delivering just 17 overs because of an impingement in his right elbow. Wood, who had managed to bowl just five overs on the third morning before exiting the field, had attempted to take a fitness test – bowling six deliveries in the nets – before the start of play on the fifth day, but suffered “acute pain”.The nature of the injury is a major worry for Wood, given that his fellow 90mph-plus fast bowler, Jofra Archer, has been out of action for 12 months while undergoing two elbow operations to remedy a stress fracture of his own right elbow. Wood was England’s outstanding performer in their 4-0 Ashes defeat, where he claimed 17 wickets at 26.64, including a career-best 6 for 37 in the fifth Test at Hobart. He featured in five Tests in the winter just gone, the heaviest workload of his England career. For Super Giants, the loss of Wood is bound to heavily disrupt their plans, given the limited overseas options in their squad. West Indies allrounder Jason Holder, Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis and Sri Lanka quick Dushmantha Chameera are the other overseas fast bowlers on their roster, but Holder and Stoinis will miss the start of their campaign given West Indies and Australia are engaged in bilateral series against England and Pakistan respectively.West Indies’ Test series against England is scheduled to finish only on March 28 – the day of Super Giants’ first match, against fellow debutants Gujarat Titans. Australia’s white-ball series against Pakistan runs into the first week of April.Chameera had missed the two-match India Test series recently due to an ankle injury, but has recovered and is available for selection. The other overseas players on Super Giants’ roster are Quinton de Kock, Evin Lewis and Kyle Mayers – Mayers is currently part of West Indies’ squad for the second Test against England.*
