Tom Wagner: Net worth, Birmingham takeover, age, wife, Tom Brady & more

Tom Wagner has been the Birmingham City chairman since 2023 and is looking to bring the good times back to the Blues, starting with promotion back to the Championship after relegation to League One last season.

Under Wagner, Birmingham have splashed the cash, brought in a new manager in Chris Davies and are looking at leaving St Andrew’s for a new purpose-built 60,000+ capacity stadium by 2029.

They’ve also got NFL icon Tom Brady on board in the Midlands, making it an exciting time to be a Birmingham supporter. But who actually is Wagner? Football FanCast has compiled a fact file on the American businessman.

Birmingham's "unique" loan star has seen value soar by £10m since leaving

This former Birmingham City loanee has seen his value shoot up since leaving St. Andrew’s.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 6, 2024 Who is Tom Wagner?

Wagner is an American financier who co-founded Knighthead Capital Management LLC in 2008 along with business partner Ara Cohen. He is also the New York-based firm’s co-CEO and manages about €9bn (£7.5bn) of assets.

A subsidiary of Knighthead Investment set up a company last year called Shelby Companies Limited, registered in Birmingham. Wagner is also listed as a director of that company.

Tom Wagner's Birmingham City takeover

Shelby Companies Limited completed a 45.98% ownership of Birmingham City in July 2023, with Wagner saying at the time:

“The transition and implementation plans will take time. There will be bumps in the road but I ask that you get behind the leadership team guiding the club forward, be part of the alliance and continue to give every team that wears the shirt your passionate support.”

SCL later took full ownership of St Andrew’s. Birmingham were run by Chinese owners prior to the takeover.

Tom Wagner's links to Tom Brady

Brady was announced as a minority owner of Birmingham City in August 2023, weeks after SCL purchased their stake in the club. But how do Wagner and Brady know each other?

The Americans have reportedly been friends for a number of years and have worked on other projects before their time with Birmingham. Last year, Wagner, Brady and tennis ace Kim Clijsters invested in a major league pickleball team, and they have recently been approved by NFL owners to buy a 10% stake in the Las Vegas Raiders.

Tom Wagner and Tom Brady's net worth

Wagner’s personal net worth is thought to be around $1.6bn (£1.34bn), while NFL icon Brady is said to be worth around $300m (£252m).

Tom Wagner personal life

Wagner, who is 55 years of age, keeps his personal life away from the media, but he is reportedly married and has two children. In 1992, Wagner completed an undergraduate study at Villanova University where he received a degree in accounting.

Tom Wagner's previous jobs

Prior to co-founding Knighthead Capital Management, Wagner worked at Goldman Sachs, where he was a managing director.

Wagner has also previously been employed by investment banking affiliate Credit Suisse First Boston and accounting company Ernst & Young.

West Indies batters steady after Permaul, Warrican give them nine-wicket morning

West Indies end the rain-hit second day on 69 for 1 after bowling Sri Lanka out for 204

Rain allowed for just half a day’s play on the second day of the second and final Test in Galle, but West Indies took big strides towards squaring the series in that short time. Following a morning session that brought nine Sri Lankan wickets for just 91 runs, West Indies came up with a solid batting display after lunch, bringing the gap to 135 runs for the loss of only Jermaine Blackwood’s wicket before the rain came. Kraig Brathwaite was unbeaten on 22 off 77 deliveries, and alongside him was Nkrumah Bonner on 1.In an, albeit brief, afternoon session largely devoid of any genuinely pulse-racing action, it was only Blackwood’s dismissal – and his subsequent poorly judged review for an lbw off a Praveen Jayawickrama arm ball – as well as an unsuccessful review from the hosts a short while later against Brathwaite, that brought momentary excitement. This was largely down to the fact that neither Blackwood nor Brathwaite were compelled to take any undue risks, and, as a result, neither was really tested. Both looked relatively at ease throughout their stay – whether moving deep into the crease to counter the turn late or planting a big front foot to get to the pitch – but notably steered clear of the sweeps and sauntering down the pitch that had been a hallmark of the Sri Lankan innings earlier. This meant that they were content to wait for the bad balls – primarily ones pitched too short – to score boundaries, though it was really only Blackwood that showed any semblance of positive intent in that regard. His 99-ball 44 came with five fours. The Sri Lankan spinners, for their part, struggled to get the same purchase off the pitch that the likes of Jomel Warrican and Veerasammy Permaul, who finished with career-best figures of 5 for 35, had extracted so effortlessly earlier in the day. Indeed, perhaps buoyed by what they had seen in the morning, the Sri Lankan spinners were arguably a little too eager. On several occasions, they strayed too full, while on others they erred on the shorter side. On the occasions that they did find their lengths, the West Indian batters were coaxed into false strokes, which in the end brought about Blackwood’s wicket. The general pared back nature of that session was in stark contrast to the morning session, when Warrican and Permaul had run riot. They were adroit with their lines and lengths, and Warrican in particular varied his pace and trajectory well to prevent the batters from settling down. Permaul was the epitome of discipline, with probing, consistent lines – mixed in with the odd arm ball – that would have done even the finest exponents of left-arm spin proud. After some brief early resistance from the batters, Warrican was rewarded when he induced Oshada Fernando into edging a cut to Joshua Da Silva behind the stumps. Oshada’s overnight partner, Pathum Nissanka, was the next to go, trapped plumb in front courtesy a Permaul arm ball. There was no partnership of note after that, as Warrican and Permaul ran through the line-up, picking up a wicket nearly every other over – though Charith Asalanka’s reverse sweep to score his first runs in Test cricket will certainly be remembered fondly. To compound matters for Sri Lanka, Angelo Mathews was forced to retire hurt, with what has now been confirmed as a thigh strain. While he is almost certainly not going to bowl in this game – he was due to open the bowling alongside Sri Lanka’s only other seamer, Suranga Lakmal – he showed that he could be called upon with the bat if needed. He returned to the crease towards the end of the innings, and proceeded to launch some big blows to take Sri Lanka beyond the 200 mark, before receiving an absolute ripper from Warrican that zipped past his forward defence to knock back middle stump and bring the innings to an end.

GIOVANNI TRABALHA!

Game-changing sub: Ange could unearth his own Duran in Spurs youngster

Tottenham Hotspur scored a statement victory on Wednesday, knocking Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup and advancing to the quarter-finals.

It was an excellent performance, but one which must be followed with victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, because the form has been patchy for Ange Postecoglou’s side in 2024/25.

It was a step in the right direction. Tottenham’s trophy hoodoo is a much-ridiculed fact within English football, but Postecoglou is a driven and successful manager and understands the gravity of succeeding in a cup competition.

Even so, Spurs are eighth in the Premier League with four wins from nine matches. They are five points behind Sunday’s visitors.

Defeat is inconceivable. A draw is undesirable. Victory is imperative for Postecoglou’s squad, who must start to make headway before the November international break. Sadly, injuries have compounded the issue.

Tottenham team news

The big one. Micky van de Ven is sidelined after injuring his hamstring against Pep Guardiola’s side in midweek. The dynamic Dutchman is not expected back until after the international break.

This troubling news is aggravated by a possible injury to his central defensive partner Cristian Romero, with Postecoglou claiming that the Argentine was “a bit sore” after the Carabao Cup clash but that there’s a decent chance that he will be handed a starting berth against the Villans. Here’s hoping.

Djed Spence and Wilson Odobert are still out of action, but Heung-min Son could be in line to return after sitting out for six of the past seven fixtures in all competitions with muscular issues.

This defensive conundrum is something to be concerned by, with Villa one of the finest attacking outfits in England. The danger is heightened through Jhon Duran, who’s bound to be unleashed like a ravenous bloodhound after the interval.

Spurs need to contain Jhon Duran

If Romero is, indeed, unable to make the starting cut, Radu Dragusin will likely be partnered with veteran Ben Davies in central defence.

It’s not been the finest start to the season for Dragusin but he’s still a high-breed defensive talent. He will, however, have to contend with Ollie Watkins and, later into the affair, Duran.

Duran is a monstrous forward, having racked up eight goals from 14 matches under Unai Emery this term. Remarkably, the Colombian has only started three games, with five of his goals posted off the bench.

What a talent. Postecoglou will no doubt have a plan to silence the young buck, but of course, will need to rally every inch of his Lilywhite resources to effectively execute the plan.

One such route might be relying on his tried-and-tested frontline. Changing tack, sinking, dropping, and shelling into a defensive approach is something that runs counter to Spurs’ identity, and is a course of action that Postecoglou simply won’t enforce.

Jhon Duran and Leon Bailey

Instead, Tottenham must ensure that they produce slick and stylish attacking forward, flowing through phases and harnessing the purple patch of Brennan Johnson, Son’s everlasting prolificness, James Maddison’s creativity, Dejan Kulusevski’s new-found strength in a complete role.

And if the match drags into the second half with the scores level, or the away side even – unthinkably – ahead on the scoreboard, Postecoglou might find that he actually has his own version of Duran – Mikey Moore can be the second-half substitute to silence the Villa crowd.

Mikey Moore could be Ange's own Jhon Duran

Maddison recently praised Moore for his “young, fearless mentality,” with the 17-year-old making his name known down N17 after slotting into Postecoglou’s senior set-up this season.

Tottenham teenager Mikey Moore

Last time out, he was handed his maiden starting berth in the Premier League, albeit proving to be ineffective as Tottenham were dismally defeated at Selhurst Park, with hitherto winless Crystal Palace stabbing another setback into the north Londoners’ campaign.

The youngster tried hard across his 62 minutes of action but failed to take a shot or complete a key pass, as well as failing with each of his three attempted dribbles and winning only three of his nine contested duels, as per Sofascore.

Even so, Moore is an elite-level talent, hailed as a “superstar” by renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano. He has dazzled for Tottenham in the Europa League this year, having also scored 16 goals and supplied nine assists across 14 matches for Tottenham’s youth team last season.

Moore’s fleet-footed style, all balletic grace as he capers up the field, suggests that, for now, he’s best served in a substitute role, perhaps emulating that of Tottenham’s upcoming opponent Duran.

Moore is a strong and combative forward to be sure, but he hasn’t grown into his skin yet and runs the risk of failing to win duels if unleashed from the outset.

Duran’s brilliance comes from his electric pace and ability to overwhelm tired legs. No player wants to be a ‘super sub’, but Duran is one of the finest in Premier League history and operates in a role that maximises his qualities, explosive quality over quantity, as it were.

Tottenham’s prodigious talent has been a regular feature throughout their continental campaign, notably attempting seven dribbles and winning six duels during a slender victory over Ferencvaros last month.

For his efforts, football.london’s Alasdair Gold bestowed upon him an 8/10 match rating, praising his problematic presence against the Hungarians; he was involved in the opening goal and looked like a real menace each time he collected the ball.

Last week, the versatile winger was awarded his club’s Player of the Match after another emphatic display in the Europa League, this time against AZ Alkmaar.

Duran is almost certainly going to be introduced at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the hour mark, but in Moore, the hosts might find that they have a secret weapon of their own.

With a style that crackles with energy and a tenacious approach to his football, he might just pop up with a big moment to ensure that Tottenham narrow the gap between them and Villa and start to make progress in the pursuit of Champions League football.

Spurs thought they'd signed the new Paul Gascoigne, then he left for free

The talented attacker never lived up to his potential at Spurs.

No Hazlewood, no worries with Green cherry-ripe

Hazlewood won’t play on Boxing Day but Cameron Green emergence as a like-for-like replacement has caused England captain Joe Root problems

Josh Hazlewood won’t play in the Boxing Day Test and there might have been a time when the sight of their big quick standing at the back of the nets not participating in training would have been a cause for concern for Australia. But Cameron Green’s emergence in this series as a bona fide Test bowler, who has earned his place as a top-six batter, has completely changed the dynamics for this Australian team and given the selectors confidence to not rush any of their big quicks back from injury.Hazlewood’s side strain needs more time, but the other quicks looked in fine fettle at the MCG nets on Christmas Eve with Mitchell Starc bowling superbly and showing no signs of the rib issue that flared while batting in Adelaide. With Pat Cummins set to return, Jhye Richardson looks on track to keep his place following his five-wicket haul which means Michael Neser is likely to miss out.Green was hardly used on the final day in Adelaide with Australia’s stand-in captain Steven Smith revealing that team management had suggested Smith avoid bowling him for workload reasons although Smith did turn to him late in the day as England’s resistance lingered longer than expected.Related

But Green said he was ready to go if called upon and is feeling fine in the lead-up to Boxing Day.”I was completely fine and ready to go,” Green said. “It’s just we’re in a really good position. I think Nathan Lyon was bowling beautifully from one end, and then we’ve got three world-class pace bowlers to choose from so I wasn’t really required.”I think they just thought we could probably get through the game without bowling me. And then keep me even more fresh for this game.”Green talked about himself as Australia’s fifth bowler who is just there to “keep it tight at my end and give the other guys a bit of a spell.” But’s he’s been far more than that in this series so far. In Hazlewood’s absence, he has become Joe Root’s nemesis. Hazlewood has dismissed Root 8 times in Test cricket, more than any other bowler in the world.Since Hazlewood’s side strain, Green has stepped as Australia’s most like-for-like replacement to knock over Root twice in three innings, with Green’s extra height and bounce, much like Hazlewood, causing the England captain problems.”I’ve played two poor shots to him,” Root said of his dismissals to Green. “The one thing that he brings to the table is that extra bit of bounce.”The danger we get sucked into in these conditions is it doesn’t do as much as it does in England. So you feel like you can play at balls more frequently and you end up getting sucked into playing the shot that you don’t need to. I think that’s the most frustrating thing on my part, an experienced batter shouldn’t be making that mistake twice in two games. Hence why I’ve been doing the work and I expect better from myself.”Cameron Green roars in celebration after dismissing Joe Root•CA/Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Green believes he is doing anything specific at his end and has felt he has been fortuitous on two occasions.”It’s a bit of fun a moment, isn’t it?” Green said. “I’ve just got very simple plans to him. Basically, just keep it tight, hold it from one end, and the other guys do their job.”I’ve just got lucky a couple of times.”But he’s a world-class player. And even the scores he’s got so far, he obviously hasn’t got a hundred but he’s batting beautifully out in the middle. So we’ve got to be on our game again.”For as well as Green has bowled, his primary role in the team is as a top-six batter. He is yet to really settle at Test level after six Test matches despite dominating Sheffield Shield cricket over the last two years. He made 33 not out in the second innings in Adelaide after having his off-stump knocked back by Ollie Robinson and Ben Stokes for 0 and 2 in his first two innings of the series.Green’s setup and preliminary movement for both dismissals were forensically critiqued by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting on Channel Seven’s broadcast of the Adelaide Test. Green has seen Ponting’s breakdown and has worked on making the necessary adjustments. But Green admitted that he was still trying to get mentally comfortable with playing at Test level, mirroring a process he needed to go through at first-class level a few years ago.”It’s definitely something I’m still working on,” Green said. “You still get a bit overwhelmed when you go out to bat or bowl. But I think that’s pretty natural for any 22-year-old playing Test cricket. That’s definitely something to work on, but it’s a work in progress.”
