Matt Parkinson 'gutted' to be left out of England's white-ball squads at start of summer

Legspinner hopes performances against Pakistan prove he can play alongside Adil Rashid at T20 World Cup

Matt Roller19-Jul-2021Matt Parkinson has admitted he was “gutted” to be left out of England’s white-ball squads at the start of the summer and that he hopes his performances throughout Pakistan’s tour can prove he can play in the same team as Adil Rashid at the T20 World Cup in October.Parkinson was overlooked for the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka last month, with Liam Dawson preferred as England’s third spin option. Eoin Morgan, their limited-overs captain, explained at the time that Dawson’s versatility and his ability to bowl in the powerplay had been key factors in him earning selection, but Parkinson admitted that he was so disappointed about his omission that he had not asked for any feedback.”Obviously I was gutted,” he said on Monday. “I didn’t ask for any feedback – I was sort of hoping it was about letting me play a bit in the Blast, and not come and carry drinks. That was how I tried to look at it. Sometimes if you look at things too closely, you can get down very easily, and I think I probably used it as momentum to performance for Lancashire.”It’s funny how cricket works. A month ago, I probably would never have thought I’d have played for England this summer, so to have played for the past two weeks have been great – if you’d told me two weeks ago I’d have played five internationals for England this summer and taken some wickets I’d have probably laughed at you. I think the reason I’ve done well is because I tried to use it as a bonus. I didn’t really have this on my radar.”Matt Parkinson was overlooked for Sri Lanka’s tour last month•Getty Images

Parkinson’s success in Sunday’s 45-run win – he took 1 for 25 in four overs and conceded a single boundary while defending a score of 200 – formed part of an unprecedented, spin-heavy England strategy, which saw him, Rashid and Moeen Ali bowl 11 overs between them to strangle Pakistan’s run chase. It was the first time that Parkinson had played in the same England team as another frontline legspinner, and he said he hoped that his success in tandem with Rashid demonstrated their complementary skillsets.”I’m used to playing with spinners at Lancs – it’s a philosophy we use there,” he said. “We bowl spin through the middle and to do that with England yesterday was awesome. A lot gets highlighted about how slowly I bowl – [Rashid] bowls faster than me, he uses his googly more than me. I think we are different and I think that’s why yesterday worked so well: from each end it was different and they couldn’t just line up one of us.”Moving forward, I would love to play with Rash. I don’t think it’s always feasible, but I’d like to think the performances I’ve put in this week will only aid us going forward. The best thing about yesterday was the pressure we had on them: all three spinners didn’t really bowl a bad ball, and I think it was 11 overs, 5 for 80-odd [87] and that only got ruined at the end by some slogging.Related

England spinners get to grips with parched Headingley pitch in T20 World Cup dry run

“To have that bowling at the other end is great, and probably pushes me on as well. I think, ‘Rash has bowled a great over, and I need to bowl well here as well’. Hopefully I’ve performed well enough for England to consider playing two legspinners again. I know Rash is number one and an absolute gun bowler – probably the best spinner in the world – but I’d like to think this week has helped me push my case forward.”After a bright start in Friday’s first T20I at Trent Bridge, Parkinson conceded 36 runs in his final two overs to end with 0 for 47 as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan targeted the short midwicket boundary. He stuck to his strengths at Headingley, tossing the ball up and focusing on flight and drift rather than the speed gun, which has been a concern for him in the past (he is among the slowest bowlers recorded in international cricket).”Trent Bridge is a tough place to bowl – you need wickets early really to stem the flow,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I relaxed a bit but I thought I could search for a wicket, got full and that’s when I got banged into the stands. That was a good learner and I used it at Headingley.”In the past I’ve probably thought about [speed] too much. In South Africa [in early 2020] there was a lot written about it and I probably let that affect me – looking up at the board a lot, trying to see if I could push 47mph/76kph.”I’ve just embraced it really – we had a chat [earlier in the] summer about it and I said I’d like to be the only bowler that does it this way. It’d be pretty cool not to have to conform to what other spinners do – to be niche. It might be difficult and on some grounds you’re going to struggle but I’d like to think when there’s a little bit there that I can stick to that.”

£100,000-per-week Arsenal ace also set to miss Man City clash with Odegaard

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has a few tactical conundrums ahead of their trip to Premier League title rivals Man City on Sunday, with a few key members of the squad ruled out and unable to play in what is one of their most crucial games of the campaign.

Man City vs Arsenal – team news and injury updates

The north Londoners have come through a challenging week unscathed thus far, with Arteta’s unbeaten side taking all the spoils against Tottenham in a 1-0 win last weekend before coming away from Atalanta with a precious point in the Champions League on Thursday.

Attention now turns to their trip to the Etihad Stadium and third-successive away game, with Arsenal aiming to avoid defeat against the Premier League champions who have thwarted their title charge in each of the last two seasons.

Arsenal will be missing a few key players against City, most notably captain Martin Odegaard, who sustained ankle ligament damage during a 2-1 Norway win over Austria in the UEFA Nations League earlier this month.

Odegaard could be back for Arsenal’s clash against Liverpool at the end of October, according to some reports, but the Gunners are also aware he could miss this estimated return date as they err on the side of caution when it comes to his rehabilitation.

Mikel Merino is sidelined with a fractured shoulder as well, so he is another certain absentee for City as the Spaniard continues his recovery ahead of his eventual debut later in the year.

“A really competitive one,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s trip to Man City.

“We go to the home of the champions, the team that I think in Premier League history has been the most consistent ever, not only in terms of results but in terms of dominance and consistent top performances. This is the challenge, we have to go there and prove that again we’ve made another step and we can compete.

“We knew the schedule and we knew that it’s extremely rare to play in these conditions with three massive away games in six days, but it was what it was so we have prepared for that, both physically, mentally and tactically. We’re making sure that everyone is ready for it, because we’re going to need them, especially with the injuries that we had from the international break.”

Losing Odegaard and Merino means Kai Havertz could be dropped into midfield against Man City, like the German was against Atalanta, with one of either Gabriel Jesus or Raheem Sterling up front.

Arsenal without Takehiro Tomiyasu against Man City

Odegaard and Merino are by no means their only casualties, though, with Japan international Takehiro Tomiyasu still unavailable following his knee injury in the summer.

“Tomi is amazing. He’s the best right-back I’ve ever played with. He’s always focused. It’s an honour to play next to him,” said Ben White to DAZN Japan (via The Metro).

“Tomi does the simple things at a world-class level. He is very alert and he isn’t careless in games. From the beginning he’s completely understood English and speaks as well as I do.”

The defender is yet to feature this season as a result, and according to football.london, Tomiyasu will miss Arsenal’s game against Man City as well.

The estimated return date for him is Arsenal’s home game against Leicester City next weekend, so Arteta won’t be able to call upon the £100,000-per-week ace on Sunday.

Hampshire versus Middlesex – match abandonedHampshire Hawks’ hopes of a happy homecoming was ruined by rain after Monday’s Vitality Blast clash with Middlesex was washed out without a ball being bowled at the Ageas Bowl.A torrential downpour over Southampton two hours before play was due to begin left the outfield covered in puddles.Although the ground-staff did mop up most of the excess water, play was abandoned when the heavens opened again five minutes before a pitch inspection was due to take place. It was the third time in four matches Hampshire have received a no-result point due to rain and it keeps them rooted to the foot of the South Group table. The Hawks, who have played their first seven matches away due to their home ground being used for international purposes, desperately needed a win to keep alive their flickering hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the competition. It was a similar story of frustration for Middlesex, who sit one spot above the hosts, but have played a game more having lost seven of their opening nine fixtures. Both sides return to action later this week with Hampshire hosting Surrey on Wednesday and Middlesex taking on Sussex at Lord’s on Thursday.

Ano Novo!

Club tell England star they could sell him as Tottenham declare interest

Tottenham Hotspur could have a realistic chance to sign an England star in the new year, with his club directly informing the player that they could look to sell him next year.

Tottenham's rumoured transfer plans for 2025

Spurs ended the summer window with £113 million spent on four senior summer additions, including a season-long loan extension for winger Timo Werner, a £40 million deal for Archie Gray, the signing of striker Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert’s arrival in N17.

That doesn’t include moves for wonderkids Lucas Bergvall and South Korean sensation Yang Min-hyeok, with the latter set to fully join up in January after a brief loan spell back at Gangwon FC.

According to some reports, Bergvall is set for a run of game time under Postecoglou, but it remains to be seen whether the teenage Swede will be given any minutes during their blockbuster clash at Old Trafford on Sunday.

At the end of the summer, Spurs also secured a first option to buy Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis, as part of a deal which saw midfielder Giovani Lo Celso go the other way and back to his former club.

For 2025, technical director Johan Lange, chairman Daniel Levy and the wider recruitment team are already at work to bolster Postecoglou’s squad. Some reports believe that Tottenham are frontrunners to sign Jonathan David from Lille, despite Solanke’s arrival, with the Canadian’s contract expiring next summer as things stand.

Canadian striker Jonathan David

Meanwhile, it is also believed that Spurs have told Milan they’re prepared to pay £17m for winger Noah Okafor, so it appears that a new attacker is on the agenda in north London.

Further back, Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has been sporadically linked with a move to N17. The 24-year-old, who impressed for England at Euro 2024, was subject to an array of rejected bids from Newcastle United (Alex Powell), who had absolutely no luck tempting Palace chairman Steve Parish to sell.

Tottenham on alert as Palace tell Guehi they could sell

Guehi’s contract expires in 2026, and according to The Boot Room, Palace have told Guehi they could sell him next year if he doesn’t pen an extension.

It is believed Tottenham have registered their interest in the defender as a result, but they’re not alone, as Liverpool, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Chelsea are all monitoring this situation closely ahead of a potential move.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

Palace would consider selling as soon as January, and it is believed that the Eagles could be forced to drop their £75 million asking price.

“We would like to keep hold of him. There is a price and a situation where we might consider it,” said Parish on Guehi to BBC Sport in August.

“Somebody [in another interview] said he is a superstar, so somebody has got to pay superstar money.

“Realistically, he is homegrown, 24 years old and a sensational talent – so somebody has to make it difficult for us. At the moment, it isn’t. He will still be at Crystal Palace at the moment, but it’s not impossible [that he goes].

“He is certainly not making anybody’s life difficult, his agents are decent people.

“It is a very good situation. Whether he is here or not will make no difference as to how he performs.”

Marcus Trescothick admits England's preparation not ideal

But batting coach refuses to make excuses for first-innings 183 all out

George Dobell04-Aug-2021Marcus Trescothick has admitted that England “probably [did] not” have appropriate preparation before heading into the first Test of the LV= Insurance series against India at Trent Bridge.England were dismissed for just 183 on Wednesday, with only Joe Root reaching 30. And with several of England top-order batters having not played a first-class match since the end of their series against New Zealand in early June and a couple of others having not played since the tour of India at the start of the year, it left Trescothick, one of the team’s batting coaches, facing questions about the team’s preparation heading into the series. While clearly in an awkward position considering his role with the ECB, Trescothick was honest in his assessment.”It’s probably not [appropriate preparation], no,” Trescothcik admitted. “Of course you would want them to play a certain amount of red-ball cricket going into it. Scheduling is always an issue.”We’d love to get more time into them at the crease: bowling with the red ball; facing the red ball. We’d love the preparation to be slightly better. But it’s not the way it is, so you have to get into it in a different fashion.”We all appreciate that trying to get all the cricket in across the whole summer – county teams, The Hundred, all these competitions going on – there’s no easy solution to get this right and something always has to give.Related

India's quicks answer the big question, and some smaller ones

“As coaches, we accept that is the way it is but we cannot sit back and just because we haven’t had the prep that it isn’t going to work.”If we could get a couple of periods of time where we could get a red-ball game before [a Test series], then excellent. But quite often you go into Test series knowing that you’re coming off the back of a white-ball competition. That’s just the way international cricket is and you have to find your way as an international player to make that work. We don’t want to use it as an excuse.”Trescothick was also full of praise for an India attack which he rated the “most potent” they had possessed for years. Recognising that they were able to omit a bowler as skilful as R Ashwin, he praised their quality and depth.”They are the most potent in comparison to where they have been for the past few years,” he said. “They have a lot of bases covered. You can see the guys are not playing, how much quality they have also.”They have a good stock currently. They don’t get to the World Test Championship final for no reason. We saw them go to Australia and perform there, so it’s no surprise to us. It’s just challenging and we know it’s a real contest, we have to raise our game to match up against their skills. We have that ability, it’s just making sure we do it better than we have done today.”Of course we’re disappointed not to get more runs on the board. There were times we were playing well and getting right on top of the game and then obviously we lost wickets in clusters so it turned on its head quite quickly.”But I’m not worried. I see these guys play and practise and you see the talent they have. We’ve got to keep remaining positive. Today has not been the ideal day, of course, not but that doesn’t define how the rest of the game or the rest of the series is going to go.”We’ll go away, lick our wounds and find a way to try and get back in the game.”
