Jota urged to sign new Celtic deal

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish has urged Celtic to sign winger Jota on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Jota shines for Celtic

The 23-year-old completed a loan move to Parkhead from Benfica last summer, as he looked to earn regular playing time away from his parent club.

Jota has proven to be a superb signing by Celtic, playing his part in their Scottish Premiership title win, chipping in with seven goals and eight assists in the competition.

The hope is that the Hoops now sign the Portuguese permanently – something they are working on currently, with Sky Sports reporting a negotiation over the level of sell-on clause the deal will have.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-8/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: McLeish makes fresh plea

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish, a regular pundit on Sky Sports, urged Celtic to hurry up and get the deal done:

“I think give them it (the sell-on clause). I think it’s a no brainer. He has been outstanding for them and very instrumental in them winning that league.

“Why not do a deal? It’s a kind of safe way to get him to sign on the dotted line. I would say definitely Celtic should do some kind of deal.”

The Verdict: No-brainer for Hoops

The thought of Celtic losing Jota after such an impressive season is worrying, with his trickery and end product from out wide proving to be a key attacking weapon.

He certainly appears to be happy at Parkhead, meaning the move seems set to happen, but the Hoops need to act quickly to ensure he isn’t snapped up by someone else.

Signing Jota in the coming weeks would arguably feel more significant than any new summer arrival, given the impact he has made in his short time in Scotland.

Tottenham: Conte green-lights exit with agents sent message

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has swung the axe behind the scenes as he gives the green-light for his club to make a sale, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Conte eyes Spurs overhaul…

Last Friday’s transfer summit with club chief Fabio Paratici in Italy has been at the centre of much discussion, coming after the Lilywhites also announced a £150m equity increase (The Telegraph).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Conte guiding Spurs to a top-four Premier League finish and securing the riches of Champions League football for next season has seemingly gifted the club a new lease of life ahead of what could be a very interesting summer transfer window.

However, Paratici will also be tasked with balancing the books and selling players who are out of favour, with Spurs’ head coach reportedly making a decision on Harry Winks.

The Latest: Conte swings Winks axe…

As per Football Insider, Conte has deemed the English midfielder ‘surplus to requirements’ as he green-lights the player’s sale, prompting Spurs to tell Winks he is free to find a new club.

Having been sent a clear message, the 26-year-old’s representatives have apparently been ‘informed’ by Tottenham that they will listen to offers of around £20m for the player.

The Verdict: Right move…

At the start of Conte’s tenure, Winks actually looked as if he was working his way back into favour in north London. The former Chelsea boss called the Englishman ‘reliable’ and a player he can ‘count on’ at the turn of the year, gifting the 26-year-old possible hope of a career resurgence in N17.

Some pundits, like former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson, even tipped Winks to ‘flourish’ under Conte’s tutelage, branding the midfielder a ‘perfect fit’ for his tactical system (Football Insider).

However, with the ex-Inter Milan boss seemingly now deciding to part company with the 26-year-old, it appears that such promise has failed to be realised.

Leeds: Paul Robinson makes Takumi Minamino claim

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has made a transfer claim on Liverpool attacker Takumi Minamino, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Leeds links

The Whites were linked with a loan move for the 27-year-old late in the January transfer window and have once again been credited with an interest in recent days.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-44/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reports suggested that Leeds would renew their interest in the Japan international, should they avoid relegation. As we now know, Jesse Marsch’s side survived on the final day following a 2-1 win over Brentford and are already working on a move for RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

Aaronson has previously starred under Marsch, as has Minamino, who has been labelled ‘exceptional’ by Jurgen Klopp.

The Latest: Robinson’s comments

Robinson, who contributes as a pundit for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider regarding Minamino’s future at Anfield.

He said that the player will ultimately be the one to decide his next move, believing that an exit could earn him more playing time.

Robinson stated:

“It really depends on Minamino’s ambition. If he is happy playing a bit-part role then he will stay. Klopp won’t want him to leave.

“That squad is challenging on every front possible. There is no better place to be if you want to be part of the squad. If he wants to play football week in, week out then you suspect he will leave.

“Klopp is starting to rejuvenate that squad but I still think there is a squad role for Minamino next season.

“Listen, if he is happy to sit on the bench every week and play now and then it is a manager’s dream. His future will be determined by personal ambition.”

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Minamino impressed under Marsch at RB Salzburg, contributing to 20 goals in 22 games, which resulted in a move to Liverpool midway through the 2019/20 campaign.

Capable of playing anywhere across the front line or as an attacking midfielder, the 27-year-old could be a shrewd attacking signing as Marsch looks to implement his style ahead of his first full season in charge at Leeds.

The 48-year-old has got the best out of Minamino in Austria and could look to do the same at Elland Road, especially with star attacker Raphinha linked with a move to Barcelona.

Rangers: Crystal Palace ready to move for Joe Aribo

Crystal Palace are reportedly interested in signing Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo, claims Alex Crook in his latest talkSPORT column.

The Lowdown: Aribo’s Rangers career

Having arrived from Charlton Athletic on a free transfer in 2019, the 25-year-old has become an integral part of Rangers’ midfield.

The Nigeria international has featured 56 times this season, netting nine goals and producing ten assists to help push the Glasgow side to a second-place finish both in the league and in Europe.

Aribo averaged a 7.03 WhoScored rating throughout Rangers’ emphatic Europa League campaign, where Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side sensationally reached the final before missing out on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Palace want Aribo

According to journalist Alex Crook in his talkSPORT column, Crystal Palace have identified Aribo as a potential Conor Gallagher replacement.

Eagles boss Patrick Viera is said to be a big admirer of the 25-year-old, as he believes the midfielder’s versatility would be a huge asset to his Palace side.

Aribo fits Palace’s up-and-coming recruitment strategy, so the Premier League club are likely to make a move for the Rangers man in the summer.

The Verdict: Big loss for Rangers

Aribo’s Ibrox departure would come as a huge loss to van Bronckhorst, as the Dutchman has claimed that the midfielder plays a “very important role” in his Gers side.

Aston Villa ace and former Charlton teammate Ezri Konsa has been extremely complimentary of the Nigeria international, claiming that he reminds him of a “left-footed Yaya Toure” due to his “unique” play-style.

With a potential Ibrox exit on the cards, van Bronckhorst will be doing anything he can to keep the midfielder in Glasgow.

Southampton: Hasenhuttl sets sights on ‘beast’ summer signing

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has personally set his sights on signing an ‘absolute beast’ this summer, according to a reliable source.

The Lowdown: Striker on the cards?

The Saints have been tipped to add a new striker to their ranks for 2022/2023 amid claims they may find it difficult to seal a permanent deal for Chelsea loanee Armando Broja.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-newest-updates/” title=”Southampton newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Links to Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi have emerged in just one example as transfer chief Martin Semmens looks at alternatives to the Albania international going forward.

New targets are seemingly coming to light at a consistent rate as the transfer window looms with reliable reporter Jack Rosser, formerly of The Evening Standard, sharing what he knows.

The Latest: Southampton weigh Delap…

According to the journalist, Southampton are now ‘considering’ a loan deal for Man City’s young striking starlet Liam Delap.

This comes after the successful signings of promising young talents like Broja and Tino Livramento with Rosser claiming Hasenhuttl now personally has another ‘in his sights’.

Indeed, Southampton’s head coach has allegedly ‘moved to target some of the best young players in the Premier League’ with Delap now becoming one of them.

The Verdict: Get it done…

The 19-year-old is a serious talent and we believe landing him on loan is a real no-brainer.

A low-risk move financially, Delap is already turning heads – even drawing comparisons to City’s major new signing Erling Braut Haaland in the past (Goal).

His lack of opportunities under Pep Guardiola this season is down to injury issues if anything with the Spaniard even raving over his incredible development last year and promising him a place in the first team (The Sun).

This came after what was a truly astounding 2020/2021 season for City’s elite development squad where he scored 24 goals and assisted five others in 20 games – prompting renowned football talent scout Jacek Kulig to call him an ‘absolute beast’ (Twitter).

Rated highly by critics and one of the best coaches in world football, a move for Delap should seriously be entertained by Southampton.

Leeds: Marsch faces an uncertain future

With Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United currently staring down the barrel of relegation from the Premier League, whether or not the 48-year-old manager remains at the club in the event of the Whites dropping down to the second tier appears very much up for debate.

Indeed, this question was posed to the American in a recent press conference, with the former RB Leipzig head coach appearing to suggest that he was not brought into the club by Victor Orta to simply oversee the remaining fixtures of the season, but rather to build a project at Elland Road.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

Regarding his future in LS11 beyond the end of the current campaign, Marsch said: “I am so focused on what we are doing right here, right now. My vision was not 12 games. It’s over years. The first step is staying in the Premier League. The club deserves it and the club has earned it. But we have to earn it in the moment right now.”

However, despite the 48-year-old’s rather optimistic outlook, the fact remains that, should Leeds find themselves playing Championship football next season – an outcome which, following the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday, is now a 65% probability – he will have failed in what will undoubtedly the primary objective given to him by Orta and Andrea Radrizzani back in March.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Phil Hay suggested that securing survival for the Whites is the only real way the American can back up his positive outlook concerning his future, with the journalist writing:

“He is nine games in and you cannot tell at this stage if you are seeing all of the coach or the man, which creates confusion over whether to be convinced or perplexed by some of what he is saying. Gandhi won’t get Leeds United out of trouble and neither will Mother Theresa. Marsch, on the other hand, can. It is an essential first step in proving he can walk the walk.”

Indeed, despite Leeds’ brief upturn in form following Marsch’s arrival at the club, results in recent weeks, as well as individual player performances – have been well below par, rendering Sunday’s meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion a must-win game if the Whites are to remain a Premier League side heading into 2022/23.

However, aside from deciding the club’s immediate future, the visit of the Seagulls could also determine whether or not Marsch will fulfil his prophecy of spending a number of years at Elland Road – as a defeat against Graham Potter’s outfit will force both Orta and Radrizzani into making a decision as to whether the 48-year-old is the man who they want to lead the Whites into a campaign in the second-tier of English football.

And, in the event of relegation, while it is true that a number of the current playing staff – including the likes of Rodrigo and Mateusz Klich – should be moved on this summer, we at Football FanCast also believe it would be wise to axe the £80k-per-week American, as the 48-year-old once again appears to be “out of his depth.”

Jason Roy embraces home comforts in final push to secure World Cup berth

Despite being most frequent ODI selection since 2019, opener is in a fight for his spot for title defence

Matt Roller12-Sep-2023England’s selectors were deep in conversation in the middle at the Kia Oval. Jos Buttler, pads still on after a net, wandered over to the central strip with Matthew Mott, Rob Key and Luke Wright for company and the four of them stood for half an hour, no more than 50 yards away from the players whose World Cup hopes rest in their hands. At the far end of the ground, Jason Roy was being put through his paces by Craig de Weymarn, England’s physio. Roy has missed the first two ODIs against New Zealand after suffering a back spasm on the morning of the game in Cardiff, and underwent a fitness test ahead of a possible return on his home ground on Wednesday. His name doubtless featured in the nearby conversation. No England player has featured in as many ODIs as Roy in this World Cup cycle – not even Buttler – yet two weeks and one day before they fly to India, his seat on the plane is not completely secure. Roy is part of their provisional 15-man squad but is under pressure from Harry Brook, and could use a score this week to alleviate it.Roy is hardly alone among sportspeople in having battled occasional injuries across his career but the timing of this most recent one was unfortunate. England play nine games in five-and-a-half weeks across eight different cities in the World Cup and, with squad numbers so tightly capped, they cannot afford too many niggles. It was at The Oval seven years ago that Roy truly announced himself as an international cricketer, hitting 162 off 118 – then the second-highest ODI innings by an Englishman – in a successful chase of 308 against Sri Lanka in a 42-over game. He was 25 years old, playing his 24th ODI and with the world at his feet.Roy’s role in England’s 2019 World Cup win should not be underestimated. He will always be associated with the winning moment, firing the ball in from deep midwicket to enable Buttler to run Martin Guptill out off the final ball of the Super Over, but he was phenomenal with the bat too, passing 50 in five of his seven innings, including a ferocious match-sealing display in the semi-final against Australia, while maintaining a strike rate of 115.36.The question that England’s selectors must answer is whether, four years on, Roy is still the same player. After that World Cup, his ODI career average was 42.79, with a strike rate of 107.40; in this cycle, he has averaged 31.78, his strike rate dipping to 98.99. It is not a catastrophic record, but nor is it an unequivocal case for inclusion.Twice this year, Roy has shown why England have been so quick to back him as a 50-over player, even having dropped him from their T20I set-up. He has two hundreds in six ODI innings this year: the fact that one came in Bloemfontein and the other in Mirpur highlights his adaptability.Soon after England named their provisional squad, Buttler defended Roy’s inclusion by highlighting his record alongside Jonny Bairstow. “I feel we become very obsessed with age in England and we are always looking for the next thing,” Buttler said. “If people are still performing, age is irrelevant.”Related

Yet this summer, Roy has hardly spent any time in the middle. After a solid IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders, he tore his calf before Surrey’s opening game in the T20 Blast and his longest innings of the summer lasted 42 balls; he won the Hundred with Oval Invincibles, but averaged 17.11 with three ducks and a solitary half-century.”There’s a slightly different tempo that you have to play in this format, so he’ll be desperate to get out there and spend some time in the middle,” David Willey, Roy’s England team-mate, said on Tuesday. “I don’t know how far off he is, but he’ll be itching to get out there and score some runs.”The clamour for Brook’s inclusion has quietened down in the past week, with a run of 8, 4, 25 and 2 across the two white-ball formats acting as a reminder that he is not yet the finished product. But Dawid Malan, the spare batter in the provisional squad, did his own chances no harm with 54 in Cardiff, and Brook could yet squeeze Roy out.Roy seems to have reconciled himself to the fact that his England career will soon draw to a close. “There’s this 50-over World Cup, then there’s going to be that changing of the guard,” he told the recently. “Do they want to look at the future, which is probably the right thing? I’m at ease with it.”But first, Roy needs to make sure that he is on the plane to India. Assuming he is passed fit on Wednesday morning, he will have no better stage on which to nail his spot down.

Rebel United: 'Every victory against Real Madrid is symbolic' – How Gerard Pique became a controversial Spanish icon

Rebel United introduces players who prefer to swim against the tide, such as Barcelona and Spain legend Gerard Pique, who has achieved great significance beyond the pitch thanks to his Catalan pride and innovative spirit…

"It was the toughest game," said Gerard Pique after Barcelona's seemingly unremarkable 3-0 victory over Las Palmas in October 2017. That was because the match coincided with an all together more important event in the world-class defender's life. On that Sunday, Pique was thinking about something even more important to him: the referendum that was supposed to secure Catalunya's independence from Spain, in which Pique himself had cast his vote a few hours earlier.

"It was a tough day. I am and feel Catalan, today more than ever. I am proud of the behaviour of the people of Catalunya. Voting is a right that must be defended," said Pique through tears.

As a precaution, the match at Camp Nou was played behind closed doors, while outside dramatic scenes were unfolding as the Spanish police took violent action against what was deemed to be an illegal referendum.

Getty ImagesFace of a movement

Although around 90 percent of voters were in favour of independence, the autonomous community in the north-east of the country remained part of Spain because the nation's government did not recognise the result. For Pique, who calls himself not only a proud Catalan but also a Spaniard, this was a bitter outcome.

In the run-up to the referendum, the defensive giant had campaigned intensively to get as many people as possible to vote, increasingly becoming one of the faces of the Catalan independence movement. Pique, however, felt the painful consequences to his reputation immediately after the referendum.

During a public training session for the Spain national team in preparation for a World Cup qualifying match against Albania in early October 2017, the then-Barca star was not only booed by some spectators, but also insulted. 'Pique, get out' was written on one of the signs directed towards the defender, and after only about 20 minutes, the session had to be stopped because the atmosphere became so hostile.

AdvertisementGettyBetween two worlds

The previous day, Pique had tearfully offered his resignation to Spain coach Julen Lopetegui, who declined it, and the day after the training session was cut short, Pique appeared at a press conference to signal unity while emphasising that he had quickly dismissed thoughts of an early end to his career with La Roja.

"I've been playing for Spain for almost 10 years now. I'm not going to disappear through the back door," said the then-30-year-old while refusing to publicly take a stand on Catalunya's independence: "We footballers are global figures, we can't take sides. In this difficult political situation, dialogue is the only way forward, otherwise things will get even worse. Who cares how I react? I can and am allowed to have my opinion. Many want independence – many don't."

Nevertheless, Pique often found himself caught between two worlds in the national team environment. The tensions between the proud Barca icon and the stars of his counterparts from the Spanish capital ran too deep, and not just because of the well-known club rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

AFPKey to two dynasties

"Every victory against Real Madrid is symbolic," said Pique after a Clasico triumph in March 2019, and it was clear to everyone that he was also referring to the political tensions between the two clubs. He also endured a love-hate relationship with Blancos legend Sergio Ramos, as the pair came together for the national team despite being rivals at club level.

"I defend my colours, Pique defends his. And when we defend the same thing, we do it together. But don't expect me to hug him after a Clasico," Ramos once said of his international team-mate.

Although they obviously never got along particularly well, Pique and Ramos celebrated huge successes togther. They were fixtures in Spain's defence during the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship titles, playing a decisive role in the Iberians' most successful era.

At club level, Pique, who grew up in Barca's famous La Masia academy, left the Blaugrana at the age of 17 to join Manchester United. But after failing to make his big breakthrough at Old Trafford, he returned to Barcelona in 2008 and became a cornerstone of their successful era under Pep Guardiola.

Pique combined resolute tackling, heading ability, outstanding positioning and elegance on the ball, thus setting the style for the ideal Spanish centre-back. However, even around the time of his first major tournament, the 2010 World Cup, he was also making headlines off the pitch.

After all, it was then that he laid the foundation for his long-term relationship with singer Shakira, with whom he has two children. The Colombian singer performed 'Waka Waka', the official song of the tournament in South Africa, and after meeting her during his brief appearance in the accompanying music video, Pique went on the offensive.

"I told her that we had to get to the final so that I could see her again – she performed at the final," the Spaniard later revealed .

Both plans worked out. Spain reached the final, where they crowned themselves world champions with a victory over the Netherlands, and Pique won Shakira's heart. Their relationship lasted 11 years before, in the summer of 2022, the couple announced their separation. Pique is alleged to have cheated on Shakira, and in the months following the break-up, a public mudslinging match took place.

Freddie Freeman Revealed to Have Played Through Second Injury in Historic World Series

Freddie Freeman just won World Series MVP while dealing with an injured ankle. But apparently, he had an even worse injury he kept hidden.

On Thursday, as the Los Angeles Dodgers basked in the glow of their World Series victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday, it was revealed their first baseman had been playing with broken cartilage in his ribcage.

On Oct. 3 during a simulated game before the Dodgers would host the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series, Freeman felt pain in his side. He tried to ignore it. Then the following happened, according to a story from ESPN's Jeff Passan:

Chelsea now preparing blockbuster £87m+ offer to sign "elite" new striker

Chelsea are now preparing an offer worth over £87m to sign an “elite” new striker in a blockbuster move, it has been revealed.

Blues preparing bid for yet another new striker

The Blues made it three wins on the spin in all competitions on Saturday afternoon, with Pedro Neto particularly catching the eye, being awarded a 9.5 SofaScore match rating after chipping in with a goal and an assist.

Enzo Maresca’s side relied on their defenders to provide the other goals, with Josh Acheampong and Reece James also getting in on the act, and it was a late strike from the captain that wrapped up a 3-0 victory on the road.

Joao Pedro, on the other hand, was unable to have much of an impact on proceedings, and the Brazilian has now gone four Premier League games without a goal, after making an impressive start to the campaign.

Of course, it is still way too early to lose faith in Pedro, but the west Londoners are never shy about spending big in the transfer window, and they have now set their sights on a new striker.

That is according to a report from Spain, which states Chelsea are now preparing an offer of more than €100m (£87m) for FC Porto star Samu Omorodion, who has established himself as one of the most promising young strikers in Europe.

There is a feeling that Omorodion would be a perfect fit in the Premier League, and the Blues are now willing to spend big to get a deal done, with the striker potentially in line to become one of their most expensive signings of all-time.

The blockbuster move is being considered for next summer, rather than January, which gives the 21-year-old the remainder of the season to prove he is the right man to lead the line for Maresca’s side.
