The might of Moeen

England 369 for 9 (Moeen 102, Root 84, Stokes 73, Cummins 3-82) beat West Indies 245 (Gayle 94, Plunkett 5-52, Rashid 3-34) by 124 runs
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMoeen Ali produced one of the most breathtaking batting assaults in international history, a 53-ball hundred that included an incredible eight sixes in the space of 14 balls, as England withstood a withering riposte from the mighty Chris Gayle to seal an unassailable 2-0 series lead in the third ODI at Bristol. The final margin of victory, 124 runs, may have been comfortable for England in the end, but it required a performance of rare brilliance from Moeen to put his team’s total beyond the range of a spirited West Indies side, who rallied with impressive resolve from a humiliating final six overs in which their seamers were panned for 93 runs.Set a daunting 370 to win, having at one stage had England wobbling on 217 for 6, West Indies stayed in the hunt until Gayle’s dismissal for 94 from 78 balls in the 27th over. At 176 for 4, it was an insurmountable loss, especially after Marlon Samuels had been sent on his way for 11 via a contentious DRS overturn, although Jason Holder cracked a brisk 34 from 26 balls to maintain the defiance into the 40th over. It was left to Adil Rashid – the man whose dead-eyed shy from midwicket had sawn Gayle’s innings off in its prime – and a maiden five-wicket haul from Liam Plunkett to snuff out the last of West Indies’ resistance. For much of the contest, a packed Bristol crowd might have assumed that a 132-run stand for the fourth wicket between England’s two biggest names, Joe Root and Ben Stokes, would be enough of a treat to mark their day out. But Moeen had other ideas. The sheer audacity of his hitting is best expressed in the purity of his final 14 balls – 6, 6, 2, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6, 2, 4, 1, 6, 0, 6 – with which he transformed a meandering run-a-ball 39 into the fastest ODI hundred ever made on English soil.As the blows rained down, West Indies’ resolve went to pot – and it had been pretty resolute up to that point, with England forced twice to battle back from uncompromising scorelines – first when Root and Stokes rescued them from 74 for 3, and then when Moeen and Chris Woakes came together at an awkward 217 for 6 in the 35th over. But the ferocity of the dead-eyed Moeen ripped the contest from their clutches. His onslaught was triggered by the return to the attack of Miguel Cummins, who up to that point had been West Indies’ outstanding bowler with a haul of three prime wickets – namely Root, Alex Hales and the off-colour Jos Buttler. But Moeen cleared his front foot from the very first ball he received, battering him for back-to-back sixes to bring up his fifty from 41 balls. And that was just the start. Another six from the final ball of Cummins’ over segued into three more in a row off Holder, as West Indies conceded a grim 50 runs in two overs. Jerome Taylor might have ended the fun thereafter but Gayle dropped a slashed cut at point with Moeen on 87, whereupon the hapless Cummins was slammed into the stands twice more in three balls to bring up a stunning century. The final moments of Moeen’s innings had a touch of comedy about them as he was dropped twice in two balls by Ashley Nurse, the second an absolute howler off a top-edged slog, before picking out Holder one ball later. Poor Nurse had already clung onto a blinder two overs earlier, as he intercepted a scudding slog from Woakes to long-on, only to fling the ball over the boundary for six as his momentum took him over the rope.It was all a far cry from the tentative beginnings to England’s innings. After being asked to bat first on an unnerving greeny-brown surface that Eoin Morgan hoped would “play better than it looks” (not half…), England’s openers struggled initially for timing. When Jonny Bairstow popped a leading edge back to Holder to fall for 13 – his lowest completed ODI innings in his last eight visits to the crease – England were 28 for 1 after six overs, and braced for an attritional afternoon.Hales, widely touted for an Ashes call-up, showed flashes of his form in making 36 from 35 balls before being pinned lbw by Cummins, whereupon Morgan, bereft of runs in the course of his nomadic T20-led late-season, was done in first ball by Holder, a perfect lifter on off stump that kissed the edge of a tentative bat through to Shai Hope.At 74 for 3, the innings was in the balance, but Stokes and Root were unruffled as they set about laying the groundwork for what would prove a monstrously successful rebuild. After milking the spinners throughout the middle orders, Root signalled a change-up in tempo with an emphatic slog-sweep for six over midwicket off Nurse, and Stokes was all too willing to take up the challenge, crashing Nurse for consecutive sixes down the ground to threaten carnage. However, Rovman Powell, sticking to his guns in a restrictive spell of seam-up, tempted Stokes into a rash swipe to deep point for 73, and when Cummins produced a snorter to tickle the off bail of Buttler, he followed up by luring Root into a loose waft across the line. It could have been a decisive intervention. Instead, it merely unleashed the fury of Mo.And that could well have been that, so far as a contest was concerned. West Indies, however, have found a rare means of battling back in adversity on this tour – from their response to humiliation at Edgbaston in the Test series, to their victory in the Durham T20 after the Lord’s defeat, and now with the return of the Universe Boss from last week’s hamstring strain. With nine fours and six sixes in his 94 from 78 balls, including three in a row off Moeen to rebalance his overall match figures, Gayle’s presence alone kept the contest bubbling going into the final half of the innings. But then, a familiar shortcoming sold him short. With England forever on the alert for his increasingly fallible running between the wickets, Rashid at midwicket pinged down the non-striker’s stumps, and West Indies’ top gun was gone by a matter of millimetres.By then, the deck-hitting excellence of Plunkett – another man, maybe, with distant Ashes aspirations – had cranked open the top of West Indies’ batting order. In particular his early extractions of Hope and Samuels – albeit contentiously – were reward for the time-honoured virtue of pace and bounce outside off stump. And fittingly, it was Plunkett who wrapped up the contest with 65 balls remaining, as Holder holed out to long-off.

PCB forms committee to probe Arthur-Akmal rift

The investigation could hit an early roadblock with the Pakistan coach away on holiday and not expected to return till the second week of September

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Aug-2017The fallout from Umar Akmal’s accusations against Mickey Arthur rumbles on as the PCB has decided to form a committee to look into the matter. The committee comprises three members: director of cricket operations Haroon Rasheed, director of media Amjad Bhatti and the PCB’s general manager legal Salman Naseer.Though the claims behind Akmal’s allegations can be verified with relative ease, the committee is likely to stumble upon logistical difficulties from the start. Inzamam-ul Haq, a key witness to the alleged “abusive language” Arthur subjected Umar Akmal to, is out of the country performing Hajj, while Arthur is away on holiday and not expected to return till the second week of September.Earlier this week, National Cricket Academy head coach Mushtaq Ahmed denied that abusive language was directed towards Akmal by the head coach, saying Arthur used “slang words” but they were not directed at Akmal. The PCB initially appeared to throw its weight behind Arthur by issuing the show-cause notice to Akmal immediately after his outburst, but this latest development suggests that the matter remains wide open. The statement issued by the PCB at the time seemed to leave no room for the formation of a committee to ascertain blame. “The PCB strongly condemns reckless statements made by batsman Umar Akmal with regards to his omission from the ICC Champions Trophy squad,” it read.”Head coach Mickey Arthur had placed Umar in his white ball format plans and gave him repeated chances for redemption. Unfortunately, though, the batsman remained incapable of reaching the required fitness level. The PCB awaits his response to the show cause notice issued to him yesterday and hopes that, in the meantime, the batsman will refrain from making baseless allegations.”Arthur’s predecessor Waqar Younis, one of Akmal’s harsher critics of late, had advised against the formation of a committee in a press conference on Thursday. “This matter needs to be resolved by way of mutual understanding,” Waqar said. “Someone needs to sit Umar down and explain to him that when a teacher or any other senior figure ticks you off, it isn’t such a big deal. I don’t think Mickey Arthur would have gone overboard when chastising Umar. It’s purely frustration on his part because he isn’t part of the team.”

Arsenal Could Repeat Odegaard Success With "Powerful" £34m Gem

Arsenal could make their interest in one star striker a reality, waiting until the last moment to hijack the move from a rival…

Who are Arsenal signing this summer?

Whilst Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a swoop for Montpellier's Elye Wahi more recently, the Gunners actually hold a longstanding interest of their own in the marksman who has been tearing up French football of late.

With Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz having already been welcomed into the fold, Edu has shown he is not afraid to spend big to give Mikel Arteta the strongest squad possible for the new season.

Especially given the €40m (£34m) touted price tag, which would likely hamper the Lilywhites far more than it would their rivals.

Perhaps in hijacking this Spurs swoop, it could emulate their move from 2021, when they too stole Martin Odegaard from their clutches, to great success.

How good is Elye Wahi?

During that January, as chances at Real Madrid had been limited for the Norwegian maestro, he sought game time out on loan, demanding he be allowed to explore his options.

Two interested parties that arose both came from north London, and yet it was Arsenal who eventually captured his signature.

Reports emerged from Norway suggested that after speaking to Arteta, the decision became easy. He rejected the Lilywhites, and the rest is history.

He would move to the Emirates permanently the next summer and has since announced himself as one of the Premier League's leading creative forces from midfield.

As such, he improves with each passing season too, as his 15 goals and eight assists from last campaign mark an upgrade on his first full year since making his full-time switch, where he only posted 11 goal contributions.

His 7.35 average match rating from the most recent term even made him the division's sixth-best performer, as per Sofascore, as he has truly flourished in his role as captain.

Now, should Edu snatch another target from their rivals, Wahi could have a similarly transformative effect up front, adding some much-needed proficiency and a different dynamic to play off.

mikel-arteta

The 20-year-old would score an outstanding 19 goals in Ligue 1 alongside six assists, building upon his ten-goal haul from the season prior. His most recent exploits also saw the Frenchman maintain a 30% goal conversion rate, which is a marked upgrade on the 14% Gabriel Jesus recorded in the Premier League.

Whilst likely not a wholesale replacement for the Brazilian, his direct play style matched with his pace and power would make him a unique asset for Arteta, allowing him to switch up his philosophy should it be failing.

Such a new dimension could unlock a whole new type of goal for his side to score, as ex-Caen academy director Francis de Taddeo outlined those key assets: "He is a powerful, athletic and fast player with a range of dribbling skills where only he knows what he is going to do next".

Whilst not a move the Gunners need to make, they could still once again leave their rivals looking foolish by snagging a deal from right under their noses.

Should he prove half as successful as Odegaard has, it would be worth every penny.

New Zealand Cricket gets nod to host its first day-night Test

The match against England, scheduled from March 22 next year, is set to be played under lights following the Auckland Council’s approval

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Aug-2017Eden Park is set to host the first day-night Test in New Zealand, after the Auckland Council approved New Zealand Cricket’s request to host England under lights next year. The match, beginning from March 22, was tentatively scheduled as a day-night fixture before the approval.New Zealand Cricket COO Anthony Crummy was pleased with the accesibility the fixture allows.”This a very important outcome for Test cricket lovers in New Zealand – simply because it allows us the opportunity to play the game at a time when more people can engage with it,” he said. “We’re sure it will be a very successful event, and that English and New Zealand fans alike will make the most of the opportunity.”New Zealand had featured in the first ever day-night Test against Australia in Adelaide in November 2015. Since then, five Tests have been played under lights. Australia have hosted three of those. The Eden Park Test will be the eighth day-night Test overall, following Adelaide’s Ashes fixture later this year.

Leeds Could Avenge Gakpo Failure By Signing "Magic" £20k-p/w Gem

Leeds United have missed out on plenty of big-name transfers in recent memory, but last summer's pursuit of Cody Gakpo hurt more than most given their eventual relegation.

They cannot afford to allow the same to happen in this window if they seek an immediate top-flight return…

Did Cody Gakpo nearly sign for Leeds United?

Since last summer, the Whites have been seeking to avenge their failed attempt to bring Cody Gakpo to Elland Road.

The Dutchman even told The Times: "I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United. In the end the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, but also for PSV, because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

"It ended about a week before the end of the transfer window and in that week I had to decide if I would go to Leeds or Southampton. In the end I stayed, but it was a stressful period."

Having since gone on to sign and star for Liverpool, perhaps one of their targets could finally help the Yorkshire side move on from such disappointment.

That player happens to be West Bromwich Albion's Grady Diangana, a player Leeds reportedly hold an interest in, per Express & Star.

How good is Grady Diangana?

Whilst the £20k-per-week speedster has endured a tough couple of recent campaigns in the Midlands, his growth has been stunted by the tumultuous nature of life at the Hawthorns which was only stabilised recently under Carlos Corberan.

Last term saw the 24-year-old record just seven goal contributions in the Championship, yet his four league strikes would have ranked him fourth among Leeds' struggling squad in the Premier League most recently.

cody-gakpo

This came a year after a truly poor campaign, in which he posted just three goal contributions yet remained a pillar of hope for the Baggies due to his raw talents. Journalist Graeme Brown noted in 2021: "The issue with Diangana not firing is he’s the only one with the potential for magic."

Whilst these statistics are a far cry from the figures Gakpo was maintaining in his homeland, there is precedent to believe that he could reach those heights should a positive atmosphere in Yorkshire be cultivated.

During his first spell for West Brom on loan, as a 21-year-old, he would record 15 goal contributions in just 30 Championship games. Such form spurred Slaven Bilic to unload £18m for his services, clearly rating the youngster highly.

However, Liverpool's Dutch finisher has been so consistently prolific in recent years too, with 21 goals and 15 assists from the flank in his final full year in his homeland, before scoring seven Premier League goals across his first six months at Anfield.

The future is bright for the 24-year-old, but should Diangana be signed by Farke, there is every reason to believe that he could occupy that flank with the same pace, directness and trickery that led to Gakpo's long list of suitors last summer.

Aston Villa Plotting Deal To Sign "Underrated" Free Agent

Aston Villa are keen to strike a deal for former Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer, according to reliable reports.

Where is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain now?

Having made 146 senior appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side since joining from Arsenal back in 2017, the 29-year-old left the club at the end of last season upon the expiration of his contract meaning that he is now a free agent on the market and is looking to be snapped up to embark on the next stage of his career.

Back in June, England’s ex-international was first identified as a target by NSWE as a result of Unai Emery admiring his “versatility, dynamism and ability to create and score goals”, as per a report from Football Insider, and he’s not the first player to be recruited for the cost of nothing.

The Midlands outfit earlier in the window secured the services of Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans for free, followed by the big-money arrivals of Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby, and if the following update is to be believed, the top-flight veteran could be the fourth fresh face soon walking through the doors at Villa Park.

Are Aston Villa signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?

According to Sky Sports, Aston Villa and Brentford are both “interested” in signing Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign. Anfield’s former star also has “offers” on the table from unnamed clubs in the MLS, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, but it’s stated that his “preferred option” is to remain in England having “turned down lucrative proposals” from overseas.

Therefore, this is a huge deciding factor that chiefs could take advantage of if they were to table him an offer over the summer.

Liverpool's former midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has a track record of success at the highest level having secured 12 pieces of silverware throughout his career, including the Premier League and Champions League titles, so he knows what it takes to compete and be successful, and journalist Josh Bunting has already backed him to complete a move to Aston Villa. Taking to Twitter, he stated:

“Keep him fit and I really feel Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can excel at Aston Villa, free transfer so no real risk factor attached to it with his injury problems but stays fit and he adds depth into their midfield, very underrated in terms of being a ball carrier from deep.”

The Colossal Sports Management client, who has won 11 out of 13 games against Villa, also racked up 33 goal contributions (18 goals and 15 assists) in 146 senior outings for Liverpool so not only does he have an eye for positively impacting the offensive action in the final third himself, he also holds a desire to create chances for his fellow teammates around him.

Finally, Oxlade-Chamberlain would provide Emery with wonderful versatility having operated in a remarkable ten different positions since first bursting onto the professional scene, including everywhere across the midfield and the frontline, so should he put pen to paper in the weeks ahead, it could be a shrewd coup.

It was also McKay’s personal best in the short format of the game as the Rapids were restricted to 148 for 8.McKay said: “The funny thing about it is I’ve actually been feeling quite sick all day so I wasn’t particularly looking forward to playing tonight. But it was the same as usual, the same preparation, and I try and bowl the best ball everytime. Tonight I was very lucky and other days you bowl nicely and it doesn’t quite work out for you.”Colin Ackerman’s unbeaten 47 off 36 balls then enabled Leicestershire to overcome a mid-innings wobble as they reached their target with nine balls to spare.Leicestershire have now triumphed in their opening two games in a competition they have won three times whilst the Rapids have slumped to back-to-back defeats – both at New Road.Worcestershire opted to bat first on the same pitch as used for the previous T20 Blast game against Birmingham Bears but lost two wickets inside the opening two overs from McKay. Joe Clarke, who was again promoted to open, attempted a cut and was caught at first slip and then Brett D’Oliveira nicked through to keeper Luke Ronchi.Ben Cox, who hit a career best 124 in the County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham this week, again looked in good form and struck three fours and a six in Gavin Griffiths second over. Cox and Daryl Mitchell added 56 in seven overs and in the process the latter became Worcestershire’s highest ever run-scorer in T20 cricket, surpassing the 1,890 total of Moeen Ali.But on 31, Mitchell swept Cameron Delport into the hands of short fine leg and skipper Joe Leach failed to trouble the scorers before being yorked by Griffiths.Cox went to his half century off 35 balls with five fours and a six but lofted the next delivery from Callum Parkinson straight to long-on.McKay returned to the firing line and struck twice in two balls with Ross Whiteley holing out to long off and Mitchell Santner pouched on the midwicket boundary. The 34-year-old completed his haul in the final over as Ed Barnard also fell in the deep. When Leicestershire replied, New Zealand keeper Ronchi showed immediate aggressive intent as he struck the first three deliveries of the innings from Leach for boundaries. Australian allrounder John Hastings suffered the same treatment in his first over, this time from Delport.Black Caps spinner Santner broke the stand on 41 by bowling Delport and the first ball from Mitchell accounted for Ronchi in the same manner at 61 for 2 in the seventh over.D’Oliveira’s introduction into the attack bore instant reward with Foxes skipper Mark Cosgrove and Ned Eckersley falling at long-on and cover respectively. There was still work to do for the visitors when Lewis Hill was stumped to give Santner a second success and 40 were required from the final five overs. But Ackerman and Tom Wells (31 not out) ensured there were no more alarms for Leicestershire.

Crystal Palace: Eagles Make Offer For "Beast" Striker

Crystal Palace have made a verbal offer to sign Montpellier striker Elye Wahi and these next few days could be "decisive", according to reports.

Who will Crystal Palace sign?

It was a mixed 2022/2023 Premier League campaign for the Eagles, with relegation comfortably avoided but little progress made in terms of mixing it with England's elite.

Palace also sacked former manager Patrick Vieira with the Frenchman leading them into dangerous territory at the time, leaving them to turn to fan and club favourite Roy Hodgson.

After he guided them to safety, the Eagles saw fit to award Hodgson with the permanent job for next season, and a top half finish is now being targeted.

"I know what a fantastic squad we have here," Hodgson said a fortnight ago (via the BBC).

"It's a great blend of youth and potential, alongside experienced players with Premier League and international pedigree.

"I have spoken with the chairman [Steve Parish] at length and we agreed that we must be ambitious in getting the most out of such talent.

"As such, we have set ourselves the target of a top-half finish, which we believe is eminently achievable with such a fabulous group of players and the most magnificent supporters who get behind the team, week in, week out."

To strengthen further this summer will be imperative to that ambitious goal, with Jefferson Lerma already making the move to Selhurst Park on a free transfer.

Palace have been linked with a succession of more signings, including Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun, AC Milan's Charles De Ketelaere, Netherlands international Donny va de Beek and Torino defender Perr Schurrs recently (footballtransfers).

However, after the departure of star forward Wilfried Zaha, it's perhaps most important they add quality to their attacking ranks.

As such, the south Londoners have been linked with red-hot Ligue 1 striker Wahi, with reliable French newspaper L'Equipe (via Sport Witness) revealing as much.

According to the paper, Palace have made a verbal offer for the 20-year-old, with Hodgson's side having "invited themselves to the talks".

As well as them, it is believed La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have done the same, and these next few days could be "decisive" in determining Wahi's future.

The forward remains on holiday at this moment in time, but according to L'Equipe, he hopes to return and start training with his "new club" – whoever that may be.

How good is Elye Wahi?

Montpellier's star player bagged a brilliant 19 goals and five assists in the league alone last season, ranking as one of their best-performers per 90 in the process according to WhoScored.

Wahi was a consistent threat in the final third and that is exactly what Palace need if they're to achieve their goal of a top half finish next season.

The young attacker has also been praised by members of the media for his displays across the channel.

"If he manages to polish the definition, we are facing a striker who is going to exceed ten goals per season," said journalist Andrés Onrubia Ramos on Twitter.

"A real beast in space that, in addition, associatively also leaves interesting things. It should definitely explode."

West Brom To Target Two Markets For Arrivals This Summer

West Bromwich Albion will target free agents and the loan market this summer as Carlos Corberan looks to add to his squad, according to Express & Star reporter Lewis Cox.

What players have West Bromwich Albion been linked with this window?

According to Football League World, West Brom were keen to add free agent Nick Powell to their ranks this summer following his exit from Stoke City; however, the outlet claim that he will now complete a deal to move to EFL League Two side Stockport County.

The former Manchester United ace also had interest from Coventry City, Wrexham and Major League Soccer, though he now looks odds-on to sign for Dave Challinor's men ahead of 2023/24.

Former Portsmouth midfielder Jay Mingi, who is also now a free agent, was on the radar of West Brom in January, though it remains to be seen whether the Baggies can afford to move for him again this off-season.

As per The Telegraph, West Brom are in 'financial peril' and will need to sell most of their prize assets before being able to dip back into the transfer market to acquire players ahead of the new term.

Dara O'Shea has left the club to join Premier League outfit, Burnley, fetching a fee in the region of £7 million to put back into the coffers at the Hawthorns, as per BBC Sport.

Birmingham Live report that several other faces are set to join the cull in the coming weeks. Manager Corberan has revealed his hope that he can add to his squad before taking them to St George's Park next week for a visit, stating: "We are giving a little bit of time to see if we can add some of the new players and then spend time together there, at St. George’s Park.

"It’s not just the football perspective we will be working on, but the human perspective too. Some of the players are going to be new and they’ll need to fight together in the competition, so they’ll be creating a new family and new relationships."

What did Lewis Cox say about West Brom's potential transfer business?

According to journalist Cox, who spoke on the Express & Star YouTube channel, any additions that do come the way of West Brom this summer are more likely to arise from the free agent pool or loan market, according to journalist Cox.

Cox stated: "Finances will surely largely dictate that [scope for recruitment], loans are more likely to happen later in the summer, we know this. I don't think that we can get too hung up on it yet, but obviously, it would've been ideal to have them in. Now, it doesn't mean the window is going to end badly, it could be a positive late July/August with some really encouraging names and frees and the loans come in"

Ultimately, Corberan looks like he will have his hands tied this window and may be completely consigned to completing deals on the cheap or on a loan basis; nevertheless, he will be keen to find a few bargain gems to offer some depth to his side.

The Spaniard is also likely to rely on youth players to supplement his squad and has a positive reputation in developing younger players, which would offer some excitement for Baggies supporters despite their awkward position in the transfer market.
