Man City fans react to Ferran transfer news

Barcelona have agreed terms with Manchester City forward Ferran Torres and the Catalan giants are still pushing for a deal to be made following a failed bid, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Torres arrived in Manchester during the summer 2020 transfer window in a deal worth £25.2m. The 21-year-old has enjoyed a fine start to life in England; in 43 matches for the club, he has scored 16 goals and produced four assists. That is despite starting just 19 top-flight games in almost a year and a half at the Etihad Stadium.

However, the youngster is currently out injured with a fractured foot, having missed 16 games as a result, and it is still unclear as to when he will be able to return. Despite this setback, Barcelona are very interested in luring the Spain international to the Camp Nou in the January transfer window.

These Man City fans erupt at Romano’s claim

According to reports by Romano, Barcelona are pushing to make a deal with City for the winger and have made a €50m (£42.7m) bid, whilst the Premier League champions hold their price tag at €60m (£51.3m). Despite this, Torres has already agreed personal terms with the La Liga club.

In response to Romano’s tweet, a number of City fans flocked to the comments to usher the process along in the hope that a deal could be done to fund moves for reported targets such as Dusan Vlahovic and Erling Haaland.

Celtic predicted XI vs Hibs

Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side finally return to Premiership action later this evening, with Hibernian making the trip to Parkhead for the first fixture since the Scottish winter break.

The two sides met as recently as December 19, when the Bhoys saw off Hibs 2-1 at Hampden Park in the League Cup final – with Kyogo Furuhashi’s second-half brace ensuring that Postecoglou would pick up the first piece of silverware available during his short tenure as Celtic boss.

However, with the Hoops having already made four signings in the January transfer window, in addition to still being burdened by a number of injuries to important first-team players, the 56-year-old’s starting XI could look very different to the one that lined up in the Bhoys’ most recent league fixture against St. Johnstone.

So, how many changes will the Greek-Australian manager make to the side which started the 3-1 win over the Saints last time out? Here’s how we think Celtic could line up against Hibs, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Postecoglou looking to still be without the services of David Turnbull, Albian Ajeti, Giorgos Giakoumakis, James Forrest, Karamoko Dembele and Christopher Jullien due to injury, as well as suffering the recent blow of Kyogo Furuhashi’s unavailability, we predict that the 56-year-old will make a whopping six changes to his starting XI from the St. Johnstone victory.

The first of these comes between the Celtic sticks, with Vasilis Barkas dropping out of the side following the return of Joe Hart – who missed the Saints fixture due to fitness concerns.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/?post_type=web-story&p=664142″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news!”]

There are a further two changes in the Bhoys backline, with Greg Taylor taking the place of Liam Scales at left-back, while Josip Juranovic drops back into right-back, with Stephen Welsh making way for the Croatia international.

In the middle of the park, despite impressing against St. Johnstone, the £14k-per-week Nir Bitton – who was once dubbed a “walking joke” by Bhoys Analytics – makes way for the return of club captain Callum McGregor at the base of Postecoglou’s three-man midfield, while Reo Hatate is handed his Celtic debut alongside Tom Rogic in the two more advanced central midfield roles – with the £19k-per-week James McCarthy having to once again make do with a spot on the bench.

Finally, there appears to be an extremely exciting return to first-team action on the cards for the £4.95m-rated Jota, who comes straight back into the side following his potential recovery from a hamstring injury, while there is a further Celtic debut handed to Daizen Maeda – who replaces his stricken international teammate Kyogo in leading the line for the Hoops.

Man City fans want Ten Hag after Guardiola

Flocking to Twitter, lots of Manchester City fans are buzzing over reports that Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is one of the names in the frame to succeed Pep Guardiola when the latter’s contract expires.

City fans will be struggling to picture life without Guardiola following the most successful period in the club’s history. During his five-and-a-half year stay at the Etihad Stadium, the Catalan native has lifted 10 trophies, having won every domestic competition on offer in England.

Therefore, it is undeniable that Guardiola has created a legacy in City’s history, and he will duly go down as one of the greatest managers of the Premier League era, having won the division three times and currently on course for a fourth title.

However, the possibility of him leaving the club could soon become a reality, as the 51-year-old’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2023. With Guardiola’s contract now into its final 18 months, City have been drawing up a list of potential successors to replace him.

Man City fans want Ten Hag

Independent fan page City Xtra shared the news from Simon Mullock of The Mirror, which claimed that one of the names being spoken about as a potential successor to Guardiola is Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman was in charge of Bayern Munich’s reserve teams when the current City boss was in first team charge at the Allianz Arena, while in Amsterdam he has won five trophies and led his team to the brink of the Champions League final in 2019.

As a result, many City supporters shared their excitement at the news from Mullock, with many fans hailing Ten Hag as the perfect replacement for Guardiola.

Celtic: McAvennie wants Mikey Johnston out

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has told Mikey Johnston to seek a move to another club because he believes the winger doesn’t have ‘what it takes’ to succeed at Parkhead.

The lowdown

It’s not the first time McAvennie has questioned the 22-year-old. Back in October, he said that Johnston didn’t a long-term future at Celtic for the player he called a ‘part-timer’.

Having missed more than a month at the start of the season, the winger has only started three Premiership matches under Ange Postecoglou, although he has made eight appearances from the bench.

Johnston’s £7,900-per-week contract runs until the end of the 2024/25 season, and he is valued at £900,000 by Transfermarkt.

The latest

McAvennie has said that Johnston finds himself in limbo, being ‘too good for the bench’ but not at the level required to start for Celtic. The 62-year-old duly believes that the winger could be better suited, to the sides competing for European qualification rather than the Premiership title.

He told Football Insider: “I think if he went to Aberdeen or Hibs or Hearts, he would be a better player.

“I don’t think he has what it takes. He’s too good for the bench but not good enough for the first team.

“He’s a bit-part player and I don’t want a player like that at my club.”

The verdict

Is McAvennie’s assessment fair? Possibly – Johnston has often struggled to make an impact when given the chance.

The 22-year-old is yet to find the net this season despite taking 2.3 shots per game, with SofaScore listing finishing as one of his big weaknesses.

Worryingly for him, two of Celtic’s reported January targets – Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate – can play on the left wing. That may push him further down the pecking order under Postecoglou, so perhaps he should be asking his agent to seek out other opportunities if he can’t forge a consistent place in the Hoops’ first XI.

Injured Eranga doubtful for third Test

Sri Lanka’s preparation for the Sydney Test has been thrown into further turmoil after Shaminda Eranga sprained an ankle during training on the eve of the match

Andrew Fernando02-Jan-2013Sri Lanka’s preparation for the Sydney Test has been thrown into further turmoil after Shaminda Eranga sprained an ankle during training on the eve of the match. A call on Eranga’s fitness will be made before the toss on Thursday. Sri Lanka have also ruled out both Prasanna Jayawardene and Nuwan Kulasekara from the match, as both have failed to recover sufficiently from hairline fractures to a thumb and rib respectively.Eranga was warming up for Sri Lanka’s training session in a game of football when he sprained his right ankle, and despite having several minutes on the field to recover, could only limp back to the dressing room with the help of physiotherapist Steve Mount. Sri Lanka’s team management has said they are unsure whether he will recover in time for the match.”You don’t anticipate three or four guys going down in one Test match,” Jayawardene said on the eve of the match. “But it happened, so we just need to sit down and see what other options we’ve got. We’ve got two guys flown in, and we’re back to having a full 16 in the squad now. These are unexpected things we need to get our head around and handle the situation in the best possible way.”Eranga is Sri Lanka’s fifth player and their third fast bowler to be injured on tour. In addition to Nuwan Kulasekara’s rib injury that ruled him out of the second and third Tests, Chanaka Welegedara also had his series ended by a hamstring tear, which he sustained on the second day in Melbourne. Eranga’s injury means all three fast bowlers who played in the Hobart Test could be unavailable in Sydney. Suranga Lakmal had been flown in from Sri Lanka as cover for Welegedara, and may take the field less than 48 hours after landing in Australia.Dhammika Prasad is almost guaranteed a place, and Nuwan Pradeep may also play, even if Eranga is fit. Offspinner Suraj Randiv may also make it into the XI, particularly as the SCG surface has traditionally been the most spin-friendly track in Australia.Elsewhere in the team, Dinesh Chandimal is set to play as the wicketkeeper-batsman in Prasanna Jayawardene’s absence, and will bat in the middle order. Lahiru Thirimanne has also been flown in from Sri Lanka as cover for Kumar Sangakkara, who is out with a fractured index finger. He may step into Sangakkara’s top-order spot, but opener Tharanga Paranavitana, who has been with the team throughout the tour is also vying for a place.Jayawardene also confirmed that opener Dimuth Karunaratne will be granted an extended run in his position.

Everton could play Calvert-Lewin v Burnley

Loads of Everton fans were reacting to some early team news that has emerged ahead of their game away at Burnley in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

As per Patrick Boyland, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has said that he is now ‘hoping’ to return from injury against the Clarets at Turf Moor, in what The Athletic journalist claims would be a ‘boost’ for the Goodison Park faithful.

The striker has been out injured since August, and scored three goals in his first three games of the season (Transfermarkt). This, added to the 21 goals that he managed as the Merseyside club’s top scorer last term, shows just how important he is to the team, and so to have him back would be a big welcome.

However, with a longer term injury, some Toffees supporters are cautious that he is not rushed back, and are just hopeful that he is fit enough to play some part.

Series in sight for improving England

The scoreline says the series is all-square, but after such a convincing 112-run victory at Cape Town South Africa are now the side with the momentum

The Preview by Andrew Miller03-Dec-2009Match facts Friday, December 4, 2009
Start time 14.30 (12.30GMT)Preparing for the puddles: Stuart Broad warms up on Durban beach•Getty ImagesBig pictureSomewhat astonishingly, England stand on the verge of their first ODI series victory in South Africa, and their second in consecutive rubbers against Graeme Smith’s men following their 4-0 victory at home in 2008. After three fluctuating performances and a washout at the Wanderers, they have emerged with a 2-1 series lead – a scoreline that they have reached on merit thanks to two dominant performances at Centurion and Port Elizabeth. The fact that those games were punctuated by a record-breaking thumping at Newlands merely underlines the ongoing battle for consistency that is forever England’s weakness.Nevertheless, for the first time in a long time, England have displayed the makings of an impressive one-day outfit. Andrew Strauss’s personal form and tactical acumen make it hard to imagine a world in which he was exiled from the ODI set-up for two years, as was the case from the 2007 World Cup onwards. Eoin Morgan and Jonathan Trott have performed like instant veterans, while the veteran, Paul Collingwood, has rediscovered some of his finest form, with both bat and ball. The young guns, Luke Wright and Tim Bresnan, have started to move on from being merely promising, and all that remains is for Kevin Pietersen to rediscover his touch, and the renaissance will be complete. Or at least until their next Cape Town-esque relapse.South Africa, on the other hand, have got a few issues to resolve. Whereas England have had plenty practice at moulding a side in which Andrew Flintoff makes cameo appearances, the loss of Jacques Kallis has proven stupendously hard to overcome. At Newlands, the decision to trust five specialist batsmen paid handsome dividends when Smith won the toss and AB de Villiers blazed a 75-ball century; but at Port Elizabeth, the middle-order looked threadbare to say the least once James Anderson started to turn the screw. On the plus side, the addition of Morne Morkel has provided an extra layer of menace to South Africa’s attack, particularly when coming round the wicket to England’s left-handers, but the likely loss of Dale Steyn to a hamstring strain will undermine their bid for a share of the series. Nothing, however, could undermine it as much as the Durban weather, which has been abysmal all week. A washout would suffice for England – and provide a neat symmetry to the results column – but Strauss wants more than that. “We’re fully expecting to play tomorrow,” he said, “and if we do we will make sure we’re at the races and put South Africa under pressure again.”Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa – LWLWW
England – WLWLLTeam newsSouth Africa’s dilemma is whether to stick or twist … do they recall Herschelle Gibbs to the middle order in an admission that their batting is vulnerable, or do they trust Ryan McLaren to knuckle down at No. 7 and put his consecutive ducks to the back of his mind? Given that Steyn’s injury leaves them lacking in firepower, the likelihood is a reprieve for McLaren, whose medium-pacers have had their moments in the series, and a silent prayer that de Villiers comes as good as he did at Newlands.South Africa (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 AB de Villiers, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Alviro Petersen, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Johan Botha, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Charl LangeveldtNo such concerns for England, who have a settled first XI for arguably the first time since the 1992 World Cup final (when even then they had to decide between Allan Lamb and Robin Smith). James Anderson reported a knee injury in the build-up to the Port Elizabeth match, but figures of 5 for 23 in ten overs suggest he shook it off pretty effectively, meaning Graham Onions will once again be left carrying the drinks.England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Jonathan Trott, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Tim Bresnan, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 James Anderson.Watch out forKevin Pietersen needs a score to settle him down, because it’s not so much nerves as nervous energy that has been his problem so far in the tour. After a four-month lay-off, KP has been visibly rushing to pick up where he left off, never more so than at Port Elizabeth, when he could have been dismissed twice in a six-ball innings. More haste, less speed is the motto that springs to mind. If he allows himself a little longer to regain his timing, the entire squad could find themselves reaping the benefits as the Test series approaches. It ought not to be a coincidence, but such is the hold that Graeme Smith has over his team these days, that his rare failure at Port Elizabeth – lbw for 2 – was the cue for South Africa to crumble to an ignominious defeat. Conversely, when his agenda-setting strokeplay has come off – never more so than during his 44-ball 88 in the second Twenty20 at Centurion – there’s been no stopping the momentum he generates. If, as could happen amid the showers, the Durban game becomes a rain-reduced sprint, his 20-over prowess could well come to the fore again.Stats and trivia South Africa’s overall record in ODIs against England since 2008 now reads seven defeats and a solitary win in eight completed games, which is their worst clutch of results since the two teams first met in 1992 Ominously, the last ODI match that England played in Durban, in 2005, was a washout. The match was abandoned with England uncomfortably placed on 7 for 2, chasing 213. Quotes””We really want to come and win this series 3-1. When you start thinking about rain and things like that, it is going to affect your preparation.”
.”For us the priority is the Test series and we would never compromise Dale’s chances of being 100% fit for the first Test [at Centurion] by playing him on Friday.”
Mickey Arthur hasn’t abandoned the ODIs entirely, but it’s clear he’s already shifting his focus.

Malik and Naved cleared to play in Bangladesh

The Pakistan Cricket Board has granted permission for two of its banned players, Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, to play in a domestic Twenty20 league in Bangladesh

Cricinfo staff19-Mar-2010The Pakistan Cricket Board has granted permission for two of its banned players, Shoaib Malik and Naved-ul-Hasan, to play in a domestic Twenty20 league in Bangladesh. This comes just two days after the PCB allowed Mohammad Yousuf to play in the country.”The penalties on these players were for international cricket for the Pakistan team, but they are eligible to play in domestic competitions, so they are cleared to play in Bangladesh,” Wasim Bari, the PCB’s chief operating officer, told .The announcements have come shortly after the PCB banned and fined seven leading players on various charges during the disastrous tour of Australia which ended in February. Pakistan lost all three Tests, five ODIs and the lone Twenty20 match on tour.Former captains Younis Khan and Yousuf were banned indefinitely while Malik, also a former skipper, and allrounder Naved received one-year bans. Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal were fined between Rs 2-3 million [USD24,000-35,000] and put on six-month probations. The bans, however, do not extend to domestic cricket in Pakistan and competitions abroad although the PCB confirmed no player can participate in overseas competitions without prior approval.”Besides Malik and Naved, some other players also applied for permission and we have an open mind on that,” Bari said.Several members of Pakistan’s World Twenty20 squad, including Afridi, Razzaq and Mohammad Hafeez, were scheduled to play in Bangladesh later this month but Cricinfo understands that none of the 20-member contingent (15 plus five reserves) will be allowed to travel as the board wants them to participate in the training camp prior to leaving for the Caribbean late next month.

ECB agrees to T20s against Pakistan in Dubai

England will play two Twenty20 matches against Pakistan in Dubai next month ahead of their tour of Bangladesh, the ECB confirmed on Friday

Cricinfo staff08-Jan-2010England will play two Twenty20 matches against Pakistan in Dubai next month ahead of their tour of Bangladesh, the ECB confirmed on Friday. The matches will take place on February 19 and 20 and they leave for Dhaka the next day for a series against Bangladesh that includes three ODIs and two Tests. The England Lions side are also scheduled to tour the UAE next month with T20 matches against England, the UAE and Pakistan A on the itinerary, followed by three 50-over games against Pakistan A.Hugh Morris, ECB’s managing director of cricket, said the two Twenty20 internationals against the current world champions would be an “exciting challenge” for the England team and provide Twenty20 international experience before the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in the Caribbean in April.”The combination of three Twenty20 matches and three 50-over matches for the England Lions team, to be played at Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, will also provide those players with an excellent opportunity to push their case for selection for the England one-day side as we continue to build not only for the World Twenty20 in West Indies later this year but also for the ICC World Cup in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”Pakistan wind up their tour of Australia on February 5 while England will head to Dubai a month after their tour of South Africa concludes. The World Twenty20 will be held between April 30 and May 16.

Ferguson replaces injured Marsh in ODI squad

Callum Fergsuon will join Australia’s one-day international squad ahead of Friday’s second match in Sydney after Shaun Marsh was ruled out due to a back injury

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Nov-2010Callum Fergsuon will join Australia’s one-day international squad ahead of Friday’s second match in Sydney after Shaun Marsh was ruled out due to a back injury. Marsh made 31 in Australia’s one-wicket loss at the MCG on Wednesday, but he did not take the field at all during Sri Lanka’s innings and will miss the remaining two games in the series.”Shaun Marsh injured his lower back in the latter part of his batting innings yesterday against Sri Lanka,” the team physio Alex Kountouris said. “With the short turnaround between games in this series it was decided that the best management of this injury is to withdraw him from the remaining two games to allow him time to recover. His return to cricket will be based on his recovery over the next few days.”Marsh has had back troubles before, and a similar problem sidelined him for Australia’s one-day tour of New Zealand earlier this year. His latest niggle has opened the door for Ferguson, who was in the ODI squad in India last month but did not play a game, and is still waiting for his first appearance in Australian colours since seriously injuring his knee in the Champions Trophy final in October 2009.”Callum has been in extremely good form of late for South Australia in interstate cricket and has a very good one-day international record for Australia, averaging 46 with the bat, so we know he can perform well on a big stage,” the chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, said. Ferguson was due to link up with the squad in Sydney on Thursday, but his chances of playing on Friday are slim.Ricky Ponting will be back in the side having missed Wednesday’s game to attend his grandmother’s funeral, and Marsh would have been the likely man to make way for Ponting. The Australians haven’t got much time to turn around their form after losing a match they should have won comfortably at the MCG, and the coach Tim Nielsen said the players had a frank discussion after Sri Lanka’s triumph.”The most important thing is that we don’t run away from it, we identify the things we’re doing well and maybe not so well,” Nielsen said on the Melbourne radio station SEN. “We had a chat about that as a group last night, while it was very fresh and hitting pretty hard. Rather than just walk away and say ‘we got close’, we sat down and were pretty honest with each other about how we’re going and what we’re doing.”We just have to make sure that we don’t panic. There’s going to be a lot of speculation, there’s going to be a lot of theories and rumours and ideas on how we can get better. We just can’t afford to keep doing the same things like we did last night. We kept bowling bouncers that were chest high rather than head high, we bowled a few wides, we bowled a few slower balls that we didn’t land properly, and we didn’t really do anything out of the ordinary or different to what we’d been doing all night.”
